I joined the Mississauga cycling club in 1972, at age 12. Our president was a fine British gentleman named Eric Watson. He rode a racing orange Holdsworth, all Campagnolo except for the centre- pull brakes, which Eric had cuatomized by drilling a hole in his cinelli stem, and using the stem as a stopper for the front brake cable. I thought it was the coolest modification ever, and i did likewise with many road bikes since. Even doing the same trick with the seatpost. I just rode a 1979 Panasonic, with some modifications, on an 1800 km tour. No problems at all with the bike. I don't know why bikes have to be over-thought, over- designed and changed every year when the 70's bikes had everything figured out. It just comes down to geometry and type of tires. I wish more people knew how to keep the old, well made bikes restored and ready for the road. Nice job !

Helps me to work on renovating my bike from my teenage years. A Youngs frame bought in 1963, ridden for tens of thousands of miles and raced over a ten year period then stored half a century. Gearing compared to today's bikes is laughable - 53/45 x 6 (12 to 21)... how the heck did I climb the hills of Kent, Surrey and Sussex?

Loved the actual renovation part. Covered a lot in a short space of time; very useful. In my opinion the ride part needs to be chopped down to two minutes or less. Very trusting to ride without a helmet on the roads.

Weinmann brakes. Seriously!? Keeping this junk after putting so much effort into the rest of the bike? BTW, the paint looked better before.

Thanks for doing this video. I am currently converting a 1970s HARRY QUIN. It was handy to see a modern cassette working on the rear axle. I had to stretch my stays to allow for the extra 5mm. I gritted my teeth and heaved a little. It worked without breaking anything. They were exceedingly hard to bend, even a tiny bit, which is rather comforting. I haven’t ordered the wheels yet, and still awaiting the paint.

Nice restoration bro! Just wanna ask, what size is that fork? I'm interested in building a classic fixie bike too and I don't really want to have such a huge clearance in my front if I build it.

I am surprised you can have that tyre clearance. Very nice fork dropouts, and I am digging the bars too. My only complaint is the combo MKS pedals/straps. There is nothing better if you want to ride your bike in the velodrome, but they're not practical on the road. Not to mention they completely destroy your shoes.

If you care a lot - take a 2 pieces of thin leather and stitch them around toeclips nose part. Im personally using double belt toeclips, and it's so fast to catch them actually, most of the time (regular rides, not racing) I'm faster put leg in them than my friends with road clipless pedals (easy to hear when they click it in

Fantastic!!!! Master craftsman at work. Watched it right to the end. I am working on a U08. Nice to know what can be done. Like how you set the front brake to go from the left handgrip directly to the brake and the rear brake from the right hand grip into the top tube then out to the rear brake. What shifters did you install? What cables did you use - brakes / gears? What seat is installed? Brake pads? Thanks
