Love the B-50. A "perfected" Stratofortress with 5,000 more horsepower and a strengthened structure. I heavily modified a 1/48 scale B-29 into a KB-50J. Maybe the only one out there. The new engine nacelles and higher tail were the toughest to make. Go it hanging from the ceiling tanking 3 F-105s in my hobby room.

*_"A total of 31 safe, successful research flights were flown during those 25 weeks, accumulating 15 hours and 38 minutes of flight time and using four different versions of flight control software. The aircraft reached an altitude of 20,200 feet and a maximum angle of attack of 40 degrees. Both aircraft are on display in the Museum's Research & Development Gallery. The other prototype used in ground tests and as part of other evaluations is now displayed at the Air Force Test Flight Center Museum at Edwards AFB, California."_*

I think the RAF should have bought way more Vulcans than buy the Handley-Page Victor. The Vulcan proved to be a surprisingly capable bomber once the early wing troubles were overcome with the B.2 model, and if they had modernized the plane with Rolls-Royce Tay turbofans and an all-new digital cockpit for a three man crew, the Vulcan would likely still be operational in 2024 as a stand-off bomber platform.

I would say it’s still an F-16 variant but it’s a different enough derivative to earn it’s own designation

The Mark 2 did not operate during the war, iirc. It was only the Mark V model that was used for V-1 hunting ( along with other operational aircraft like the Spitfire )

During the 1960s, there was a squadron of A-5 Vigilantes that were assigned to NAS Sanford, Florida (now Sanford-Orlando International Airport). In 2003, a restored RA-5C Vigilante was put on display at the NAS Sanford Memorial Park (at the airport).

The undercarriage was not retractable. It was fixed. Interestingly it had only a battery for electrical power and fuel for about 15 min which made getting it shown to the Farnborough air show a tricky flight. I think I remember that it had balsa wood wing leading edges that could be varied.

I love when the Mitsubishi F-2 is called a copy. This is "basically" a new Jet just with a larger F-16 frame. Its like the Lancia 037 Stradale and Kimera EVO37.

The Honeywell E-6 autopilot was developed for the B-50 but cockpit pictures only show the older autopilot - anyone know if it was ever installed in the B-50? (was used in the B-36).
