It's important to take into account that George is directly related to the writing of the show so I dont think we'd been in a situation where this "isn't the intended Daemon". Also the books were written by "unreliable narrator's" so from the perspective of those around at the time. The books could essentially be seen as how the smallfolk or others in westeros viewed the events of the Targaryen civil war rather than what actually happened and that's what we're getting with the show.

The crew was not English. Only Blackthorne is English. They were a Dutch ship. After the Portugese and Spanish, the Dutch were the greatest sailing nation. England was late to the game of traveling the world. The Dutch quickly gained on Spain and Portugal.

Girl in the middle went from saying “juicy” every minute in the first film to quietly weeping in the last 30 minutes of this film. Character development unreal for her

The thing that makes lotr trilogy so great is that the movie doesn’t make you just sad, it makes you happy, remorseful, grieved, relieved, hopeful, and you could go on. The compounded feelings have so much density, and is layered so deeply. No other movie makes us feel this way, it is unmatched in its emotional impact.

I had been meaning to watch this one but just never got around to it, but after seeing this vid go up I decided to go check it out. Initially I was just gonna watch the first episode so I could turn around and watch the reaction, but then I got addicted and spent my weekend binge watching the whole season. Its so good, even with the "controversal" ending or whatever. I only just now even remembered to come watch the reaction because I saw the Ep2 upload lmao

When it comes to that scene with Halena mentioning how the bug no longer sings, If you notice, those look like little bird cages. Which brings me back to last season when Rahniese is having the discussion with Alicent about how shes a "Bird in a cage" and only wants to make a window in the walls of her prison.... Alicent no longer has ANY control. That window is now shut therefore the caged bird no longer sings. Represented by the fact she is dressing and behaving like the old caged bird she once was and now is again. Just a thought.

The Samurai’s design and skill in the crafting of the helmets and armour was incredible. Still my favourite warriors of all time 🙏even the weapons were unreal, and the time it took to craft some of those swords is a dedication in itself 🫡

Good all the way thru. Osaka was and remains one of the greatest cities. In history, this Dutch expedition started with 5 ships and 500 men. They didn't make it all the way around the world, ended with one ship and a handful of men.

Shogun is loosely based on a real story of William Adams (John Blackthorne) but the scene when John draws the world on the sand was true and lil fun fact is that Toranaga became depressed and furious when he found out how small Japan was on the "map".

Modern Japanese is not the same as the Japanese of 1600. It is like Shakespeare's English. In this drama, not only translators but also experts in old Japanese were involved in the writing of the script. Not all of the Japanese of 1600 has been reproduced, but at least, no one uses the Japanese language used in dramas on a daily basis in modern Japan. Some examples. Thank you. (modern)Arigatou gozaimasu. (drama)Katajikenou gozarimasuru. I understand. (m)shochi shimashita. (d)kokoroe mashita. Forgive me. (m)yurushite kudasai. (d)goyosha kudasai.

Why is everyone saying that this is "Game of Thrones"? The story is much older than Game of Thrones. This series is about an actually existing man. All the names in the novel (it is based on a novel by the same name) are exchanged. Toranaga is Tokugawa, to name the few. The first episode is called Angin (Angin is a title of a ship Pilot/Navigator) after the book with the same title. About an Englishman who piloted a Duch ship to Japan. The man lived in Japan and also became Samurai. His honorary title was "Angin Miura" given to him by the Japanese. His real name was William Adams.

I'm so miffed that they are making a 2nd season. They filmed the entirety of the book. When the show was running and before the show, they said this is going to be a miniseries. The beauty lives within it being contained. Making more seasons is cynical and I'm afraid it will destroy the series.

@27:55 Great catch, I did not notice this at first. The actress playing Mariko explained in an interview this version of Japanese is more archaic and poetic. Almost like Shakespearian English with a lot of thy's and thou's so to speak.

I watch a lot of anime (not that that makes me an expert on the Japanese language), and I wondered about the Japanese spoken in the show too. Mainly because when John said "thank you", he used katajikenai instead of something like arigato gozaimasu. So, I Googled what type of Japanese they speak in the show and found this answer: "it's actually 'jidaigeki Japanese' as spoken in Japanese period dramas, meaning pronounced like modern standard Japanese, but with some archaic/stereotypical vocabulary." There were also comments saying it's very formal. A comparison that came up quite a bit was that it's kinda the English equivalent of Shakespearean speech. Hopefully all of this is correct, since I got this information from a Google search and a few reddit threads talking about the Japanese used in the show. One more thing, that intro was hilarious with Carter trying to explain himself and everyone thinking he didn't understand. 😂

I'm Japanese and I can't hear your conversations perfectly, so I'm sorry if you guys have already mentioned it. If you are having trouble understanding Japanese history and geography, the official FX channel has a number of videos. They explain the history and background, the world situation, etc., and do not spoil the drama. It will be easier to understand if you watch them.
