No one suggests that it can outperform separates, each costing twice as much as the Atom. So he concedes that it’s a high quality one box package, then sets out to rubbish every single element because in audiophile Nerd-land, there is always something better. If you want every single part of your Headphones package to be the very best that money can buy, you buy a load of separates, spend ridiculous sums on interconnects and keep tweaking or you buy the Atom HE, curl up on the sofa and just enjoy the music.

I totally agree on the stand height being a bit too low on the Reference 1 stands. It puts the tweeter height at 34”, which is a few inches lower than ear level when seated. Mine sounded rolled off until I toed them in and tilted them back on the stands so that the tweeters were angled up a bit. So much better now. Nice review

I had a slightly different experience with the sound signatures. I felt like the anthem was a bit more clinical / possibly technically accurate. But the Arcam was more open, magical. On the Arcam I can hear subtle sounds in the background that the anthem doesn’t bring out. The anthem sounds great at loud volumes with trueHD atmos. The Arcam makes streaming of any lesser number of channels sound just as good. I don’t know what Arcam is doing but their Dolby virtualization is off the charts better than the competition.

I installed an Anthem AVM90 because my Arcam Av40 was having serious issues. I’ve been running the AVM90 for a month and my arcam came back from repair. I installed the av40 in my office and all the sudden my 5.1 in my office with old speakers sounds better than my MUCH more expensive 7.1.4 running on the AVM90. I am about ready to buy another arcam Av41 and return the Anthem. Anthem is great but it doesn’t produce as “magical” a sound when compared the Arcam. You really have to compare the two in your home and ignore the reviews. The upmixing in the Arcam is the best I’ve heard (over Sony 7000es and Anthem - soon to test marantz AV10)

"Hi John🎉, McIntosh models are analog devices except when you feed a digital signal in and then we convert to TO analog in the DAC. Taking the digital output of a DAC to feed into a McIntosh DAC would be pointless and will not work out in sound quality. The closer you get to the original digital signal file the truer will be the sound quality. We do not digitize analog signals in our two-channel, stereo models except for specific uses. These would be Room Correction and Digital EQ in the MEN220 model. Thanks again, Ron Cornelius McIntosh" Direct quote from McIntosh. I obviously cannot speak as to why you didn't hear much if any difference. I can think of many reasons why. But I think that if you couldn't hear any substantial differences between other popular and high quality options. It speaks well of the built in solution. Makes this more and more appealing option for many looking into it this amp.

@techjourney5383 I posted this mainly because I'm looking to buy this very amp and it would be a fatal flaw if I couldn't hook up a better DAC down the road. Because I whole heartely agree. If you can't hook up a great DAC to it to upgrade the sound. Or just when the included DAC gets old and doesn't suport future file formats etc. This is a fatal flaw and a no go for many people. Like yourself. But since it isn't. It changes everything. As far as why you couldn't hear differences, there is a multitude of reasons. But namely I think it is because the included DAC is very good, nuetral and transparent. And when comparing it to other Sigma Delta DAC's or FPGA style DAC's aiming for a neutral, clean sound. In the same punching class. I'm not surprised they would sound similar. Very resolving headphones like the Focal Utopia or LCD-5, or very resolving speakers. I'm sure would highlight the differences more. And I think it goes to show that having a very expensive DAC on speakers or headphones that are not up to the tast negates a lot of benefit. Which reinforces the general recommendation of not spending to much on source and make sure your back end, speakers or headphones, can keep up. Not trying to change your mind, but if that was the reason you did not like it. Might have missed out on a gem.🙃

@johnrus7661 thanks once again for the thoughtful feedback. I have since moved on to much higher performing (and expensive) gear and there is no doubt in my mind that the Mac is doing some sort of reprocessing for the analog inputs. @techjourney5383 Well, you're wrong. I'm not trying to convince you to like it. But I just quoted McIntosh directly from the email they sent me. There is no anolog to the digital conversion on the MHA150. There is multiple reasons why the difference was not obvious. I can only speculate as to why.

