I .. honestly don't get the allure of eating in your car. No place to wash your hands, your car gets dirty, you can´t really drive and eat anyway, you are waiting anyway, so might as well get out and stretch your legs even if you have no time and get a to-go order. The second part - too much parking - could be, in many places - fixed easily. Instead of each business fiercely defending their spaces, and you drive 100 feet from Safeway to the UPS store, pool the parking. And of course, permit-wise, adjust for the type of business. A bodega needs more than a barber-shop for the same area - how many people's hair can the barber cut at the same time ?

It’s kinda wild how this is banned everywhere when like, those sorts of things are part of why I love living in Minneapolis (though the zoning got stricter and a bunch of that is grandfathered in here too because of course, but it’s still everywhere within city limits)

Pedestrian islands are fine. It's large-radius turns that are the problem. An island is helpful if you're trying to cross four lanes of traffic on foot, as long as the physical structure of the intersection makes drivers stop at a sharp corner when turning instead of zooming around a bend. For that matter, large-radius turns on _roads_ are fine too. Stroads are the problem. But people do have reason to travel more than a few blocks within urban areas. We need some sort of intra-urban roads or through streets. My preferred format is what's sometimes called a "boulevard": a road with a street on each side. The road in the middle can function as a road, because there aren't people trying to turn on and off, or pull over and park, or leave a parking space and merge into traffic. They do all of the local-access stuff from the street on each side. Slow traffic is physically separated from through traffic.

One thing I cannot stand about these places is the food curfew where only the drive-thru is open. Like only people in cars deserve to eat after 9/10pm. I get that drive-thrus are convenient and sometimes I just wanna shave time, but I do prefer to park and just go in. The only time saved is the walking to and from the car. Might as well just be a drive-in. At least Rally's have walk-up windows. Maybe we should bring back drive-ins and slow down America some.

Honestly car manufacturers should have to provide everyone with a free car because we all pay taxes for the roads yet only people who can afford cars are able to use them. In other words, without road taxes, car manufacturers would not be able to sell their products. Seems like a giveaway to them.

We have a similar chick-fil-A that was built right on the Atlanta beltline (a bike/ped path with planned transit). It’s such a disaster that city council passed an ordinance banning any new drive-thrus near the Beltline. Progress!

You’ve managed to perfectly describe Australian culture. I live in Brisbane and there are hundreds of coffee shops and cafes dotted around the suburbs in old converted houses. We incorporated the village lifestyle of the UK with every suburb having its own small commercial zone for your local butcher, baker, hairdresser etc. and the cafe culture of the more recent post WWII Greek and Italian immigrants to create an idyllic society.

I 100% understand why to push back against the slu station. That area gets insane rush hour traffic which could spill over into I5 and for 4 years of development?? It’s a tough sell when the alternative isn’t really worse.

Please don't ever give money to Chick-fil-A. The spend a huge amount of money funding anti-gay and anti-trans legislation. They are a hate group. Stop eating there. Stop working there. Stop doing anything that helps Chick-fil-A, even if their chicken sandwiches taste good.

The reason why the company wants drive thru only is because it costs less to service each customer than sit in customers. That is why chick fill a is mostly doing this.

The baanks I think are uniquly american insanity but in london (uk) their is a single story mcdonalds drive thru with a surface car park surrounded by skyscrapers and with a consumerbase where having never been to a drive thru (my case) or at most having been a few times while out of town. We also have some that go in the ground floor of blocks of flats which is quite impressive and probably using some of the generaly excessive post war flats ground/basement parking facilities but still feels rather silly.

This is why I would like a complete ban on ANY SUVs in my city. I propose a new law that would prohibit personal vehicles over these dimension restrictions below. This will eliminate virtually all crossovers and SUVs. Plus, a displacement limit of 3 liters. Vehicles closer to these restrictions will incur a much higher road tax than smaller cars. Here is a summary. (For consumer vehicles) Dimension laws (no more than): (Length: 5 meters) (Width: 1.9 meters or 74.8 inches wide) (Height: 1.5 meters for cars over 4.3 meters in length, 1.6 meters for cars under 4.25 meters long, and 1.7 meters for MPVs (not SUVs) of any size below the maximum length and width restrictions). Engine displacement laws (no more than): 3 liters CO2 Emission laws (no more than): 125 g/km on official WTLP charts. Road tax (% of maximum dimension restrictions) 95% or more: 55% of purchase price 85%: 45% of purchase price 75%: 35% of purchase price 60%: 20% of purchase price 50% or less: 10% of purchase price This means an executive car like a Mercedes E class would have a tax rate of over half the purchase price of the vehicle ($60,000 msrp + $33,000 tax = $93,000 total cost) (For commercial vehicles) (MUST PROVE COMMERCIAL LICENCE and PROOF OF APPROPRIATE WORK) Dimension laws: varied depending on job type. (Example: Larger for construction vehicles and heavy machinery, smaller for delivery vans) Displacement laws: varied depending on job type. (up to 8 liters for construction vehicles, up to 3 liters for delivery vans) Emission laws: must have written permission if vehicle produces more than 350 g/km. Class 6+ trucks must have written permission and an appropriate job site (building/public works construction, demolition) and will be restricted within a designated area and route. Class 5 and below still must provide a commercial vehicle license and proof of job (meaning NO personal pickup trucks) but is mostly freely allowed to be anywhere unless marked otherwise. These strict laws will decrease pedestrian deaths as SUVs will be completely banned. The hefty road tax would also deter people from getting bigger vehicles and may even increase pedestrianization.

The justification they gave for not including mechs and bioweapons is exactly the same thing they used a decade ago for skyrim not having levitation magic, it's juts a ridiculous excuse in worlds where there's already people who break laws. Like, yeah, they'll hunt people down, displace and murder them, but they won't use banned magics/technologies....right.

The moment i get in a truck/suv i go into saftey mode and pay extra attention to everything. I also go slower and give more follow distance. Why can't people just get a full size sedan. Literally they're safer and easier to see around and maneuver also better on gas.

There seems to be something missing from the equation, if the centre is more eating, drinking and activity based, then more people will probably arrive using a transport method other than private vehicle. However, if the activity is primarily retail and people are going to be encouraged to spend, they will also need ways to get their purchases home, which would favour private vehicles as it is difficult getting a shopping cart full of food back home using public transport or on a bike. Underground or Multi-story parking can also be considered which would maximise the available land.

They need to stop allowing drive-thrus to impose inconveniences on others. 1. Don't make special modifications to the roads (e.g. extra left-turn cutouts to medians) just to accommodate one business. If that deters customers then find a better location. 2. Ticket drivers who block sidewalks or traffic lanes while waiting for the drive-thru. If there is no room then go somewhere else. Let the restaurant figure out how to appease angry customers who can't be served. 3. Eating while driving should be considered distracted driving and punished the same way.
