bake your egg shells & then crush lightly & feed back to your chickens for calcium; I cook my shells in a fire pit & take the ashes down to the chook run, they scratch through it getting minerals from the ash & coal as well also chickens will appreciate a bigger area to forage (eventually, you can make a larger run on your property) you are doing well so far, I've had chooks for nearly 30yrs, wouldn't be without them, they have the best eggs thanx for sharing your journey

Hey guys, love the channel. It is so refreshing to see people building and working towards their dreams not just posting the perfect "after" shots. Love that you guys are real and using those free/cheap resources - who cares if they are not "perfect" or "pretty". My family is also in the process of building our homestead, we are in a granny flat with our baby until we build and sometimes all our budget allows is free resources and they may be ugly, but if they work we are happy.

With the eggs when you have a lot you can freeze them for cooking and scrambled eggs. The hens often have a rest from laying during the winter. You can also give them oats to eat which is economical.The other option is to sell the eggs😊 and the money used for the food you buy in for them. My best veg to grow is silver beet and chard.Chop an onion and cook them put them in anything cut fine, soups patties spaghetti sauce, when nothing else growing that will.

You can plant the wheat berries as well to grow your own wheat. Very easy starter crop like easier than corn. Oats can also be planted for the oat grass and seeds. Oat grass is amazing herbal medicine eaten fresh. Super great winter crop to grow and the grass is great as a winter green. Growing grains is so easy and productive. Scares people for some reason but it’s easy in a raised bed or in the ground or in a bucket. Been growing and producing our own food for over 10 years now. Love it. I planted things we didn’t eat like meddlers and chaste tree berry, and quince. We love them all now. Chaste berry is like pepper but with a hormone balancing effect and is medicine for the pituitary gland. Comfrey is also a fantastic herb that’s hard to buy. Can be turned into compost quickly and is packed with minerals, use it externally for non open wound healing or do research on internal use as it’s illegal here in Australia, but I still use it when needed. Southernwood is another herb to consider. It’s been banned now but was a cure for extreme viral infections and Ross river fever. It will grow happily in a pot as will comfrey. So many good herbs and foods out there to grow. Millet is another grain that can be boiled up and made into porridge or used like rice. God bless you both for doing this and going back to the natural way we were created to live. You’ll never stop learning. 😊

I can’t have chickens where we are renting but would love to have them. I’ve joined a fb Melb backyard chicken group to learn from. BIGGEST resounding lesson to learn is fox proof your henhouse/enclosure. Please do this Tom they are very cunning and they are everywhere. Things I’ve started though: compost, worm farm, vege garden, making kombucha and milk kefir. All in infancy stage but like you said, I’ve started. Thanks for this video it’s inspiring to get started too.

loving the vids ! 😄 here's a little tip for feeding the chooks on the cheap. Put your veggie scraps , potato , carrot , cauliflower etc into a pot and boil it for a couple of minutes then stir in a handful of wheat pollard (or rolled oats ). Once cooled feed that veggie porridge to the ladies. Its cheap and wholesome. They also thrive on meat scraps. If you want to get fancy you can sprout wheat for them too. In winter you can set a light on a timer to come on in the morning. This tricks then into thinking the days are longer and they will lay better through the winter.
@lilvalentine5453 ай бұрын
oh and if you're not already doing this, save your egg shells , crush them up and give them back to the hens so they get plenty of calcium to put into new eggs 😊

I agree with all of your ideas. I would also add getting solar power if possible. We also had a slow combustion stove that we used in the winter because it heated the house and cooked beautiful food. We were completely off grid so we had to install a septic system that watered the paddocks with recycled water. Just take things one step at a time and you won’t be overwhelmed. 😊😊

We would love to go full solar/ Off grid but that will be in the future! I might set up a little battery/solar system though just for fridges and freezers ! Great video guys. My husband and I live in Adelaide, pretty close to the airport with our two small children (1 & 2 years old). We are renting, but one day we would like to live in our own place and homestead and live off grid/independently as much as possible. So far we have done the following; - make 90% of our food from scratch (nothing from packets, other than diced tomatoes and pasata sauce) this means that I had to learn a whole lot of kitchen skills in order to be able to do it myself. I buy a few sauces here and there, but that’s really it. - Sourdough bread (I now sell my starter to others on marketplace) - Make our own cleaning spray from citrus peels we use - Make our own vinegar (learning/implementing this one right now) - Bought half a cow from a farmer we met on Facebook - Been dabbling in growing our own food, in raised garden beds and pots. - Fermenting kefir (super easy just buy the grains on marketplace) Things I’m in the process of learning; - making our own bone broth - making yoghurt from scratch - pickling - fermenting vegetables - make our own body care products - make our own laundry detergent We would love to get chickens, but we can’t do that in our property. But we buy all our eggs direct from a farm every 5 weeks.

This is a perfect example of what we all need to do! Well done, im sure it has taken a lot of time to learn all the new skills but im certain you dont regret anything you have done! Keep it up and thanks for the comment, we love hearing from people on the same journey

My goal for this week month is going back to making our own pasta from scratch. We were doing it, but stopped when our pasta machine broke. Took us a while to get another. We already make our own bread. Our sourdough starter died, so planning on getting another. I’m currently on a detoxification trying to repair my gut health. So on day 2 of just drinking bone broth which I made myself. One more day then it’s adding soup. Tomorrow I’m making another 2 batches of kraut, I’m quite frustrated my last batch went bad. But I’m trying really hard to slowly make everything from scratch, and I’ll be going paleo for my own health. If that makes sense.

“This is not a snack”… Exactly!!! American movies are the worst for this, they even call lollies and chips snacks! I have an awesome muesli bar recipe I’ve been making lately which is an awesome snack. Fruit and cut up veggies with a homemade dip are our favourite snacks. But we honestly don’t snack much at all. When you’re making eggs on sourdough toast for breakfast and making wholesome healthy meals for breakfast lunch and dinner, you tend to be fuller for longer carrying you to the next meal without needing a snack.

We try and make our own food from scratch as much as possible. The most shocking thing I found in the supermarket after we had our little one was food marketed at kids. It usually has about 100 ingredients including canola oil and sugar! The only suitable yoghurt pouch we found in the supermarket is the tamar valley kids yoghurt, which we use when we are out and about. A particular bad case is those 'veggie puffs' which contain about 1% of whatever vegetables they claim the food to be - in powder form! Rubbish!
