Incredible. How musically and sensitively Mengelberg manages the accompaniment. The most imaginative orchestral playing in a Chopin concerto I've ever heard. And Cortot.............his playing, the whole performance is just plain beyond the horizon. Much thanks for posting this treasure.

the contrast frmo 31:56 then. 32:03... just amazing, makes everyone else sound like a noob at this piece despite a bit of labored fingerwork

Valeur d’archive pour deux grands noms de la musique qui en ces temps tourmentés s’étaient ostensiblement fourvoyés...et semblent très loin ici de nous donner le meilleur d’eux-mêmes.

28:18 - What the heck is that high pitched note? It almost sounds like an 'Ondes Martenot'! 😱 Did Mengelberg hire the Ghostbusters, perhaps?

Is the orchestration different in this rendition from what Chopin wrote? Sounds very different from other recordings. This is my favorite recording despite the scratch

Political idealism aside ... The fact that these very high-level performances were performed in occupied France cannot be changed. Cortot's performance in live performances is really great, and in a way it seems to be the most greasy at this time. Recording noise is unavoidable, but I feel that it is a very musical performance.

Those were the good old days, when everybody smoked, drank, ate steak, beat the Axis, and rebuilt the world. Today, nobody smokes, drinks, eats a pound of beef at a sitting, and are letting the world go to Hell. ;-)
