Your suspension is called torsion bar. Torsion = twisting.If I remember, the rear is a metal rod and the front is leaves( metal strips). Like a leaf spring mounted sideways inside the front beam.Unless it's a superbug, they used struts with coil springs. Google this, videos are very helpful as you know! Great vid and great work, keep it up and above all have fun. You've picked the perfect vehicle to learn on!

You’re making good progress. Slow is good, don’t rush things. Ask questions as you go along. Many of us are willing to help you learn as we all started in one way or another the same as you.

@@BeloshapkaAutoBuilds I appreciate that but there’s plenty of other great channels out there to learn from as we all learn differently. As long as you’re getting the info you need and the questions answered, you’re good. Keep up the good work 🤙

I possess a 1977 VW 1600L, once belonging to my Dad, but it experienced an engine fire from a fuel line leak, resulting in rear damage. It remained inactive for 13 years, anticipating a comprehensive restoration. With limited mechanical expertise, I've dedicated hours to learn about VW Bug repairs. Discovering your channel, showcasing a more intricate restoration, has motivated me to embark on the long-postponed restoration of my own Bug. Grateful for the inspiration.

Good luck with the restoration. VW Beetle is one of my favorite classic cars. Quite a good starting car to learn repairs too.

6:37: That's a semi-trailing arm off a torsion bar. Also, you need to buy carbide drill bits if you are trying to drill through structural steel.

15:27 Yes, it’s important to use the proper tools when pulling those gears. The crank and cam gear were mated with that case by an x concentration camp employee 55 years ago. The cam gear is “hobbed” -5- +5 so there were many cams set before him, and he chose the best one that matched the case, and crank gear. He would set the cam and crank in place then back up the crank to see if the cam hopped out of the saddles. Even today, there are matching engines to be had, that are perfectly serviceable. So, what I am saying is try to fix that one tooth. Because a new chinesium crank gear is going to make your engine make noise. And making noise means making metal. Keep on keeping on, we all make mistakes. I just fixed the oil leak on my 67 due to putting the Wong oil cooler seals in place. Great video

Since you're asking for advice...I'm in the middle of my third low budget engine build now. You should add parts to the case incrementally and tighten it up to ensure you have free rotation. Crankshaft first, assemble halves, tighten the 6 case bolts, see if everything rotates freely. Disassemble and add the cam, reassemble, and rotate - but this time add some of the nuts around each end. Still rotating freely? now add the lifters and get the sealant out and do the assembly. Then check for smooth rotation again. I sand/polish/grind a lot of stuff to make it work, really pisses the FB experts off, but the engines run fine.

Just found your videos and looks like you’re making great progress! I have a 72 Super Beetle.. easily one of the most rewarding, yet frustrating projects I’ve worked on. Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out!

Your suspension is called independent rear suspension or IRS. Before 68 was a swing axle design
@michaelconverse5127
@michaelconverse5127 4 ай бұрын
The earlier models had independent suspension as well-vws had four wheel independent suspension since the beginning. You’re correct about the earlier models being swing axle -the later models (68 up for automatic stick shift and 69 up for manual ) had double jointed rear axles.

I would recommend getting a vw service manual. The orange Bentley is a great tool to have. Take plenty of notes.

"Hats off" to you young man, you seem to be doing fine at this project. I did a similar job to a 1959 camper (bought for £18)back when I was 25. I used it for many years as a daily driver but in those days (I'm 79 now), there was not the spares support there is now and I had to let it go .Above all enjoy and have fun on your journey. Best regards from Ireland.

I myself would probably replace the gear that looks to be bent on the edge or atleast file it to the point it wont make contact with the gear thats good. Nothing like gear shavings to ruin bearings

Don’t sweat it. Only thing I’d worry about is condition of the tunnel on the chassis. Check out the frame head before u invest a lot o time and floor pans. Maybe donor?

Great job buddy. Great self challenge. It’s intimidating for sure. I have yet to do this and I have been working on vws for at least 20 years. But I have challenged myself to finally try. I found a used engine at a swapmeet and my plan is to rebuild it. I hope you clean all that soda media out really well. That will destroy your engine. You mentioned a dishwasher. That might work but prob better to use a ton of brake or parts cleaner and compressed air. I would even soak the entire case in a cleaner or solvent or maybe even dish soap could work. I’m not sure if soda blasting the case was a good idea because it could damage the newly cut bearing seats. Prob shoulda asked the mechanic dude what was best way to clean after he cut it

It has been a challenge for sure but rewarding. Yes I didn’t show in the video but I cleaned the case very well with brake clean and compressed air! The soda is not very abrasive at all just enough to clean up what’s needed.

17:50 use only Permatex aviation sealant….its cheap, and works best. Messy….yes. But you won’t have leaks. Use it on every sealing surface, o ring, tube seal etc. and your engine won’t leak mung and drool.

Lol to remove debris you going to use soda/sand to remove it. Haha wtf... Now every oil gally is full of soda. Just use degreaser and a clean paint brush. To clean the gear, use a file not sand paper. but nice first build
