This is just amazing! I am strugling with using to many colours and I need your kind of discipline in applying each layer in the right order and not messing it, I have it in everything else except exactly in painting where I need it the most:)) I manage well with portraits where I have no choice but My love is painting nature.

Thank you, Angie! Maybe you could try doing a grisaille as an underpainting, which means you're only using black and white and grey to set up the paintng. I did a KZbin video on the subject: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gF6Ym6CspM-Hq6s. Hope this helps!

@@PaintingSkies1 I am working now at a portrait, actually 2 haha but in my free time I enjoy dreaming about painting the ocean the sand the sky trees…is very hard for me as I find nature too incredibly beautiful and feel like…why bother? I will never be able haha watching you it gives me the courage. I was using before underpainting but usually with acrylics and is true is so easy to use the black and white especially for me as I was drawing for years black and white charcoal and it was so easy for me to achieve whatever using only charcoal. But then my grandad who was a painter, was urging me to try oil paints. Well…this is another animal haha. I set up my place, the primary colours, and then i add another tube, and another, and another, and another…terrible haha and even if I am the most disciplined person I know in my live, i become haotic and loose the pleasure, the moment… I need more experience.

@@PaintingSkies1 I ve just read the article on your blog about how you painted Tidal pool. This is how i usually paint using dry brush technique? I do not manage well lots of wet paints, probably being a graphic designer for so many years…i paint like I draw. And my other problem is how to get out of details and precision, i am trying to see only the colours but is hard i see it all including the smallest details they are pulling me inside haha

@@PaintingSkies1 Your stroke techniques. Your tips on blending tones to compliment or reflect the clouds in the sky and water, along with the light on the sand and waves are helpful. The way you explained how you hold a brush to create the visual idea of movement of water and the puffiness of clouds has helped me also. I try to mimic* your movements as much as possible but have to be really fast at it, because the acrylic dries so FAST! (I am not used to that)... But mostly your style of ease and calmness; when you bump into a problem with color or you decide to wipe out the whole section and redo it instills the confidence in me, to NOT BE AFRAID to do the same. Your videos give me so much insight (like the masking tape for the horizon line instead of sketching it in with chalk or something). Be it acrylic or oils or on canvas or paper, YOU, the Artist, shines through as strong and as lovely as your artwork. I WANT to paint skyscapes just like you. My attempts to copy your paintings are right fun too! Which brings me Joy which is also VERY helpful. Haha Please continue to upload MORE wonderful videos. I do SO appreciate your work. May I ask you if you provide reference images in your patreon lessons?
@PaintingSkies123 күн бұрын
Yes, but only when I keep close to the reference photos. In the full length video of the Blue Beach clip (available on my Patreon account) I did share the reference photo. Quite often though, I use more than one photo or I make a Photoshop collage and use that as a starting point. The actual painting can differ considerably and I only share this material when I think it serves a purpose in the video. Hope this answers your question!

Wow. Do you have any advice on keeping the layers thin enough to allow for this kind of 'impunity', so that you can remain open to changes later, but still maintain a pleasant working surface?
@PaintingSkies123 күн бұрын
I keep my paints rather thin, especially in the early stages of a painting, a yoghurt like consistency. It allows me to maintain a smooth surface (with the help of a stipple brush and a badger hair fan brush). I save the impasto (highlights on the clouds and such) for the later stages. I must say though, I don't mind working on a surface that is textured by older layers. It sometimes provides pleasant surprises.

Hi Janhendrik, I've noticed a few times you use what looks like a pencil to draw cloud outlines. Is it a pencil? If so, how do you keep it from smearing when the oils come in contact with it?
@PaintingSkies123 күн бұрын
Hi Steven, I use fairly hard pencils, at least HB. If you use softer pencils (2B or 3B) you will indeed get a mess. Just to be clear: when I was a student at the Academy I learned never to use pencil in combination with oils. The chemical reaction would damage your painting. I figured my work is not meant for the ages. Plus I never saw it in my work.

Can this technique be adopted unto ceiling murals?
@PaintingSkies129 күн бұрын
Using oils for a mural is a risky business, because the oils will seal the surface, preventing moisture traveling freely through the wall. Your paint may crack after a while. You can use the glazing technique with acrylics, but I'm not sure if that's also the case when doing a mural. I'm afraid you have to look for more info on the internet. Success!
@Feliciano6690Ай бұрын
Do you have to thin your oil paint or you can just use it the way it comes?
@PaintingSkies129 күн бұрын
You can certainly use oil paint without thinning it down. There are lots of painters who worke like that, in particular those who like a textured paint surface. It can take quite some time to dry though. If you want to use the glazing technique the way I do, using a medium is advised.

Does the liquin light gel irritate your nose? Do you need ventilation for it?

No, it doesn't irritate my nose, but some people find the smell unpleasant. It doesn't bother me, even more so because I work with the doors and windows open (weather permits).
