Useful behind the scenes. Props to the director and yourself as I couldn't imagine having to coordinate all those people. Out of interest what do you think about tailoring narratives such that they are affordable and logistically simpler to shoot? I've done some calculations and think if you do handheld, black and white, 2-3 actors its possible to make a features on 16mm for <$10k. I also feel that those limitations can also be a blessing. The biggest challenge for me is choosing what to make a film about. Have you ever wanted to direct? You've got the kit, thats a significant part of the battle.
@nkosiroma
@nkosiroma 4 күн бұрын
All props to the producers for the logistical acrobatics they had to go through for this shoot. To answer your question, I think you have to start with the story you want to tell, not with the budget. The only time a film is untethered is in the writing process. Every step after that, limitations will be imposed. It’s nearly impossible to get a film off the ground, so rather than chopping up the story to make it less complex for the sake of money, I’d put the work into finding ways to get the money to make the dream project. At the end of the day it takes tremendous effort, so might as well work toward what you really want to make and will be proud of 10 years from now. I write and direct as well. You can check out the trailer for my most recent work, Method, on the channel.

You are referring to Super 8, not "8mm", which are two completely different formats that were used in different generations (normal 8 in the 1930s to 50s, Super 8 in 1960s to 80s) has completely different perf and screen sizes, using spolls instead of cartridges, cameras that don't even look nor work alike and quality that is drastically different too. Its only because of the similar sounding names that almost everyone confuses the two. I just want to inform people who don't know otherwise, I got it just a simply mistake, but believe it or not, it makes people sounds like they don't really know what they're talking about. I guess it doesn't make it better that normal 16 and super 16 are the completely opposite, its the exact same format, it's only referring to the size of the camera gate (or simply in simple terms the aspect ratio recording onto the physical film itself (normal: 4:3, super: 1.66.1), literally just a little more space to the right.

Super interesting watch, thanks so much Nkosi! I'm curious if you have any advice when it comes to building relationship with director's to collaborate on narrative projects like this?
@nkosiroma
@nkosiroma Ай бұрын
This job was a little different, because most of the relationship was built after I was hired. Regardless, I try to be myself while matching the director’s energy, meeting them where they’re at experience wise, and providing options to help inform their decisions while maintaining the initial vision. I could probably make a whole video on this haha.
