Looking at the images it makes me wonder whether they could have maintained control of the aircraft if they would have lowered the wing tips to use them as makeshift vertical stabilizers.

My grandfather, Victor Horton, was a NASA test pilot and engineer in the Edwards Pilot's Office when this happened. He knew the men in the crash and was involved in the search and recovery operations. According to my mother, he took her on outings near the crash sites for both this and the #3 X-15 for years afterwards, ostensibly to look for "arrowheads," but he was actually looking for crash debris, in case they missed something important the first time around.

There is evidence that because of the G forces initiated by the spin, the second pilot was not able to get his seat in position to enable the capsule to eject. He had many seconds to see the end coming, with no recourse. RIP.
@thetoolmat86324 жыл бұрын
There was a manual encapsulation mode and a powered encapsulation mode for ejection (encapsulation was the tilting of the seat back and a protective shield/bubble lowered prior to eject, also required putting feet on inside the encap along with stowing the control column away from the one wanting to eject, probably hard to do if fighting to control the aircraft).....see XB 70 interior pics and note dash writing explaining the 2 features.. Pilot said he could see co-pilot head banging back and fourth, the pilot couldn't get his own protective shield down for some time after wanting to eject, his arm got stuck in the way. Eventually he just pulled the eject handle...note the ejection methods, do a screen shot then enlarge so you can read better... You can also do the same thing, reading the side of the seats...the rescuers instructions on how to open the bubble/shield. .. an excerpt from the official report Al White’s ejection capsule landed a few thousand feet away from the XB-70. Major Cross didn’t make it out of the XB-70. Al White made it but had to be removed from the capsule and flown to the Edwards Hospital where he stayed a few days to recover from bruises and a back injury. His butt had made a perfect impression in the metal seat of the capsule. It was later learned from Al what a tragedy he had gone through. His story began when he first felt the impact of Walker’s plane roll into the vertical stabilizers. His immediate reaction was to get his seat into the escape capsule. This was accomplished in a matter of seconds, as training for the escape had become a routine reaction. In closing the clam he had accidentally tucked his fist in the hollow of his armpit and his elbow was protruding in the path of the clamshell closure. It was tight quarters and he struggled to free his arm from the weight of the clam hood. He saw that Major Cross was still leaning forward in his seat at the controls. The G forces were so high from the spin of the aircraft he was unable to move. Something was wrong with his seat. It had not moved back to his capsule. He had waited too long, and the G forces had built up beyond the operational ability of the seat retraction mechanism. [It was later learned that diaphragm in the seat retraction cylinder had ruptured under high loads created from the G forces of the aircraft spin; this could have been eight times its normal operating range; Cross had waited to long.] What can I do for this guy was all Al could think of for a few moments. The G loads from the spin were building up fast. White knew he could not get to Major Cross to help him and if he could not get his elbow into the capsule he would lose his arm in the ejection of the seat. During these moments the Bomber had lost approximately 10,000 ft altitude. Forcing his closed hand out of the armpit, he struggled and finally freed his arm with little time left to hit the ejection switch. The clamshell closed hard from the power of the thrust as it lifted from the aircraft. [NO signal came through the telemetry system to indicate Al's seat was the one that left, confusion lead to believe Cross-had made it out.]. Al's mind was in a flurry, his thoughts were on Cross and his own chances of being hit by the debris. He lost memory of the capsule procedure to deploy the air bag under the capsule. This cost him his hard bounce off the ground. The bottom of the capsule was equipped with an air bag (something like that in a car) and it needed to be energized by the occupant to be inflated to reduce the impact when the capsule hit the ground.
@barrysullins48398 жыл бұрын
You would have thought Major Walker would have known about vortex. Too close and just enough to the rear to allow the huge XB-70s right counter-clockwise vortex to spin him into the bomber.

Still doesn't make sense why the F-104 tucked itself up under the Valkrie's wing like that. Almost like he got sucked under. Then after his tail got knocked off it violently pitched up and landed upside down on the XB-70 and slid across its back and sheared both vertical stabilizers off. and broke apart bursting into flame. The XB pilot said all he heard or felt was a small bump. No vibration or anything. Moments later it went into a spin. Strange accident.
@andrewwilkey61958 жыл бұрын
because of where he was in the formation and how far back the f104 wings are plus the fact that the wing of the x70 was behind him he probably didn't realize how close he was to the x70. then when the 104 hit the x70 his wing hit the bottom of the x70. instictually he probably then pulld back on the stick to break away from the formation however his wing being under the x70 would cause the 104 to pivot around the contact point leading the 104 landing on the back of the x70. thats my guess but no one really knows and the x70 went into a spin because it had no lateral stability, just like a helicopter with no tail rotor.

One of my favorite airplanes. And it's not only because it ranks among the coolest looking/most beautiful aircraft ever built. It's because while it had a top speed comparable to the SR-71, the infamous Cold War spy plane (whose solution to missile evasion was literally "outrun them all"), it was almost closer in size to a B-52, the largest U.S. bomber ever in service. Looking at it alone, it's very difficult to get a sense of scale, so here's a picture of it sitting next to an SR-71, complete with cutesy sound bubbles. s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/a7/58/90/a758906351690239948b6341ce54b162.jpg
