They have DNA evidence now for the Janet Brown murder - a male did it but no match as yet. I wish they'd carry out familial genetic tracing like they do in the US. I know they do to a certain extent - such as if a close match is found on DNA database they may look into family members but its not to the same extent as looking at "23 & Me" etc for example. Get the brute!!!

I love watching these old episodes from the 80s and 90s But what it really shows is how technology and forensics have advanced in recent years. So different these days.

Tracy Turner turned out to be a victim of the notorious suspected serial killer, Alun Kyte. He's suspected of numerous murders of female sex workers including the crimewatch case from 1984 of Yvonne Coley in Birmingham. Kyte also committed a range of other crimes. When he worked as mechanic he would often take customers' cars and drive up to a thousand miles round motorway service stations without the owners' knowledge, to pick up sex workers (apparently motorway service stations were notorious back then for sex workers). He was a prolific thief and conman, and once stole £700 from his father to feed his gambling habit. In 2023 he was also convicted for historic sex offences against a young boy who lived near him. He had regularly physically and sexually abused the boy in the late 80s and threatened to kill his parents if he told. Oddly, Kyte was also reported to have been kidnapped himself by a man in 1994, who stole £55 from him.

The Trevor Bradley case was linked to two other murders of men and was solved over a decade later. The murderer was Robin Ligus who said he'd committed the burglaries to fuel his drug addiction. There were another two murders potentially linked to him. He had first murdered a 75 year old man, Robert Young, in his home during a burglary. Trevor Bradley was his second victim, and then a third man Brian Coles six months later. Ligus had serious mental health issues and was convincted after confessing to the murders to his cell mate. He was declared insane and held in a secure hospital, where he died in 2023.

Violent crime reached its peak in the UK in 1995 when, according the House of Lords online Library, a massive 4.7% of the UK adult population were the victims of violent crime. After that, crime started to absolutely plummet, including an unprecedent 44% drop in the 10 years to 2005. Crime has continued to drop and as of 2023 was at its lowest ever levels.

Pretty sure the actor playing the rapist in Prestatyn played the part of a rapist in London who raped a lady in Notting Hill. Can’t remember which episode now but the victim a white Porsche and her father had just died a few days before the incident. The rapist drove a Japanese car and sold the victims watch after the rape. Which episode was it

The Fred Maltby and Joe Rylatt murders were solved a couple of years later. A few months after the attacks, people on a boating lake found the an axe, the murder weapon, on an island in the middle of the lake. Forensics then had a huge stroke of luck. They found fragments of paint that turned out to only be sold by one retailer in the UK, who in turn had sold most of their stock to a local company that made industrial cooling equipment. The police looked over all the employees and their attention focused on Dennis Smalley, who had been questioned earlier in the investigation as he had been one of the people who'd borrowed money from Joe Rylatt. He had claimed to have been babysitting his children on the night of Rylatt's murder, but he appears to have had something of a reputation and a neighbour was watching the house out of concern for kids, and noted that Smalley left the house before the time of Rylatt's murder. It turned out that Smalley had grown up with Rylatt's younger brother and in the school holidays they had worked on Fred Maltby's farm. It turned out that Smalley had huge debts and that was the motive for the killing. Visitor books showed that Rylatt had visited Smalley three times at work (no doubt to get his money back) and the two were seen arguing. The whole motive seems to have been money. There had been misplaced local rumours that Maltby had buried a fortune on his property, and of course Smalley owed Rylatt debts. Smalley died in his cell in 2005 aged 59 of asthma and heart problems.

The Geraldine Palk case was solved ten years later with advances in DNA techniques. The murderer was Mark Hampson, a carpet fitter from Taff’s Well, who was already in jail for another offence. He was given a life setence in 2001 and died in jail in 2007.

So what was going on in 1991? Crime had been going up and up from the 1960s onwards and it rocketed in the 1980s in large part because of mass unemployment. It was accompanied by a wave of riots in 1981 and 1985. The economy picked up from around 1987 but by the early 1990s, Britain had plunged into a deep recession again. It was the era when many people had their homes repossessed and unemployment also soared. Crime started to rocket again and it was estimated that one car was being stolen every minute in 1991 (the year when "joyriders" came to public attention). We also saw another wave of rioting (famously in the North East), and crime reached an all time peak in the 1992-1995 period. Since then, crime has consistently plummeted. As of 2023, it was at an all time low. Sources: Office of Narional Statistics website. Houses of Parliament website.

A shame there isn't more historic ITN elections coverage out there. All the surviving BBC elections are, due to having been repeated on BBC Parliament (and the 70, 79 and 97 ones are on the iPlayer... though the 97 one is caption-less, but the version with the captions is on KZbin), but pre-1997, apart from some brief clips of 87 and 92, the 4 hours you've uploaded of 83 is pretty much all there is from ITN. Would love to see them out there. Particularly as ITN held onto their 59, 64 and 66 coverage on videotape, when the BBC only have theirs on scratchy telerecordings. Interesting just how much more basic and primitive the graphics are than the ones the BBC were using that year as well.

I posted most of the BBC Parliament elections on here about 10 to 15 years ago but deleted most of them. I can't remember why I deleted them. At that time you had to only upload 10 mins at a time, so you had to break each election into a large number of segments. I also posted ITN's 1992 election night show on here at one time. I have every ITN election night show from 1992 to the present day on VHS video or DVD.

What I love about England is that from the 1950's to today, they always support Black Artists. The 1980's were a comeback of sorts for them, The Temptations, and The O'Jays. they all had hit records. Also The video from Loco in Acapulco featured clips from The Lloyd Thaxton Show that also featured performances by Ben E. King who co wrote Stand By Me. Lloyd Thaxton also was the founder of Tiger Beat Magazine that debuted in 1965 is the longest running Teen Magazine in US Publishing for young people. In 1971 they created Right On the first African American Teen Magazine. Also The Four Tops, Temptations, and Smokey Robinson hold the distinction of appearing on American Bandstand from the 1960's to the 1980's until "Bandstand" went off the air in 1989. They also hold the distinction of being the Group that stayed together longer than any other group in music who originally started out as The Four Aims.
