Double tops aren’t usually my thing but that guitar is undeniably special.

Perfect intonation on it too. I love trad guitars but this dt is a dream for sure.

It is truly beautiful. I'm in love with it immediately. It hasn't got that typical DT sound. It has the profound (profundo) tone that Segovia loves.

What's astounding to me is that I have never heard a Dammann that sounds anything like "Russell" and I think that's such an important point: The guitarist plays such a crucial role in tone production. (When I think of Manuel, I always think of the "Ruck" Manuel.) Still, this is an extraordinary instrument. I think it suits you well, Evan. You should keep it!

If you had had this a few months ago, I might be considerably poorer. Still loving the Redgate, but this one sounds fantastic. You are really bringing out the subtle color differences in the Capricho Arabe.

Its a beautiful tone and yes you have more control on some guitars, I believe the pioneer of the double top is, Gernot Wagner who worked with Mattias Dammann. Thanks for your videos
@itstheguitarcollection2 ай бұрын
Thank you! From the information I have, Matthias built his first doubletop in 1989. I have personally seen and played one of his first doubletops that was built in 1990 (cedar strips inside). Gernot Wagner (who I mentioned in the video) didn’t built his first doubletop until the early 2000’s. In the Orfeo article on doubletops, Gernot Wagner said that Dammann implemented the bones that he suggested to him (paraphrasing), but this wasn’t until 1995 (first Dammann with Nomex). I don’t believe there is evidence that there is a Gernot Wagner doubletop (nomex, strips, sandwich top or otherwise) from before 1989.

Yes, agree. You should buy it, you seem to connect with this guitar. I do prefer the hauser II you had but just my opinion.

Thank you! The Hauser II was amazing, too. This Dammann is in fact mine, by the way (meaning, not on consignment!) :)

This guitar rivals the Hauser guitar you played a few months ago. Incredible guitar. Top 3 on this channel: Hauser, Damman, Friedrich. Forgot the years they were build.

Thank you EVAN, I know you do in depth research before stating facts. There is conflicting information out there and even from guitar performers, I think Wagner came up with the nomax But Dammann was building double tops before that but with a different system. I stand corrected, enjoy your commentary. Cheers.

@@PortlandGuitarDuo you’re so welcome!! I get things wrong too. Please know I’m not certain either! We’d have to hear this exactly from Matthias and Gernot which I’m not sure will ever happen. Undoubtedly, Gernot was a huge force in the development of the doubletop guitar.

wow sounds great. Better than some of the later Dammanns that I've heard or played. Still a little nasally sounding in the midrange to me (like a good singer with a bit of a head cold), still prefer an awesome example of a more traditional Spanish.

How do you find a 54mm nut vs. narrower nuts? I imagine it makes things plain old harder for the left hand; particularly for people with small or medium sized hands. I've mostly spent time on guitars with a 52mm nut, then recently borrowed a Dan Kellaway with a 51mm and really felt an advantage for technically difficult repertoire with more extreme stretches (e.g. the BWV 826 transcription). That said, I also would slip the 6th string off the fretboard sometimes. So perhaps wider is not necessarily harder? Also I'm really curious about what your personal everyday guitar is - you've played the best and have had so much choice available to you. Could be a cool video idea - 'Evan's favourite guitars'. Like the detail you go into these videos. Keep it up.

For someone with smaller hands, it would undoubtedly be bad, unless they were very very used to that wide of a neck. That being said (and like I said in the video) - I find the neck shape to be far more important than the width of the neck. On top of that, string spacing is also very important, and with a wide neck, you could always get a new nut made with smaller spacing.

@BehroozCompani-fk2sx2 ай бұрын
What tension are the strings? I hear that usually double top guitars are better with low tension strings.
@itstheguitarcollection2 ай бұрын
@@BehroozCompani-fk2sx the strings are D’Addario Ej45 basses, Knobloch medium tension active carbons for the g and b and normal tension Savarez New Cristal for the 1st string. I find it true that most full scale length guitars sound best with normal tension strings. True “low” tension strings, especially trebles, don’t sound very good in my opinion, and true “low” tension basses buzz too easily. You have to have your action a mile high . On this guitar, the combination of medium tension strings sounds perfect to me. The Knobloch medium tension carbons that are on the 3rd and 2nd string are less tight than any other carbon string, and that’s why I chose them for this guitar. Also, as I say in the video - I feel that speaking in generalities about double tops isn’t my cup of tea. There are so many types of double tops. Some with heavier construction in certain places and lighter construction in others. Also with -completely- different sonic goals. It would be impossible for someone to say what tension of strings sounds best on any general style of construction, in my opinion.
