I think if you want a neutral starting point colorwise, using a color checker to calibrate the colors in your photos is a much better option than trying to hunt down an older camera. I've started doing this my self and it's made a huge difference. Colors are much more vibrant after calibration, and it's fixed a few technical issuess like blues tend to be less saturated for my camera. Newer sensors are going to have less noise, more resolution, and more dynamic range, which is a bigger advantage. Any differences in color response can be dealt with in software.

The D300s model foes have a video mode, but to my understanding it is quite garbage in comparison to what modern DSLR mirrorless can produce today. I honestly think you'll be better off with your phone than a D300. If video is a really high priority, if you can swig a Z50 or a Z30 both of those are great cameras with excellent video capability. The D5000 series cameras are worth a look too.

CCDs shine in portraits most of all. And almost older the CCDs the better - the best portraits I ever did is with Canon G10, G11 with newer CCD portraits were not as... I can't describe it other than "organic", "alive"? It has something to do with how it treats grain and color gradients, how the picture is almost dithered in a way, giving it a kind of paradoxical "sharp softness" which is especially well suited for portraits.

There are those that say, if you don't shoot with a film camera, it is no photography. Others say, that any manipulation, even cropping is not allowed. AI generated images is not photography. I mostly do wildlife and some flowers, abstract and landscape. I do it to create artistic images, not editorial or documentary images. AI has its place, but yes it is being abused far too much.

Thanks for the kind words and good points mate! Photography is the process of capturing light and I definitely didn’t haha. When you use AI to generate a “photo” and you intentionally want your generation to look “photographic” and not “painterly” using the term “photo” in your prompt seems to be key from my experience, so I’ve gotten use to saying photo, but I see your point, because it’s technically not. Intuitively I would use "image" for everything that is not (or not based) on a photograph in its original sense (I'll second your notion that we should not erode the meaning of "photography"). The issue with Darktable isn't that it lacks features, it's that Darktable takes more time to develop photos, is far less intuitive in use, there is no structure or order you can just edit in and get, you kind of have to jump around. Also in LR you pretty much didn't edit the photo, so it would be expected it won't be to your taste if you barely touched it as opposed to Darktable. Also while both DT and LR won't address your issues with the programs, if you try get issue noticed in DT you will get informed that you're wrong, and stupid, and how dare you expect functionality from free software, which isn't really the case, as people I saw posting issues were approaching it from perspective of wanting this project to grow, and be more accessible to people in general, often people who won't read 300 page manual for photo editing software before first use. Did I mention just how painful it is to synchronize settings for multiple photos for the pictures? XD

There is a way that almost all youtubers and bloggers don't put up or don't realize. You can get perfect result from raw files. Here is how. 1) process your raw file like you normally do and save it as jpg fileA 2) go back to the raw file and reprocess it with different values and save it as jpg fileB. Repeat this process several times with different values. Some times you wish you lightened up some spots or darken up another spot or some place more red and other place more green etc etc etc. Save each iteration as a different jpg file. After go to Photoshop and load up these jpg files into stack and ask photoshop to blend it all.

I have been following Darktable since they began. One thing I seriously can't stand about open source software is that while technologically they're good but UI/UX absolutely suck. Perfect representation of nerds building stuff as shown in popular media. Darktable is powerful but my god the UI/UX is so bad and after all these years, still is as bad as when they began. and another severely lacking thing is that there are no good resources to learn it.

I think when I started using DT I also felt that the interface needed work, but not that I’ve have grown so comfortable with it, I actually really like the way it’s setup. With your resources to learn it comment, I noticed something kinda similar. There are either good videos on advanced techniques or videos on specific modules, but not a lot of videos on how to put it all together into a cohesive workflow, so my intention has been to fill that gap.

@@deepskypics appreciate your work. But DT has way too many modules and some which I feel do the same job. The problem with open source software is that since they're not after the money, they really don't care about UI/UX. Of course it's not all software, so many great open source software which look good as well. As a professional photographer I don't have the time to learn DT and adapt my workflow to it. LR and Capture One Pro and all other commercial softwares are easy to use. I want to get work done rather than learning how to use the software. It's just clunky to use. How can "more vibrant" be "more natural", I think there isa confusion if not a contradiction here. PS" what are "organic" colours?
@deepskypics
@deepskypics 21 күн бұрын
Vibrant can sometimes be more natural if vibrancy exists within the natural scene. Have you ever found that your camera rendered colors less vibrant than you remembered them, it’s one way to communicate that to your viewer. There’s of course the issue with human visual memory but that’s a separate issue
@BrunoChalifour
@BrunoChalifour 21 күн бұрын
@@deepskypics Vibrant yes ;o) but "more vibrant" not a little excessive for "natural"? Not mentioning the fact here that you never spoke of colour accuracy in the video whether in natural or artificial scenes, even in your comparison of CCD and CMOS sensors. To answer your question, the tendency of most cameras, a perfect heritage to what already happened with film (remember Fuji's Velvia), is to produce JPG images with increased saturation and contrast for "pop", (artificial) "impact." Badly-processed film, or old film or film that had been exposed to excessive heat could actually render colours less vibrant than what they were in front of the camera. Fortunately this is a thing of the past with digital cameras. As a result the first thing I have been doing for years with most new cameras (except the Leica M240 (not the case with the Qs, M10s and M11s whose saturation is very slightly increased, and Hasselblad) is to set saturation and contrast of JPGs down at -1. So far I have never used a camera that, out of the box with its default settings, has given me a less "vibrant" image than "the reality of the scene" in front of the lens. The good thing with digital cameras is that even if someone's memory is "an issue," i.e. failing, it is easy to check the back of one's camera just after taking the image and get some idea. It is also always easy to check one's camera and its colour rendition at home, with colourful items or even better, a colour chart, and compare. No memory needed. And by the way what about "organic colours"? How do you define that? Now, as far as my photographing is concerned I just wish for a camera that gives me accurate colours then I can always modify them, boost them either with a polarising filter for instance (good for increasing saturation and contrast), or in an image-processing software. The opposite, getting accurate colours ("accurate" in comparison to what they were "in the natural world") from images whose saturation and contrast have been massaged one notch up by the camera's software can be problematic, all the more so, as you pointed out, if one completely relies on one's memory... which is an issue indeed. So I think the right question should be which sensor / camera renders colours the more / most accurately This would actually speak of the precision and excellence of the colour science at play.

Capture one pro still for me. DT is excellent but its a very very detailed and very technical learning curve. I've used and still have the app and I go to it when i need some quickies done if I'm not using affinity photo. But dark table does unlock potentials for those that hate subscription nonsense like Adobe and with what they got going on now, people are leaving them. That and those that simply can never afford $300 for Capture one pro or more to say don't want to pay the price. Darktable is freakin awesome.... but it will never beat the process of the other apps like C1P which is my primary for bulk editing, affinity photo for my single photo work and XnView MP for my on location quick tag work

I use C1Pro as well. Just so superior than LR. Darktable's UI/UX is just a mess. That's a huge drawback of many open source software. Even C1Pro has gone subscription route but at least they offer a full purchase. For my work, it's more than enough and not every new feature is required. I would however like them to just release updates to read newer camera support so even if I am using an older version of C1, I can continue using it with newer cameras.
