Having read On Origin of Species, all I can say is "*yawn*". Quite dry, but given your background you should find it enlightening. My non-fiction these days seems to be slanted towards astrophysics. Of course, there is Hawking's, "A Brief History of Time". Tyson's "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry" is filled with his humour and is a good read. I'm currently reading "A Brief History of Black Holes". by Dr. Becky Smethurst. I'll end with a mention of Issacson's biography of Einstein, and Hawking's autobiography, "My Brief History".

The Forever War by Halderman - he wrote the idea in The Light Brigade before Hurley did. Later published with the second novel that linked it, Forever Peace, as a title called War and Peace (which has both books in one). I would say Forever War is better and I think he wrote Forever Peace because the fans were asking him to write a second.

Arrows of the Queen is a good (or continue) place to start Valdemar. It's one of my favorite series. I also particularly like the Collegium Chronicles five-book sequence. I would recommend publication order, generally. If you like filk music, I'd also recommend the various albums of the songs from series, though they seem to very difficult to find these days. A search on "Music of Valdemar" should find more information. BTW, there are also several other Tarma & Kethry books (Oathbound, Oathbreakers, & Oathblood) that are very much worth reading.

I've seen the movie, Annihilation, but haven't read the book. I found the movie interesting, but rather unfulfilling. I was not aware that it was based on a book, and since I firmly believe that the books are inherently better than the movies, a trip to the library is in order. Both "Foul Days" and "The Thirteenth Child" have piqued my interest. As always, thank you for the post and synopsis. I truly do look forward to this every Sunday morning.

Velocity Weapon is a pretty good read. For focused Military Sci-fi look at Rick Partlow's Books... Joshua Dalzell's Onega Force Series, Michael G. Thomas books...if you haven't read the Honor Harrington Series you kight like them. BV Larson is another great read. As you didn't mention L. Ron Hubbards Classic Battlefield Earth I'll assume you know not of it. The Dark Fleet Series and a number of Jack Campbells books are excellent. These are character driven stories within the Military Sci-fi genre good and exciting as far as I'm concerned.

Megan O'Keif's other series if also great. If you can find them Steve Perry's "Matador" series is wonderful. The Dorsai cycle (the first three at least) is solid as a rock! Hammer Slammers. The Nimrod hunt / Mindpool By Charles Sheffield is very interesting for the alien characters and the Nimrod. Enders Game nuf said. Embers of Ear Series by Gareth L Powell is I think a hidden gem. Adrian Tchaikovsky's The Final Architecture is great scifi in a mil-fic chassis the characters a vivid the story compelling and the world building top notch - highly recommended. If you enjoyed the Star Wars rogue squadron stuff there is a good chance you will like the better BattleTech novels too. Michael Stackpole's Warrior trilogy and the Grey Wolf Trilogy are both fun reads ( Heir to the Dragon is also good).
