Id still like to know why they changed the drag adjustment.
@tunanorth18 күн бұрын
The "pre set" dial now requires the angler to put the reel in freespool, and then pull the dial out to turn. As soon as you let go, the dial drops back into place and won't turn. This prevents the pre-set from being turned accidentally, and in particular prevents inexperienced or excited anglers from turning it during a fight with a fish, which not only may cause the fish to escape, but will also damage the reel.

@tunanorthАй бұрын
The rods from the Carnage III "boat" series are nice rods, but not designed for West Coast/San Diego style fishing. In particular, the "boat" series also uses a different line rating system than west coast rods do. The rods discussed in the video are all from the Carnage III "west coast" series.

My 2 goto finess flyline reels are both size 400 baitcasters, one of which is a lefty Daiwa Lexa 400 TW in 7.1:1 gear ratio and a lefty Piscifun Alijos 400 in 6.6:1. Both reels have 40lb Maxcuatro braid and fish 25lb Seaguar Gold Label fluoro on one and 30lb Seaguar Gold Label in the other. Not only can I cast that sardine out much farther than an open face conventional reel, the sardines just swim out much easier due to a significantly lighter spool. On my last trip out fishing Cortez Bank I was the hotstick. Not only did I get first blood I also got my 2 fish limit before anyone else was able to get the 3rd bkuefin onto the boat. That day I proceeded to hook and land a total of 5 bluefin all 40-45lb fish and a PB yellowtail estimated to be 35-40lbs. All fish were caught using baitcasters that day.

How would you fill a Penn SQL30BSW with line for tuna 60-120 lb. And also what pole would you match with.
@tunanorth2 ай бұрын
The Squall series reels are not really designed for "San Diego style" tuna fishing such as on the Searcher. The graphite frame will have some "flex" , and at 47 ounces, the reel is too large and heavy for jigging. A better choice would be the Fathom II series, with the much lighter 24 ounce 40N 2-speed size best for that size tuna. If you are doing more general purpose-type trolling applications in other areas, The SQL30VSW does a decent job with 50-60 pound mono, and no heavier than 80 lb.

Steve Carson attempting to remain relevant! Outstanding! Steve could sell sand in Arabia and lies to the RNC, but yoyo fishing for Yellowtail, not so much. Last thing you would ever want to use is a rod over 7', unless you happened to be 8' tall. Penn reel, well, last yoyo Yellowtail I took on a Penn was with a 349H Master Mariner! Two speed, yes, first and foremost. Anybody over 60 absolutely. Tuna! Yellowtail will kick you butt faster than any fish and to get them you need to wind! As for the #1 yoyo jig, it is Salas 6x, period; with the JRI 66 second. You're out of your depth on this one. You're a bait guy. I saw your gear getting on a boat in June. On my upcoming 8 I'll take 7 yoyo rods 40, 50, multiple 60, 80, & 100- the 100# will use 3 speed reel. Anyway, off the elliptical now. Have a great evening

Hey Steve! Love your presence on the forums, sport shows, and on KZbin! Was curious if flylining this with a fluorocarbon leader of 30-40lb during the daytime is possible? I was hoping to bring less rod/reel tackle and just use the Penn VISX 16 during both the day and night.
@tunanorth4 ай бұрын
In general, that would not be a suitable combination. The spool is quite heavy in comparison with the typical spools on 30-40 lb. reels. The heavy rod would be more likely to cause a pullout of the small hooks used when flylining, and the heavy braid will cause a lot of drag, preventing the bait from swimming well. The synergy of a well-matched rod-reel-line-terminal gear is important.

What size hook bud
@tunanorth4 ай бұрын
It varies a little bit, depending on the size of the bait, and the pound test line you are using. Generally, a #1/0 to #3/0 is about right.
@bobworthier79996 ай бұрын
Would it be better to use a 30lb leader on a heavier outfit (60-80lb for example) instead of using a true 30lb outfit? With the larger rig you’ll have more line capacity
@tunanorth6 ай бұрын
Several drawbacks: most notably the heavier braid and much heavier spool of the larger reel will restrict the bait's swimming ability. Heavier rod makes it more likely that the relatively small hook will pull out. Also, the heavier rod won't flex much, which is part of the key in tiring the fish out with the fairly light drag.

Hey Steve. Would the 6’6 30-80 be a good rod. Not sure if that was the length you suggested. It shows as a trolling rod but???? Short and stout to pull on the yo-yo fish. Thanks.
@tunanorth6 ай бұрын
It would be an excellent choice for yo-yo fishing. Assuming you mean the 6-6 30-80 Carnage III "West Coast" model, its working title during development was "Panga Special".

Years ago before the bluefin were close and most of the local trips were targeting yellowfin and skipjack I remember using coltsnipers for them, but casting them like a surface iron and just ripping them back after letting them sink a bit. Does that work on bluefin when they’re boiling or when people talk about fishing coltsnipers for bluefin are they generally talking about fishing them vertically?

Is the fathom 15ld2 really capable of 30-80 pound tuna on a flyline? I checked and all the specs seem good except the drag is kinda low. Could you maybe share some personal experience on what you think about the reels effectiveness and capabilities?
@jmoney59146 ай бұрын
No I wouldn't want to hook anything over 50. You need a 30 or 40 for this type of fishing
@tunanorth6 ай бұрын
The reel is absolutely capable, but should only be used in those exceptional circumstances when the fish won't bite otherwise. Short version: set the "Strike" drag at 8 pounds, let them run [remember that you have 400 yards of line]. If you actually get spooled, the fish was likely over 75 pounds. Get as much line back in "high" as you can get, while the fish rests. The fish will probably make another very long run against 8 pounds of drag. After that, bump the drag to 10 pounds, and keep getting back as much line as you can. Once the fish is "straight up and down", you can bump the drag to 12 pounds, and drop the reel to "Low". All of this depends on fresh line, and properly tied knots.

Is a Penn fathom 15 really capable of that they seem to have low drag max 20? And if your flylining you would probably only get about 17 on sunset without locking out the spool.
@tunanorth6 ай бұрын
Correct. In general, you will set the Strike Drag at 8 lbs, and Full at 10 lbs., which allows you to go to 14-15 at Sunset if necessary, which is the absolute highest you would ever go with 30 lb. line.
