@marygallagher3428 Power is mostly needed at night, now imagine having multiple tool batteries, it's a emergency, and all you need is one system for using power directly from solar to charge batteries, and then use the same unit to use at night to power low wattage appliances like a fan, TV or breathing assistance machine, It's better than a small portable power station, it's the ultimate last ditch power system.

lettuce is growing better in clumps because there is less root damage when moving them.... Planting Tomatoes or tomatillos, plant deeper than you think. plant until the whole bottom layer of leaves is under ground.....they will become roots and the stalks will get very strong. deep is better, you could even plant 4 or more levels of leaves deep if you want. I bet your indeterminant tomatoes will grow 10 feet long because you have such good support systems. I have seen people, that hate lettuce, eat fresh lettuce and love it. My batteries have a window of about a day and a half, but I don't have a normal system, I run 12v DC and 120v AC, the Pasteles machine has to be ran on grid, it needs a soft start to run on my system, the only reason I need a day and a half on batteries is because I also have wind, I generate power at night if it's windy.

@@MosaicHomestead One thing that might help the tomato plant at your place could be "rooting stations" along the vine you'll trellis up. Tomato will set down new roots if the vine touches soil. If you have some spots where the vine can hit soil along the trellis (hanging planter???) it could give the vine a fresh boost to keep growing. So far in my greenhouse, what seems to be able to over winter so far are citrus and avocado trees (in terms of edible stuff). I'm checking out how ginger does this year. I honestly believe you have a better handle on solar than any of the preppers in my friend group. Are you looking into Star Link? We've given it a look, I was surprised to see that is is country dependent. Meaning I'd need to buy a US version and a Mexico version(the whole set up). I'm also not far from Canada so if I ever went there, I may need even another. I think there is some border town overlap and some limited capability between countries....but for the best it's country dependent. I look forward to more of the solar content Luis.
@MosaicHomestead
@MosaicHomestead 19 күн бұрын
@OldSchoolPrepper I'm looking into the RV starlink that is portable, not sure if it's country dependent, I'm only putting up solar content of applications that are not the norm, applications preppers are not talking about but would work for long term and would be small enough to realistically protect from EMP, this unit can be connected to a tool battery in a emergency, the variable voltage from 18v all the way up to 58v makes this unit a realistic prepper last ditch option it will accept any DC power source from solar to battery within the variable voltage ⚡️

@MosaicHomestead I know you have mentioned it before; what are your panels rated at? My guess is 200 watts. I see you chose a 400 watt transformer. That is a good fit for that application. Because I use HAM radios, I buy sine wave everything and that gets expensive. I am glad you are not pushing that for this application
@MosaicHomestead
@MosaicHomestead 20 күн бұрын
@NormalPrepping the panel recommended is a 380w solar panel, this unit will also work with a 400w solar panel, this unit will work perfectly to power a HAM radio, you can run a HAM with 12v depending on what you have or with 110 AC...What problem do you see.
@MosaicHomestead
@MosaicHomestead 20 күн бұрын
@NormalPrepping You are aware this would run a starlink?...that has more advanced and more sensitive electronics, that's why 2.0 has a pure sine inverter, buck transformer 12v is normal 12v DC, solar panel is DC, buck transformer is just reducing 44.5v to 12v...I'm kinda good at this lol, I'll power your HAM and use it without a license during a apocalypse lol, in a real SHTF rules will be broken, I bend rules right now putting this type of information up, what I put up works, so if I say it will power a HAM...It will power a HAM.

@LibertyGarden I haven't seen the star link power specs, but I'm definitely sure I could run it with this 2.0 version, what makes this a way better system is the variable voltage from 18v to 58v step down to 12v, this makes this unit compatible with anything producing 18 to 58v, this includes, solar panels, batteries or anything else producing this variable voltage ⚡️

@MosaicHomestead I presume the only issue with this sort of approach would be the power spitting out of the inverter occasionally cutting out if sun goes away temporarily and some devices might not like being cut off. What are your thoughts on that? Also, I've never run an inverter from anything but the voltage range of batteries (which usually isn't that broad). The voltage range out of panels (especially when many are wired together) can be a bit wider. Did you have any thoughts on that going into your inverter? Clever idea to have the chickens eat the worms and insects in the compost! Have you considered that you might be able to build a solar oven to use to "sterilize" the soil to kill the insects, etc., in it to make it more like a seed starting/potting soil mix?

Where I live we have more issues with snails and slugs, i found out it was snails/slugs because I snuck out at night and checked out my garden just like Luis is doing this day. Luis is doing the investigative work NOW so he thrives later. I think having the birds go thru it is a very interesting idea and I'm going to keep that info handy for the future, it's so good for the birds. I can live more in balance with the worms/bugs because I have a lot more decomposing material and more space than Luis does in this particular bed. @OldSchoolPrepper that's exactly it, it's old compost, decaying matter is running out, so Earthworms go into overdrive procreating, this is how a worm 🪱 bin works, when worm population is down, you stop feeding until the numbers come up, I didn't have a raised bed, I had a worm bin with a growing population looking for food. The raised bed so far has no problems, the lettuce and tomato plants are still there, I snuck in the few seeds that sprouted in the viability test of the carrot, I want to see what does well in this area.

@@OldSchoolPrepper I learned a lot with this problem, I want to try to come up with solutions on how to grow clean food for at least a year after a nuclear exchange, Huples old nuclear war video touched how hard it would be to grow clean food after a exchange, that video opened up my curiosity, I'm even going to watch that Homestead disaster movie just to see if there are any crazy ideas 💡, I'm going to be building these raised beds with wheels on the rooftop garden to move beds to a secure room during a hurricane, this might protect beds from other disasters like nuclear war, I believe I can store half a ton of compost in my compost bin, and store chemical fertilizer for a years worth to try to get away with something, I would have to try to save some chickens, I might touch this subject next year.

Just got a idea for your lettuce problem, salt kills slugs, have you tried Epsom salt ?, it's salt that adds magnesium to your soil, you can't use a lot, but it might work...I'm going to see if this kills slugs as a experiment 😂

@FocoTheFirst when I was putting compost inside the raised bed the first time, I said, wow, look at all those worms 🪱 lol, I thought worms did nothing to seeds and seedlings, gardeners praise worms in soil like it's the best...my research said otherwise when starting a vegetable garden, it's the first time using my own compost for vegetables, I usually grew small amounts in pots or buckets, but it was only with potting soil, I want to learn how to grow vegetables with my own compost, this was a great learning experience, so far all seedlings are OK and thriving, I will be putting up updates on the progress of the seedlings.

@@marygallagher3428 Thanks, when I was going to start, I wasn't happy with the original one door design, I already had the material to make the double doors, so I just went for the double doors, I was happy I put in the extra work.

@OldSchoolPrepper I'm here fighting with old seeds lol, I've had to do some viability test, not great results because I bought seeds at the end of the year, but I got some lettuce up already and a cherry tomato plant out of 20 seeds 😆, but all I need is about 2 more to germinate, so I believe I'll be ok.

That's a beefy setup there for fences. You could grow triffids in there!

@PraxisPrepper first I'm going to make sure the lettuce and tomatoes can't get out, if it works, then I'll grow the triffids.
