I can understand why you would like a guitar like that, BUT does nobody hear those strange clicksclicks e.g.the first frets on the 3rd string?? And this is not a guitar for recording, no clear,transparent sound, just a lot of ringing, the overtones not nice to the ear( recording!)
@tomgutierrez757321 сағат бұрын
I don't like so much overtone content either. A strong beginning to the note followed by good sustain is always a challenge for any maker. Maybe another choice of string would be an improvement.

I play a Kim Lissarague Spruce top lattice braced guitar and John Williams is exactly right. You have to really play with the extreme left side of the right hand to get dark tones and the middle of the finger pad to brighten it up. You can speed up learning a new guitar’s tone palette by recording or listening from 100 cm away with a mic and headphones

Definately true ! and Williams is right ! a Smallman followes you in everything you do !

One problem with some of these iconic guitars is the limited exposure most of us have. I’m a serious guitar nerd (my wife has other words), I’ve travelled the US, Canada, Spain, Germany, France playing and listening to guitars. I’ve been in dozens of the top luthiers shops, spent 2 summers with other luthiers being tutored by Jose Romanillos and his son Liam. I have heard 3 Smallmans but never played one. I have heard one Damman and got to play it. It’s sort of like how many four star Michelin restaraunts have you eaten in. My first experience with Smallman was at the GFA in San Francisco (I think it was 2008). A blind listening was held with about hundred listeners and aboutv20 guitars, some from GSI and some from the Romeros. Each guitar was played by two players. They were San Francisco conservatory players. Very good but Marcin Dylla (who won the GFA that year). The Smallman scored last of the group. A Contreras and a Romanillos tied at first. Shortly after I attended a Xeufei Yang concert. I knew she played a Smallman. She opened with Sor’s variations on a theme by Mozart. It was a fantastic performance, including the sound of the guitar. The second half of the concert she moved to South American music, not as good as the first half,…By luck a few weeks later I heard Gaelic Solar who was also playing a Smallman. I had a similar experience, the first half was great but by the end of the concert I found I wasn’t engaged, the sound was flat and uninteresting. Could this be a lack of variety in the sound? Maybe. Maybe it requires one of the best players in the world to make that instrument sound good, and even then,…. It’s hard to say but when I went back and listened to Williams recordings with his Fleta versus with hid Smallman I prefer the Fleta (although Williams recordings are generally poor quality overall, compare them to most Naxos which are much better). In order to play expressively a player needs an instrument that responds to him, or her. If the instrument is adding work to that process. I have played some good double top guitars but others tha just wanted to shout, also played traditionally built guitars that sounded great played quietly but would not go loud no matter how hard you played. Neither of those are good.

I watched this post-live and especially enjoyed the comments on different styles of guitars and how one might take their time to appreciate the characteristics of a new guitar. This is particularly pertinent to me as I took delivery today of an Andreas Kirschner Spruce doubletop. Really fun to play, and highlights all my squeaking left hand fingering on the lower strings! I'm still looking for a Redgate, so let me know if one comes your way. Cheers Peter

Eu acho que o de cedro tem o som mais bonito, mais redondo, aveludado sem ser muito estridente.... já o abeto tem o som mais espetado, agudo, que acredito que com o tempo vai melhorar, apesar de ser questão de gosto

The loudness does come across in the recording. The basses are lovely. Trebles are perhaps a little nasal for my taste. A good example of an Australian guitar where its hard to do anything but shout is Kim Lissarrague

The Brück looks like a guitar of the highest workmanship, but it sounded rather plain hearing it straight after a traditional guitar. To me there isn’t such a thing as a loud guitar as in a hall of 200+ seats its always a pretty poor listening experience (unless near the front) no matter the guitar or player. John Williams showed the way with subtle amplification - irrespective of the hall or seating position (over the many times I’ve heard him live) it’s a near CD level experience.
