Ah yes - the part where you have to tow the boat against the current by hand standing shoulder deep - I almost felt that 😆 Been there, done that as they say. Also a good idea with the starter cable connections, mine has the same problem of slow start, will check them now. As for the outdrive - better to buy used I guess, a used alpha one gen 2 can be anything from $600 to $1200
@brianbluemkejr

100% check the terminals, good starting point for diagnosing the issue. Wish I did that myself and could’ve saved a few hundred dollars and a couple hours in the sun fixing it lol. @@brianbluemkejr it all depends on your plans for the boat I guess. If you are going to keep it - the new outdrive is definitely worth it. If you are going to fix\enjoy\sell\move on, than a used one seems more reasonable. Also, to make further boating less frustrating think on installing a small transom and a kicker motor, like a 6-9.9 hp outboard. That way you won't need towing at least. It's also fun to cruise on it and save some gas\enjoy low noise.
@brianbluemkejr

lol this has been on my mind for awhile now… I for sure need one. And ya I think the end goal is it fix/use/sell before summer ends. Just need to get her 100% first. Just found someone with a new mercruiser out drive for sale on market place for 1200$. Said he put it on his boat then the engine blew, only has like 5hrs max on it. Gear ratio is 1.47 too which will be perfect for this boat. Trying to set up a date to go snag it soon, located in NY.
@andreireal9158
@andreireal9158 11 күн бұрын
@@brianbluemkejr wow, the price is really sweet! not so sure about 1.47 ratio though. That number sounds way too low, like for a diesel engine with low rpm and high torque. The petrol alphas usually come in 1.64-1.85-1.92. Dunno, ask where he got it and if it was from\for a diesel, that's probably how he blew the motor (with excessive load) and the same might happen to yours.

So he had it on a 350 V8. Everything I saw online showed typically V8s run 1.47 or 1.32, v6 run 1.65 or 1.85 and 4 cylinders run 1.98. What would you recommend running on it?

Awesome, Brian! One of the moments I have been waiting for in this series. Can't wait to see what else you do. And hopefully, new battery and alternator will finish the mechanical portion of the job. She's a beauty, and it looks like she rolls through the water nicely too. I really like that boat. I'd love to see you take that dash0board apart, and give it some love. New guages, etc. But that's just the boater nerd in me. It's a killer boat! And you have done an amazing job on it. I know you have to stop somewhere.

Congrats on the first launch, the happiest moment in every boat project! Hard shifting could be the mercruiser shift interrupt switch not working. It's a little switch near the shift cable linkage, that kills the motor whenever you go in forward or reverse gear, making it easy on the lever, cable and gearcase. Check if it is pressed while shifting and the motor dies when so. Also noticed you switched from sitting to standing while behind the helm - same with mine boat, standing gives much better view and control. But on a full cruising day where you go like for 3-5 hrs it sucks, heared there are cushions for this type of seats to make standing more comfortable. If steering is hard and requires 2 hands, check the steering cable, also torq steering and prop walk on mine on low speed is pretty annoying. In the end, having over 300 hrs of runtime with similar boat I found out, that the passengers enjoy it much more than the captain, so driving this thing is kinda like work for me and fun for them)
@brianbluemkejr
@brianbluemkejr 28 күн бұрын
thank you! yes it was a long time coming lol. You got me questioning the shift interrupt switch... don't recall seeing one but it for sure doesn't kill the engine when I shift. I'll have to look into that and follow back up. It almost felt more like it was jammed little bit? I'll have to pop the engine cover and take a look when in the water next time. Steering is little tight but it's more so just difficult to turn when standing just because of the angle of it all. Got a steering knob in the mail so that'll fix it. I have a bunch of new parts going in now, next video will be out soon!
@andreireal9158
@andreireal9158 28 күн бұрын
@@brianbluemkejr that switch is in the motor hatch, where the shifting cable is connected to a plastic assembly, near the spring loaded rod, standard on every mercruiser i\o drives. On mine the switch itself was disconnected, it was clicking and working but did not kill the engine as it should. When reconnected, the shifting became smooth and easy, like on outboards.

The teak hatch played really nice! I need to upgrade mine, never thought on making it grated, but now that's a nice alternative to a carpet cover or a solid plywood piece. Also the carpet inside the wet storage compartment really added some "civility" to this otherwise unpleasant place) The floor on the closeup looks so-so...I'd consider returning the carpet back, or covering with faux teak.

Also hate the roller gelcoating part - the first layers always look like crap, in contrast to auto paints spraying with compressor/hvlp, where the results look near pefect right from the start. And to get the desired quality you have to sand a lot. But the good part about the floor is that ypu can always cover it back with carpet or fake teak.

So I applied tape to the back side of the hole (from inside where the motors at), then I mixed up some fiberglass resin with fiberglass chop strand to make a thick putty like mixture.
