I know quite a bit on the technique of the International Latin rumba walks. You probably know Walter Laird. He put the "T" in rumba walk technique, and I think I got this. Especially in the forward rumba walks. 1. If I want to do a forward walk starting on the back foot, my LF and leg, I start out with my RF and leg free, in front of the L leg and LF. 2. Walter Laird said that the walk is taken on a straight leg from the time the unweighted leg and foot "strides forward", and stays straight as it is now weight-transferred to full weight (the L foot and leg). The L leg and LF stays straight as the RF and leg "flexes". (That's the free foot and leg) 3. Not until the RF now becomes straight as it goes forward in front of LF--not until then--that the LF and L leg now "bends" from being straight as this RF and R leg does its forward walk. 4. Also, when the forward walks happen, there is a necessary leg and foot line. There needs to be no observable separation between the legs when doing the forward walk. If there is separation, then you are not doing the International rumba walk correctly. Exceptions here---like if you are doing championship level dancesport, you do the rumba walks forward with no leg separation, and then you suddenly explode your legs into a quarter split stretch---to prepare for the cucaracha or something---that's all right. But be sure the legs do not separate when doing the walks themselves.

This "Mooch" move was known as one of the 10 "Popular Variations in Latin-American Dancing" from Alex Moore. I realize that if you want to do the flicks in the Mooch in the "Jumping Jive" style, there is something more to add if you want to do this even more "open style." On the Chasses LRL or RLR that end the Mooch, you can even do a "hop" on the free foot that starts each chasse! Not just on the forward and back rock steps.......

You glossed over the most important part: vacationing european dance teachers copied down some steps from Son Cubano after the "only dance teacher on the island" (doubtful) didn't even want to teach them and told them to just "go to the nightclubs". They got the name of the dance wrong, had transcription errors in their steps and made up their own names for them, and taught the dance in europe and made themselves the authority on how the dance should be danced, instead of the original culture being the authority. Now people dance "rumba" with straight knees and turned out toes. And the same happened to all of the dances.

if you listen to the music at all, why would you cha-cha-cha with your feet (or some other part of your body) to a rhythm that was not in the music? Cuban Cha-cha invariably sounds 1 2 3 cha-cha-cha. BUT in a lot of american pop cha-cha music you hear 12 cha-cha-cha. Can you adapt? NO? Tough nuggies.
