If you have the parking break on, you dont have to worry about starting in gear i would assume! Plus, if you dont already have an uncontrollable habit of putting the car in neutral before doing anything, you aren't an experienced driver yet

It was an exceptionally goodcar for single owner , good engine enough space and power with good mileage . We need cars like beetle again , SUV looks just hunk of metal going down the road with just no design .

Your head gasket is blown. Leaking slowly into cylinders. Especially after sitting all night.

Check your valve clearance or hydraulic lifters.

Check your o2 sensor live data, see if it seems correct or not.

Fuel filter clogged or fuel pump with low pressure

It must be the pcv valve.

Should have grabbed new rims at the junk yard. Would have made it look a lot better.

Nice! I have the exact same car. Same year same color…except mine is a 1.8L gas turbo. Bought it in 2000 as a low miles dealer demo. After somehow surviving all these years(including being the first car for my two daughters) it’s now my non-ending hobby project. It’s def more of a labor of love than a practical endeavor, as I prob should have abandoned that silly money pit years ago. But I refuse. Besides, I’ve spent way too much in replacement parts to turn back now. I’m currently looking to start addressing the dilapidated interior. The interior plastics used on these are among the worst quality I’ve ever seen. Just awful. Tip: Full sets of the hubcap badges are available super cheap on eBay…or at least used to be.

You should have grabbed those door panel, you could sell them for $$ to offset repairs. The car looks better with just the steel wheels. Those aftermarket hubcaps look so generic, especially given they don’t have the vw logo.

Awesome video, really nice to see someone using a 1.9 TDI in the US. Those engine really last for decades, just make sure to use good quality oil, take it (if you can) on a longer trip each week (at least 10 km of highway) to avoid carbon build up and it will run and run and run. I have 3 friends with that engine (Audi A3 and 2 with a Seat Leon) and all of them already have more than 300.000km done without any issues, only one of them has exactly the same door latch issue xD.
