You can save a little more money when starting seeds by planting seeds, in soil, in the inner cardboard core from loo rolls. The cardboard will break down over time, when you have them planted in the ground or pots.

Hi from Western Australia. I just found your channel and have been binge watching your videos. I love seeing young people trying to raise their family in a healthy way, and living a Faith filled life. I am nearly 60 now and I would’ve loved to have done what you are doing. I know it’s never to late to learn new things and I am trying to make changes in my life and improve my health. I’ll make sure I send you a pic of me throwing out some junk for your ‘inspirational fruit tree’ 😊. Also, if you can get hold of either of these old magazines, one is called ‘Grassroots’ and the other one is called ‘Earth Garden’ I’m sure they will come in handy and I know you’ll love them. I don’t think they are still in print anymore, but I have seen heaps of them on marketplace etc. I look forward to following along on your journey. It’s encouraging to hear how others are sharing the Faith with their families. Love and prayers to your lovely little family❤

Nice job mate. Love the disclaimer. I've been growing for decades and I'm so glad you didn't buy bagged "potting mix" It's mostly wood based and not really good. That mix looks pretty good and should work well. Here's a tip though, ALWAYS wear a mask when you use perlite or vermiculite that dust destroys lungs. Next time you need seed-raising mix, just sieve the potting mix blend or some coir and perlite and add a few of your castings. It works a treat. If you really are a beginner you might have gone too big too soon but I guess we'll all find out. Good luck!

Personally I think the 2nd plan is better, as you said if you think of extending down the track. My only concern is storage and lack of. Especially when you are going to be doing food preservation. I’m just speaking from experience, you might regret that a bit later. In regards to gas I don’t agree with some of the previous comments. Natural gas might be something that might disappear but I believe there will always be a need for bottled gas. We live in the country and we have a gas cooktop. As a person that cooks and preserves a lot I would not have anything else. BBQs also need gas. We have large bottled gas as our cook top is the only thing that we have on gas. We only get it filled once every 14 to 16 months. It costs us about $100. So much cheaper than electricity. Have you also thought for now about putting a laundry in a cupboard with bifold doors. It works quite well. May I also suggest to put cavity sliding doors into your wet areas, this will also save space. You are doing well guys.

I think a quarter of an acre is a great size block in the context of developments within Australia in 2024.. it should be an ample size block for what you want to achieve.. I was fortunate enough to buy our dream block recently that is one whole acre.. I think the bare minimum I would have settled for is 1000 sqm.

Without verandah's around them, these tiny homes would cook in the summer, they will also be cold in the winter without double glazing in the windows. That translates into more energy spent on heating and cooling and a bigger off-grid power system. I'm not a fan of tiny homes or container homes, they have poor thermal performance and cost too much. If it's legal to build some form of Earthship, I would go with that.... They use passive heating and cooling, reducing the need for wood fires and solar/battery systems. :) Earth-tube cooling and passive greenhouse heating have no rivals for efficiency.

Those big pots would make nice wicking buckets! :) Wicking buckets and beds are good for saving water, boosting yields and consistent watering (useful for plants like watermelon). Making bulk calories for the family can be tricky, potatoes, rice and wheat provide staples for many around the world. You can grow potatoes in bags and sweet potatoes make a great edible lawn. You can also buy rice in bulk and store it in containers, if you put the containers in the freezer a few days it will sterilize and afterwards store for months. So far this spring I've planted chives, parsley, sage, basil, garlic, celery, cape gooseberry, watermelon, snow pea, passionfruit and grapes... Plus, nasturtiums, chamomile lawn, lavender and weavers/old hamii bamboos. If you want to screen off a neighbour or make your own building materials, bamboo is the go....

My Nona and Nona had a small block in Suburbia and they did so much with it... olive tree, big veggie garden, barbecue area, chook house, wine making in the cellar, smoke room for prosciutto and other meats, sausage making... plus a swimming pool. You can make it what you want!

I went to the expo in Adelaide and it was packed so there is clearly al ot of interest until they look into the legalities which is why 2 weeks later I started seeing them for sale on market place. Its also why I decided against one 5 years ago and built an apartment on a truck that I can park on the street legally if I need to so it doesnt need land tied to all the suffocating regulations and therefore expense of a regular house. Ive seen ppl pay so much money for essentially a box on wheels and loose big on it when they realise the mistake they made.

You talk about cutting down native trees not on your property, even on your property you need permits, off your land it’s illegal and can come with criminal charges and fines etc please see the council or parks about dangerous trees Plant fruit trees on the side with neighbours, plant under crops like strawberries as a living mulch under them, companion. Plant gets more from your space

Best of luck mate. Don’t worry about the money for the pots they will keep for many years and are a good size I have an even smaller yard and I’ve been growing for a few years. Just would say start a compost and making your own soil add anything you can get for free (wrap chick wire around 3 garden steaks and fill her up - grass cuttings, food scraps, leaves old potting soils.) I also bought sugar cane waste from Bunnings for a top layer mulch super cheap and did help my garden when I put it on after the plants were established. P.s. I also have a lemon tree I waste heaps of lemons ask your wife to share her lemon juice jarring technique And if she uses for anything in particular.

We are currently building a house ourselves and we are camping on our property with our three kiddos while we do it to save money. Is that an option for you guys? We are hoping to get some fruit trees planted and some garden beds in next summer. We are in Maine so we are headed for winter here. You can check out our camping situation on our KZbin channel 😉

Thank you for subscribing! I haven’t done a lot of long videos because we have been working so much on the house, but will be adding some soon I hope! It has been a hard and amazing journey and one that we are all very proud of. There is nothing like being able to say, “We built this together.” Truly a blessing, not going to lie though, we are exhausted right now and can’t wait to have a little break in the building process. ❤
