I still like listening to those old songs once in s while!!! Thanks Ace for planting the seed in me!!! You are honored on my wall in my lesson studio. Your #1 bud love ya Ace!!!!

Ace Frehley is so underrated for his influence on the rock guitar genre. There was not a kid in the 70s who didn't want to be Ace, including myself. He was a master at soloing and creating riffs. Respect.

Good thing it was the 70s. If he had started today he would've been living on the street with guitar skills like his, given the tremendous amount of talent of young players today.

@@verbotenco I must agree, I bought my 13 year old son a guitar expecting nothing but a thank you, but Intern, I was greeted with an amazing talent. The kid has no interest in pursuing this talent which boggles the mind. Whatever, he's the master of his own domain and I couldn't be more proud.

I was the dude that posted that Ace Frehley Solo Tokyo Japan 1977, WAY back when. And yeah, I absolutely agree with your take on it. While I appreciate a player’s speed and dexterity, this particular solo just sounds like the Marshalls are on the verge of going super nova, due to the anti gravitational feedback, black hole time dilation delays, and the Jendelian nebula pouring out of his LP. Cool you reposted it, and great commentary. RAWK!

Same here, I got my first guitar when I was 12 years old in 1974. I worked three Summer jobs to save up for a Twin Reverb, and then in 1977 I purchased a new Les Paul Deluxe. I miss the 1970s, I miss having almost unlimited time to play guitar......sigh That Twin Reverb was such a good amp I've used it all these years and still own it. I finally purchased an early Marshall 50W Plexi reissue to fulfill my Ace Frehley Les Paul/Marshall amp combination. Only regret, I should have purchased the Marshall amplifier 4 decades ago instead of waiting for it like a bucket list item.

Great vid, glad I saw that. Very haunting guitar tone. I'm a Bass Player. What many non-musicians, and some supposed musicians, fail to realize is how important guitar tone or sound really is. They think Flea just picks up a Bass and makes it sound funky. No. Flea is using amp/Bass settings + effects such as Q-Tron to create a great sound/tone and then playing. It's not just the finger skill or even musical knowledge of a player of any instrument, it's also that musician's ability to create a great sound. Hendrix for example was a master at creating great sounds. This performance by Ace was astounding.

I applaud you for posting this. Yes Ace is a great player that plays with a lot of feel ! I have noticed that a lot of guitar players look down and even shun players like Ace once they’ve crossed over to other styles of music ,country , jazz, classical, or whatever. Yet players like Ace are the ones who inspired them to pick up the guitar in the first place! Lol ! It’s like they’re embarrassed to admit it !..as if they have a certain aesthetic they have to adhere to or they themselves be shunned from their little cliquish community ..haha Ace’s solo album is a work of art from start to finish prove me wrong! I saw the Destroyer tour in Nashville at the Municiple Auditorium 7/21/76. As an almost 13-year-old kid who had been playing for about 2 years at the time, that concert sealed the deal. Ace was always my favorite KISS member, and a hero for a short time. As KISS crested in fame a few years later it took its toll on him. I last saw him play 3 years ago opening for Alice Cooper. Glad he's able to play still but he's a shadow of his former self...

I wouldn't consider ol' "Space Ace" Frehley a guitar "master", but he could really work those '70s rawk solo licks. And he did inspire a ton of kids to play guitar (including a certain Darrell Abbott, from the Metroplex).
@tenlittleindiansАй бұрын
I seen them live several times in that era. The flaming smoking guitar was always a nice touch. I'm wondering if he might have used a tape echo effect which would not have been a floor pedal? Tommy Bolin was playing with the James Gang earlier than this and used a tape echo on a stand on stage so he could twist the knobs himself live. Tommy Bolin's Standing In The Rain song from the James Gang Bang album features this classic tape echo effect at the opening of that track. On the album version they pan the opening left and right in your headphones and it took me years to figure out how he made that sound. There's also a live version of Tommy with the James Gang on The Midnight Special show and you can see his echo stand and watch him twist it's knobs. That video is now on KZbin. Ace has a very similar tape echo sound in this video.
@justinmeyersguitaristАй бұрын
yeah im sure it was a tape echo for 1977.. i was just saying if you wanted to get that sound now, you can use a delay pedal and mess with delay time/feedback
@tenlittleindiansАй бұрын
@justinmeyersguitarist I bought a Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man delay pedal in the 70's and it sounds similar to my Roland Space Echo tape delay so I can't say what Ace was using back then. I do know it was either pre-recorded or the echo effect was done from the mixer board back then when I seen them live. Being a guitar player I was always watching the guitar players and checking out what I could see of their gear from the crowd view. Ace was not doing the knob twisting for sure.

To me a far better example of a Guitarist who didn't know a lot of theory, had an advanced ear for music and the ability to execute technical solos was Edward Van Halen. Talk about a naturally gifted musician with an incredible ear.

EVH actually had a rather strong knowledge of music theory as his pops was a traveling musician and brought the family along his travels. EVH was winning piano contest very young. He’s known for his leads, but was a masterful rhythm player and his technical knowledge of wiring and amplifiers led to the development of some of today’s gear. ⚙️. Just thought I’d share.

Feedback is a function of speaker to instrument proximity, and any form amplification will do it as long as there is a speaker in the loop. As for Ace's tone, I'll agree it's pretty cool; but there is absolutely no musicality in this solo, just a mish mash of basic pentatonic riffs.
