If you dont have those target films easy way to check that your lens is level with the film holder is to place a mirror on it and then focus on the reflection of the lens.

sensor being on a parallel plane with the film is crucial to successful scanning, however you manage to accomplish that! the target film works great and easily ensures correct alignment, which makes it worth the (small) investment IMO (compared to all the other equipment)

Interesting as usual - Your videos are among the most watchable in the camera space because they're not so specs driven. Astro Horis: Focal length and aperture are covered also by both the Fuji 32-64mm and teh 35-70mm "kit lens" - so would you see a benefit in such lenses here? Does the look or the "rendering" of the images have some qualities that the Fuji lenses do not have?
@paulschefz

Thank you! good question. I had the 32-64 really liked it for the little extra width (32) but the 64 was always a little tight, great lens (as they all are) but also big and heavy. 35-70 is just such a great lens, small, light, and clean and sharp, not much "character" (which really none of the fuji lenses have much of, they are just great glissando perform well) 45-105 same, great lens, but a little too tight at the wide end and big and heavy. the astrhori 40 is just a fun lens. light, small, great performance and a little bit of character without ever actually loosing optical clarity, nice flares, but of course you need the time and patience for manual focus. so for me the 35-70 is the go to all around insanely great lens that does it all, the 40 is a fun lens if I feel more artistic and want to compose better and slow down a bit. 35-70 is iPhone shooting, 40 is 8x10 shooting. hope that helps! afaik fuji is coming out with a 32-90 cine-zoom which will cover the range I want in a zoom but it will be powered, probably huge heavy and not cheap.

yes, dust is always an issue. running a large room air purifier makes a difference, there are really great battery powered air blowers (not canned!) available now, other then that: minimize surfaces (not too many holders, carriers, glass plates,...) and keep negatives clean to start with. I think this way of film scanning is a easier then flatbed or slide scanner, too many surfaces and internal dust.

@paulschefz
@paulschefz 9 күн бұрын
@@SkumleRafte as Rainer mentions in the video, he just uses a piece of glass from his epson scanner and a mask. IMO fewer surfaces are better, less glass is better but of course it all depends on the size of the negative and /or how flat it is. I had long discussions about this issue with Rainer before he received his stand and light source, and we agreed that until he has it in place and he could run some tests, it is hard to make a final call. what he has right now works for him. I used to make my own negative carriers for darkroom printing out of matte board (it was impossible to find 6x8 and 6x9 full frame carriers) and that worked. in short: I think as long as the negative is flat and held in place you should be fine. the lens does not cover 33x44 (fuji GFX) at 2:1 closest distance. going towards 1:1 the vignette disappears. the lens vignettes again at infinity when closed all the way down (not sure why anyone would use this lens that way). IMO it is still the best macro solution for GFX right now, even if it does not cover completely at closest distance. 2:1 is not always needed and it is perfectly useable (even when stopped down) with a crop. the lens focus field seems to be flat and pretty steady into the corners 1:1 really should not be a problem at all. considering that the fuji gf 120 only does 1:2, the field is extremely curved and the lens is useless with extension rings, this TTArtisan is a dream, especially for the price.

In addition, the aperture is not changed despite the GF lens is set the aperture ring to "C" and/or "A". The front wheel does not work no matter I select "M", "A" or any other shooting modes. Only the aperture is changed by the back wheel on "P" mode. @paulschefz
@paulschefz 4 ай бұрын
in my experience the TT 90 gets just about the entire head plus maybe an inch on top and bottom (below chin) the 11mm makes the face format filling, working distance is ok, far enough for people not to feel like you will hit them in the nose and for the lens not to create problem with lights (shadows,...) about 50cm. its still close of course and depth of field is very shallow. I am surprised how well the lens performs stopped down, diffraction definitely starts to creep in but it's not bad. I guess all these lenses act differently with different tubes, I just find the gf glass more or less useless with any and all tubes (the shorter the tube, the more likely you might get a useable result but still) the obvious disappointment to me is the GF 120 macro which is a great portrait lens IMO (for those close up portraits you are looking for) but difficult of actual macro application: strong field curvature and completely useless with all (including fuji!) tubes.

I also have the 50s ii two and if you just shoot stills and landscapes check that camera out people it's slow focusing not suitable for portraits but man pumps out some great images GFX has now joined the party, with full frame cameras and honestly they are better value in my opinion because of the image quality. the 100SII was not available when I got my 100II, I did not have the choice, it definitely is a great choice to have! I love the tilt finder, I agree with it being a pain when packing and storing the camera! I havent shot any video with the 100II yet. I have not needed that ultimate video quality, I also always use smaller cameras. with the latest canon/nikon/sony announcements it almost seems as if they are just handing Fuji that high end landscape/IQ with the GFX. I just saw that fuji released the SDK for GFX use on drones, this is big because phase still had that high end commercial/industrial covered. easy now to think of GFX for that use as well. great system getting better all the time!

Thanks for the review! I've been getting into more macro photography lately and that's led to trying out more flash solutions. This looks like a lot of fun with unique results.

I actually used the lux master with silver reflector in the new macro video. tried the soft box first but wanted more specular light, worked really well! I am so used to working with my big 1200ws packs and heads but this was a lot easier. might get another lux master.

It's a very soft lense, there is a lot of ghosting at PO, and I found the bokeh a little bit nervous
@paulschefz
@paulschefz 4 ай бұрын
definitely not a perfect lens, definitely lots of ghosting wide open but I am still happy with the sharpness and the bokeh might not be completely smooth but has character, which is really what these lenses are about anyway?

yes! getting to use those super fast shutter speeds is definitely a factor for producing sharp images! I have had to dial my iso down a bit here in sunny CA!

Hello Paul. Do you often use flash? Your results are quite predictable. I noticed that I completely stopped using additional lighting. I have two inexpensive Fuji 42 TTL flashes. I feel so sorry for them, now they are just gathering dust. Previously, I made such a reflector from a children's souvenir umbrella for $2, and lined the inside with white thick fabric. The flash was directed at the umbrella, the reflected umbrella onto the object. The shadows were minimal. (Google Transletter) Eduard.

I'd call it a dome but that's just me. Thanks for the review. I dismissed the flash when I saw it first appear but the dome looks like it might be useful for lighting individuals in pub music sessions (in our dimly-lit Irish pubs).
@paulschefz
@paulschefz 4 ай бұрын
dome it is! the flash is great, I guess there are cheaper solutions that do the same (but simply dont look half as cool) and yes I think the dome will probably see the most use for me. the silver reflector adds oomph and the soft box will come in handy if I dont have the big packs around (although I doubt it will put out enough light in those situations ?) again, the best thing is to have the tools available and not taking up a lot of room.

@@paulschefz Yep, I've been avoiding speedlight type flashes as even with bounce cards I don't like them. My portable studio flashes are way to big to be discreet with their attachments. This one might do the trick! Worth a spin anyway :)

@@trollfiddler same here, I use flash a lot but have always avoided small portable (handheld) units. not that this one is that different or does anything magical but the size, power, overall package and system seems to work well for me. I am using it more and more.

How does it compare to the Mitakon 80mm 1.6?
@paulschefz
@paulschefz 4 ай бұрын
I can't tell since I don't have that lens. what is interesting to me and why I compared it to the AstrHori 75 f4 is that both lenses show similar issues/drawbacks/flaws wide open, which is obviously at different f stops (f1.25 vs f2.5, the "secret" wide open for the 75mm) Maybe the mikaton behaves in a similar way? Lots of character (flaws) wide open, solid once stopped down?
