Buzz from KZbin Channel Buzz1151 sent me a radio to restore. That was nice of him I thought... until I opened the box!
Now that the radio is working I need to work on the vinyl covered case, it's a mess, should I give it a quick clean or try and refurbish it?

Although we work differently to achieve the same goal...me with primative tools, and you with your great hi-tech stuff, we are the same, as we try to save and restore as many radios as we can, and people can watch our videos as we do it......I salute you my friend!🦘🦘🍺🍺 PS here's a little tip...when filming hammering, like you did with the rivets, speed up the hammering 4X when you edit the video...it sounds cool!! haha

I am not sure Buzz did you any great favors here, but, it really does look good. I have done a lot of these portable tube radios, they perform very well, but the cases are generally beat to death and look terrible.

Impressive re-covering it looks great. I like the Tipton-tip about spraying with lacquer and sanding smooth to aid adhesion. I did an old Dansette record player with new vinyl and it's starting to peel off - I'll try that method.

Trevor your leather man did such a nice job on that Portable radio case, I bet there is a lot of ranches that will miss his leather tack work. Nice job on the radio, particularly the cabinet, now that winter is moving in on Australia you and the wife should take a trip to fantasy Island and visit Manuel for a joint project.

Awesome resto mate, when I have recovered some my amps I find over lapping the vinyl then cut your line through both layers. A hard rubber roller can help to run out the covering on the larger surfaces. Good work David, last week I said the case looked like it was made from papier mache now it looks almost new. Once again good job mate.

I was wondering how you were going to replicate the lettering on the front. It looks absolutely spot-on! This radio was full of awkward detail repairs and you had to figure out how to go about them. Highly impressive result. It looks like it would've been very labour intensive building these in the first place.

The lettering looks perfect Paul, it's also very hard wearing and should stay put for years to come. It can even be put in a dishwasher. I wonder if they stamped out the vinyl and the ladies just had to glue them down 🙂

This material used to cover the radio cabinet is very reminiscent of a material I use to create old book trims and rigid covers for book bindings. The material is called Percalux, at least that's the name of the material around here. It resembles the texture of leather but is synthetic and has a part made of paper to adhere to the rigid surfaces of the book covers.

Wow, nice job David, that turned out better than I expected! In "Blazing a new trail" so to speak with new experimental techniques, you have managed to avoid disaster and end up with a restoration that looks as good as the original product (or better). Interesting material used in that case, some type of reinforced resin? I can't tell if it was molded or vacuum formed. RCA switched to Nylon for their portable radio cases in the early 1950's, which were marketed as "indestructible".
