So good (though my wallet might not agree...). Interested in what you think of the Tyora Moody series with Joss Miller. I enjoy her writing but feel like it takes a book or 2 for me to get into the character. I read Double Mocha and it was okay. I have the next one - A Latte Mayhem on deck. Have you read any of her other series? I love the Eugeenia Patterson ones that feature a retired Black couple solving mysteries. Very gentle reads. I also like her Serena Manchester ones. I'm excited about Its Elementary! I've read some of her YA which were enjoyable so looking forward to her first mystery! Looking forward to your thoughts on that one. Great post with some really intriguing entries!!

Listennnnn. I hear YOU! I try to use my library to dabble and taste test, but it be hard. I be torn between supporting the author and struggling with deciding when I want to read whatever particular book. So I don't want to hold onto a library book just because. But that's my own unreasonable anxiety in action. Anyway, I hope you enjoy The Jigsaw Man.

Thank you so much for this review! I first impulse bought this novel and was immediately disappointed when the narrator began fetishizing black men in like the first 4 lines haha. I had to put the book down after reading all the objectifying and fetishizing terms in the first 3 pages. I've read a bit more now and it is getting better, but I was afraid that in the end it would be a book without substance. So thank you so much for reaffirming that this IS worth reading! By the looks of it, it seems that William the character is purposefully problematic and not the author. So that calms me down quite a bit haha

Thanks for this review! I've just put in a reserve for when it comes to my library. Have you read An Ordinary Wonder by Buki Papillon? The author is also Nigerian, and it follows the main character Otto, an intersex child growing up in Nigeria throughout the 90s. It's intense due to the trauma they experience (check the content warnings if you need), but there are lovely moments and relationshps as well. It's beautifully written and Yoruba mythology is woven into the story.

Great review. Having just read Devices and Desires I agree with your overall assessment. What sets James apart from many other mystery writers for me, is the psychological depth of her characterizations. There is always some past incident that a character may brood upon years later, and she shows how that affects the character's behaviour in the present. It makes the story quite a bit more interesting. The dynamics of the police interrogations vary greatly according to the character involved - she handles these elements perfectly. I found the political eco-terrorist subplot to be a bit out of left field, honestly. But the attempts by the young boyfriend to snoop into Caroline Amphlett's past, and especially the conversation with the old housekeeper, Mrs. Beasley were a highlight. You're right that James is a very literate, and at times even literary writer, which is a breath of fresh air when it comes to mystery novels. I had to re-read some passages, and found myself reaching for the dictionary more than a few times. Thanks for the review!

Currently about a third of the way through it and I’m not loving it. It’s a little cheesy so far. I’m going to finish it and hopefully it will improve. So far, I don’t get the great reviews it’s getting, but maybe I just don’t like the “cozy mystery” genre very much. I’m having a hard time with some things that seem unrealistic or too simplified for the sake of the plot. It makes more sense now that I know it’s a character driven story. Thanks for your honest review.
