I'm so glad you mentioned the influence of ''The King of Comedy" on the first movie. I enjoyed ''Joker'' just fine, but was surprised how plagiaristic it was of Scorcese's film. It just annoyed me after a while, from the era it's set in; the tone; the style; the plot, even bringing in Robert de Niro for a significant role. I never felt like i was watching the origin story of an insane criminal mastermind, just an unhinged loner And the studio going around saying that "this is a different Joker" was one of the most succesful gaslighting campaigns in cinema history so that they could justify cashing in on IP and a name without delivering an original story that actually had anything to do with the actuall IP and character... and people bought it

Thank you for this review CineRanter. I remember how much I was looking forward to go to see Joker in 2019, and how disappointed I was. I might disagree with you about its value, as I feel that you found it worthy. I thought that on a purely cinematic level it didn't say anything new. But more importantly - I felt it was empty and even dangerously destructive on the level of the message it carried. It not only completely lacked moral center, it didn't have any kind of a moral counterbalance to the horrific thoughts and behaviours its main characters were acting out. For me Joker doesn't belong to the cinema as an art form. Its makers just used it to make an exercise in pure cynicism. For this reason I would not be interested in watching the sequel.
