It depends on your discipline. In the sciences you wouldn’t use “I” but “we” is often used. But you can insert your voice without “I” or “we” by adding hedges or boosters and the way you develop your argument.

Extremely helpful. At the coursework level this is beaten out of us. Then at ABD level we struggle to find our voice again during dissertation and your chair gets frustrated.
