I have a number of these in my yard every afternoon. Very loud for their size. They're quite bold, lingering within arm's reach while drinking nectar from the various flowers in the yard. No fear at all. Then again, we don't harass them.

Strange that so many people think this is a fake. Come to Bangkok and listen to this bird that is common in the parks; the audio is straight as I recorded it through the camera (without a microphone), the only editing is stitching the short clips together.

Nope, it is the genuine call of this common bird of parks in Bangkok, no sound editing at all. Birds such as these have a syrinx and not a larinx which allows them to make much more comlex sounds than mammals.

Just saw about 25-30 great egrets at the Smith and Bybee Lake nature preserve in Portland Oregon USA. We have a lot of blue herons here but I hadn't seen an egret before, so they must prefer the preserves for their peace and safety. Cool video!
@BirdingwithNick4 ай бұрын
I think you have hit upon a subject that is very under appreciated - the need for areas without disturbance. A lot of birds can make do with suboptimal habitat but if there is repeated disturbance they will fly away, using up energy and losing valuable feeding time. Preserves, even small ones, give birds that feeling of security where predators (humans, pets etc) do not disturb them. 25-30 is a good number for sure, but check this lot out - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKmkfX56odaGoc0

My most memorable sad memory happened in Berlin a. city where several species live. .No sea but lots of water and most of all food ,.Getting off the bus I saw a Herring gull on a car mat .It was dead having been hit by a car ..A gentleman ( no idea who he was ) and I buried it in some beautiful gardens .We both liked gulls & didn't want it be eaten by rats or crows .two species that have food a plenty . A far cry from sitting watching them in Kent where. the sea & their music sent me to sleep . Perfect bliss.
@BirdingwithNick4 ай бұрын
That's a lovely story. A funeral for a gull. Where in Kent did you watch gulls? I am from Dartford in Kent and when I am back there I always visit locations for gulls - notably Mediterranean Gull.
