Is the Penn VISX 16 able to be casted with about 6 ounces of lead and a small whiting head for bait? I have a Penn senator 4/0 and want to get something comparable in size because I can cast the 4/0 without issue.

Steve Carson attempting to remain relevant! Outstanding! Steve could sell sand in Arabia and lies to the RNC, but yoyo fishing for Yellowtail, not so much. Last thing you would ever want to use is a rod over 7', unless you happened to be 8' tall. Penn reel, well, last yoyo Yellowtail I took on a Penn was with a 349H Master Mariner! Two speed, yes, first and foremost. Anybody over 60 absolutely. Tuna! Yellowtail will kick you butt faster than any fish and to get them you need to wind! As for the #1 yoyo jig, it is Salas 6x, period; with the JRI 66 second. You're out of your depth on this one. You're a bait guy. I saw your gear getting on a boat in June. On my upcoming 8 I'll take 7 yoyo rods 40, 50, multiple 60, 80, & 100- the 100# will use 3 speed reel. Anyway, off the elliptical now. Have a great evening

You only bring 7? I do still have some Salas 6XJr's and regular 6X's that I got from Dal Salas, peg-leg and all. I like them, but still like Tady 4/0's a little bit more. I'm also starting to really like the "Brass Monkey" by 2 Fish Jigs for yo-yo'ing too.

Hey Steve! Love your presence on the forums, sport shows, and on KZbin! Was curious if flylining this with a fluorocarbon leader of 30-40lb during the daytime is possible? I was hoping to bring less rod/reel tackle and just use the Penn VISX 16 during both the day and night.
@tunanorth
@tunanorth 15 күн бұрын
In general, that would not be a suitable combination. The spool is quite heavy in comparison with the typical spools on 30-40 lb. reels. The heavy rod would be more likely to cause a pullout of the small hooks used when flylining, and the heavy braid will cause a lot of drag, preventing the bait from swimming well. The synergy of a well-matched rod-reel-line-terminal gear is important.

What size hook bud
@tunanorth
@tunanorth 2 күн бұрын
It varies a little bit, depending on the size of the bait, and the pound test line you are using. Generally, a #1/0 to #3/0 is about right.

Would it be better to use a 30lb leader on a heavier outfit (60-80lb for example) instead of using a true 30lb outfit? With the larger rig you’ll have more line capacity
@tunanorth
@tunanorth Ай бұрын
Several drawbacks: most notably the heavier braid and much heavier spool of the larger reel will restrict the bait's swimming ability. Heavier rod makes it more likely that the relatively small hook will pull out. Also, the heavier rod won't flex much, which is part of the key in tiring the fish out with the fairly light drag.

Hey Steve. Would the 6’6 30-80 be a good rod. Not sure if that was the length you suggested. It shows as a trolling rod but???? Short and stout to pull on the yo-yo fish. Thanks.
@tunanorth
@tunanorth Ай бұрын
It would be an excellent choice for yo-yo fishing. Assuming you mean the 6-6 30-80 Carnage III "West Coast" model, its working title during development was "Panga Special".

Thanks for the quick reply!! Yes it is a west coast model. Glad I picked wisely. One of the many Penn rod setups I picked up this season from your suggestions. Your short and to the point tackle tip Thursday's are great. I’ll give it a slow troll shot as well. 👍

Been using izorline first string on our charter boat for 30 years, have not found a better line. The copolymer seems as abrasion resistant as flouro, and knot strength is amazing. Unfortunately, cant buy in NZ any longer, so I order bulk spools from charkbait in the USA

What are your thoughts on the thicker Owner treble hook impeding the action of the jig? Especially on the smaller jigs (60 or 80 gram)

On the very small jigs, you are just using a #1 treble, not that thick, but still stronger than what they come with from the factory.

Years ago before the bluefin were close and most of the local trips were targeting yellowfin and skipjack I remember using coltsnipers for them, but casting them like a surface iron and just ripping them back after letting them sink a bit. Does that work on bluefin when they’re boiling or when people talk about fishing coltsnipers for bluefin are they generally talking about fishing them vertically?

Is the fathom 15ld2 really capable of 30-80 pound tuna on a flyline? I checked and all the specs seem good except the drag is kinda low. Could you maybe share some personal experience on what you think about the reels effectiveness and capabilities?
@jmoney5914
@jmoney5914 2 ай бұрын
No I wouldn't want to hook anything over 50. You need a 30 or 40 for this type of fishing
@tunanorth
@tunanorth 2 ай бұрын
The reel is absolutely capable, but should only be used in those exceptional circumstances when the fish won't bite otherwise. Short version: set the "Strike" drag at 8 pounds, let them run [remember that you have 400 yards of line]. If you actually get spooled, the fish was likely over 75 pounds. Get as much line back in "high" as you can get, while the fish rests. The fish will probably make another very long run against 8 pounds of drag. After that, bump the drag to 10 pounds, and keep getting back as much line as you can. Once the fish is "straight up and down", you can bump the drag to 12 pounds, and drop the reel to "Low". All of this depends on fresh line, and properly tied knots.

Is a Penn fathom 15 really capable of that they seem to have low drag max 20? And if your flylining you would probably only get about 17 on sunset without locking out the spool.
@tunanorth
@tunanorth Ай бұрын
Correct. In general, you will set the Strike Drag at 8 lbs, and Full at 10 lbs., which allows you to go to 14-15 at Sunset if necessary, which is the absolute highest you would ever go with 30 lb. line.

I picked up a fathom 15ndl2 black from australia loaded it up with 350yds of 30lb suffix blue camo with a small space for about 50 feet of 25lb topshot for a stealthy tuna rig. Also just picked up a penn torque 15xnld and loaded it to the brim with 425yds of 40lb blue camo suffix. Going to be fishing that one with a 15 to 25ft 30# flourocarbon leader. Cant wait to hook up on some bft. The 15xnld does have a bit more line capacity. They are close though.

The rubber band method gets tangled, so the bait can't move with the line shortened by being tangled. Hmmm... the bait has zero line to move with the drop-shot method. 😅

That knot is good for 100# mono but what do you like with 30# mono???
@tunanorth
@tunanorth 3 ай бұрын
When chasing large-grade fish with 30-pound mono, loop knots are not usually the best choice. In one of the other recent Searcher TTT vids, we discuss the "sliding sinker rig" for yellowtail. Most commonly used with 30 or 40-pound mono, the most popular knot is the single San Diego Jam, although the Palomar Knot is also good. There are numerous KZbin videos demonstrating how to tie these.

@tunanorth
@tunanorth 3 ай бұрын
Interesting. If you look in many knot books, it shows this knot with only two turns, which may be OK for trout etc, but not nearly strong enough for SW species. Probably three would be sufficient in many cases, but four adds just a bit of extra margin, especially if you are going to "clip" one of the legs as shown in the other video. In line this heavy, five just will not tighten up properly.

I have a Penn fathom 40nld2 For dropper loop and knife jigs a fathom 25 for flyline and now I’m thinking of getting a fathom 15xnld2. What line would be best to have on my fathom 25nld2 I currently have 350 yards of 50 pound braid with maybe a 30 yard mono top shot. Do you think 65 would be better I ideally want to be able to fish my fathom for tuna 50-110 pound range on the flyline. The 25 couples with the 15xnld2 for 20-70 pounders would cover pretty much everything flyline related leaving only my Tranx 300 for dorado and small yellowtail. So what line do you think is best for both my fathom 15 and 25 and what they are capable of. Thanks man