Cool. Makes no difference to me if a stranger on the internet disagrees with me. Just sharing my personal experience with the MHA-150 and two separate DACs running into it vs the DAC contained within the unit = all ended up sounding the same to my ears which leads me to believe everything is running through the internal DAC. Check out the last sentence in their response to you. How exactly are they applying bass boost and other sound processing features to each of the inputs? I honestly don’t care but this has been a fun conversation 😊 I sincerely hope you enjoy it as it is a great unit (in my opinion).

@braindeadmadman
@braindeadmadman 7 ай бұрын
OK, realize this is a 3 year old video I'm commenting on, but it's probably useful to point out that if you plug the digital output of a DAC into the digital input of a device, the device's DAC will always "reprocess" it using that device's DAC. So the MHA-150 "reprocessing" the signal of your other DACs is exactly what is expected. You should use the analog outputs from your other DACS to the analog inputs of the MHA-150 to avoid this.
@techjourney5383

Was the Naim NAC-N272 plugged straight into the mains .. or powered by a (Naim) external power supply unit ? Would seem not .. and if the N-272 sounds better than the Edge working off of its onboard power supply .. that is really saying something .. as it should sound way better with an XPS or XPS2 .. or a Teddy Pardo equivalent. The 272 will even work with Naim's top-end PSU (the 555PS) .. although the financial outlay mis-match would hardly make sense. Supposed to sound 'off-the-scale' good though .. and maybe worth bearing in mind if a cheap used one in good condition could be found (old/ailing PSUs can always be recapped/reconditioned). The N272 is generally considered to be in the 'best-ever' Naim club and great value for money. I have a ND5 XS2 streamer/DAC & a NAC202 preamp powered by a HiCap (ex-demo unit bought v cheaply) .. powering KEF R7s and R3 speakers via Linn LK240 monoblock power amps. Always wondered if I should have sold my (almost new at the time) ND5 XS2 and bought a N-272 that was on clearance offer (new) for £1800 (this is a couple of years ago). My NAC202 & HiCap are old now (recently checked serial numbers with Naim .. 2011 & 2003 respectively .. need re-capping, especially the HiCap - very old. My Linn power amps also old (I used to use a [very good] Creek 100A integrated). Am looking out for a 2nd hand Arcam P49 power amp (A+B speaker capability) .. was Arcam's top power amp when it came out in 2015 or so. Good ones can be had for a grand or so now. PS. Sorry for droning on endlessly !

In fact, I love it so much that I purchased a second one but was surprised to find that I don’t love it as much in the second setup. I suspect it may be related to the fact that the first TP XPS that I have has a synergistic research purple fuse installed so I’m probably going to buy a second one of those to (hopefully) confirm my suspicion. N272 really is a special sounding and functioning device especially at used prices.

Oh well, at least we know both units work well with at least 4 different types of headphones. Weird that the Sony is heralded by yourself as the superior listening experience but the Sennheiser provides the best solution for DAC to headphone without any software interference in between. I could not understand if you connected the Unity to the PMA-110, so to use its quad dac configuration, or else … also, would you recommend the Cambridge CXN V2 instead of the Unity, as input streamer to the PMA-110? I tried the direct digital (USB) connectivity from my MacBook into the DAC of the PMA-110 but was not impressed of the output with both my Sennheiser 6xx and Beyerdynamic DT880 600 Ohms edition. Maybe I am also not using the right headphones?

Hi, I think the PMA-A110 is a fantastic integrated amplifier for some speaker pairings but a “good” headphone amplifier. I found that it paired well with my Senn HD650’s but I much prefer my other gear for headphone listening: Sennheiser HDV820 + Meze Empyrean with an old Parasound D/AC 1600 or Chord Qutest DAC. To directly answer one of your other questions…I did not connect the Uniti Atom HE directly to the Denon. I view the PMA-A110 as an excellent speaker amp (with the right speakers) and the Uniti Atom as a great headphone amp.
