Very nice photos, a few of which I had never seen before. I am an admirer of this truly unique aircraft. If I may make a suggestion, I don't think there could have been a less fitting song to go along with this video. When I see a photo montage featuring a Soviet-bred Cold War symbol that had a sad and unsuccessful fate, I don't want to hear a modern, Hollywood action-movie soundtrack to go with it.

the tu 144 is an icon in aircraft design. its design was ahead of its time. unfortunately the plane was stopped after the tragic accident in the paris air show in 1973. if it would have survived it would have had a great influence on the aircraft industry. geopolitically it would have had an influence on the events in the ussr. this plane would have brought the west and the east of the ussr nearer with unforeseeable consequences.

well i agree with qwertdr that the concorde was nice to fly in because i have had the chance to fly on one i was seated at the front where it probably was quieter i was told that at the rear it could be loud maybe at takeoff i travelled to tahiti on the concorde from toronto with stops in vancouver and honolulu this was part of a special package that i thought was at a really good price because the concorde had to go there to get a group of people

That's interesting, because as I understand it, the Concorde was banned from flight over land due to the force of the sonic boom... yet the route you describe takes the Concorde over a good chunk of the northern US.

im not pointing directly at the tupolev, to be honest i was talking about both the planes, yet there is to argue about whether it did revoloutinize or not, since it was faster than the concorde it did happen to do something different. and correct me if im wrong, really do. but i dont recall any major failures within the tupolev resulting in a loss of many lives.

Concorde was the most-tested aircraft at that time,with more than 8,000 symulated cycles of take-off/cruise/landing. Tu-144D was at least as fast as Concorde,but safety was not very high.

OH AND BY THE WAY - It was a French Mirage jet trying to photograph the TU144 canards that caused it to crash. But by making the TU144 take evasive action it unintentionally showed up the flaws in the airframe design (no research/development).

Both planes -- the Concorde and Tu-144 -- are an amazing testament of science, technology, engineering, and aesthetics. The idiots who blast the Russians' supersonic contribution to the world of flight are ignoramuses limited by their nationalistic biases/lenses. The Tu-144 is a beautiful machine with an awesome menacing almost "Transformer" look about it. It's a late '60s big block all business Mustang, while the Concorde is akin to a sleek late model import. It comes down to what one prefers.

@theoldgalah First of all the plane fell apart in the airshow because the plane went on a 90 degree nose dive suddenly when a mirage came close to it flying over so it pitched 90 degrees down and the crew where trying to pull it up but the plane couldn't take it but if you think that their material was bad then how do you explain the fact that it was faster than the Concorde? ?

Well, I must say it's a really nice plane . I just don't know why everytime I see it lands is a time when I see a bouncing landing . Concorde 's performance seems nicer , but this plane is undeniably on the same rank of Concorde for beauty , technology , science and engineering .

@ascalia Well they built the tu-144 in a hurry because while concorde was being already shown to the public the soviets where working 25/8 to get the plane and how do you know its cramped? it was bigger than the concorde! and the concorde could carry from 90-100 where as the tu-144 could carry 114 i think and about the crash the first crash happened due to the fact tht a french mirage came over the top of the plane and the pilot to avoid it put the yoke down but the plane vent down and crashed

What's not been mentioned is that TWO other Tu-144's crashed (not counting the Paris crash caused by a Mirage). These were on "mail runs". Both crashed in same month (May) and they were pulled from service after this. You can read about these crashes if you google it. Bottom line - they were unsafe.

Apparently some of the key structural specs were not correct and with a few flights metal fatigue had started to set in and when the crew had to do the radical maneuvers the plane as you already said couldn't take it and fell apart. The specs must have been close but not quite right otherwise the Russian engineers would have picked it up. A shame actually and apparently the crew were good blokes.....

it was faster than the Concorde but on the rest i would agree still it is like a Lamborghini coutach it is beautiful and even if it has problems you put that aside and plus people where still learning at the time it was a time when no computers existed and dont forget unfortunately the soviets made the tu-144 in hurry as a response to the west but personally if i wanted to be safe i would fly in the concorde if i wanted to hear the sound of the engines while i fly i would fly in the tu-144

@FSXairpilot Compared to the TU-144, the Concorde was a huge success. In service for 27 years, the Concorde suffered only one fatal crash. This was due to debris on the runway, not any failing of the aircraft. Once again, the TU-144 was pulled from service after only 55 scheduled passenger flights. If you're posting a tribute, fine. But I also have the right to post information here. If you don't like it, then YOU leave.

Exactly. It had MAJOR FAILURES. A direct result of what we call pirating these days. The copy is never as good as the original. I'm an Engineer (have been for 35yrs) I KNOW if you try to copy someone elses design, it doesn't work. It is simple, you don't understand the process that got you to the point of a specific shape or design. What may seem trivial and a small change can be catastrophic because you didn't do the research or testing. That's what happened with TU144.

Actually the plane fall apart because known soviet industrial spies were fed disinformation and though the plane was built properly the materials used were not to the right specs thus it fell out of the sky taking with it several skilled and innocent pilots and flight and aeronautical engineers.. It didn't fall apart on its first flight but at the Paris airshow if memory serves me ok I read this somewhere in a readers digest or something similar so whether thats true I don't know

yeah but i think concorde and Tu-144 are quite different in many ways.....significant design diffferences . but i think Tu-144 did the first successful flight....so it still remains the first supersonic transport plane. though concorde was more reliable.... but i find tu-144 much more attractive .... damn it looks like a falcon...it looks are a magnified fighter jet.

no it want concorde was built before but it didnt go into flight early but the russians they made the plane in a hurry that is why it was out of service right away and they couldn't solve most problems most of all the flight range and they crashed because a mirage flew overhead to get a snap of the forward wings but when the pilot saw the mirage they where too close and he thought they where gonna collide so he piched the nose down and unfortunatly the plane wet in an unrecoverable dive

The TU-144 was a complete failure. The engines alone were flops. Clumsy and inefficient turbofan engines were unable to achieve and maintain Mach 2 cruising speed. Afterburners were thus required. This greatly reduced flight range to about 1,600 miles. After 55 scheduled passenger flights, the TU-144 was withdrawn from service.

If an engine went down it WOULD cause a vacuum (not when they were ok), Soviets figured that out. It was one of the main reasons the plane was taken out of service. I never said it was the cause of the Paris crash. It was supposed to be faster (calculations - never actually did go faster), yes it was bigger, fail to see what that has to do with anything. Ingenious creations ??? Like what? don't say canards. They were only added because it was unstable at landing/take-off speeds-bad wing design.

So just how many crashed, broke up.....disappeared? (yes I agree the French caused the Airshow crash). Why did they only fly 55 scheduled flights with passengers and get grounded after an additional 70+ "mail delivery" flights. Why were all soviet pilots shit scared to fly it? The engines close together did not coz crash in Paris BUT CCCP knew what the consequences would be if it ever happened. It had 2 many problems, that's why it got quietly dropped. It's all well documented now, easy to find.

Yes. I don't know what age you are BUT I lived through it. It was a STICH UP as usual by the USA. Tell other countries what harm it might do etc then once 2 or 3 countries (with no brains but a big hand waiting for a pay day) then we will ban it too. God I am sick of reading the shit people write about this plane. The Soviets stole the plans for years and built a copy. But without doing there own testing and development they totally screwed up. They took Concorde design put their own engines on it too close together (mistake) one fails, vacuum so ALL fail. Altered wing shape so landing speed too fast - it crashed. Added canards so it wouldn't stall at low speeds. It was total crap. Scrapheap challenge stuff.
