Is the corrugation consistent from one to another? Asking because if one was to make a form for cement pour could one pattern be made to be used with different containers or are some corrugations different than others?
@liveinacontainer6602
@liveinacontainer6602 9 күн бұрын
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has standardized the dimensions of most shipping containers. While I cannot claim to know that all containers share the same corrugation dimensions, it is very likely that most will share the same dimensional properties. To be safe, you might should pour the concrete based upon each shipping container profile you work with though. I am not fully understanding why you want to make a form for cement pour. What would the end result be used for?

fifteen years ago I got engineering on containers we used for studios. I brought them to my ranch. Now the code enforcement wants "As built" and "engineering" on these containers. I use the containers as "equipment" . Sometimes wind breaks, sometimes storage. Sometimes as a privacy buffer/ fence. Is there any grandfather clauses or solutions or do I get rid of 15 containers that have holes in them? I have looked at 1604.5
@liveinacontainer6602
@liveinacontainer6602 Ай бұрын
Most municipalities have not adopted the most recently written codes yet. If you were able to use your containers on your property already without any code related issues, then you probably still have the grandfather clause in affect. All municipals are a little different as to what they require though. So, if in question, it is best to check with them.

I found this video that is similar to the install you did to the interior metal walls of the container. www.reflectixinc.com/tutorials-and-videos/garage-doors/ . The heat inside the container will be reflected back within the space. Maybe consider cutting some edges to provide an air space between the sheets of reflectix per the video. I don't anticipate that this will help much with reducing the heat that is contained in the space though. But, it might help reduce the possibility of condensation from building up behind the reflectix - given that there is some air movement. Check out the videos on this channel about insulation and rain screens for more ideas to consider. Good luck and let me know what you find out that works for you.

Spray on insulation is sprayed on the outside of your shipping container with panels to hold it in place and give the container a modern look
@liveinacontainer6602
@liveinacontainer6602 6 ай бұрын
Spray on insulation will attach to whatever it is sprayed upon. It does not need anything to hold it in place. The gypsum board (is that what you mean by "panels?") is placed over the spray on insulation to protect the insulation from being damaged and protect the occupants from the flammable properties of the insulation.

The insulation should be covered against excessive UV exposure. Check with the product manufacturer's recommendations. But, generally, spray foam will deteriorate if left exposed too long to the sunlight (prolonged UV exposure). Carlisle is one of many companies that provide insulation products. Here is a white sheet from them...www.carlislesfi.com/wp-content/uploads/LTR-CSFI-UV-Closed-Cell-Foam.pdf

Love your video's! We have just been shocked by the Building Inspector who denoted we need r7.5 continuous insulation on external of corrugate and other adjoining locations for our five container hybrid build. 1/3 of siding and all windows, doors, brickmold and flashing have been installed and metal cut for remaining. The GC is now awol and we have been left hanging days before the snow flies. Town will declare 3 season if we don't do it which will make us homeless. After COVID wiped our business out, bank was allowed to refuse mortgage renewal after 23 years of spotless payments due to no financials for two years. Had to sell and rebuild from proceeds and was conned by a company and person who is in the container market. This is all potentially devastating. We have a national housing crisis in Canada for many reasons. This is one example. More to the point. We are looking at specialized product like InSoFast CX 44 and regular rigid board. Affixing to container without punching holes is important. Entire internal is spray foamed as are external joins and junctions (except for carport storage contain which is partially done to cover off mudroom). Any advise. Your sure know what you are doing.

Please check them out out at the following play list: kzbin.info/aero/PLrl5-w_7fqcmqYbQank-jBrh8OYT20zGL Be sure to protect the insulation from the sun and other elements by installing a "rain screen" in front of it while allowing the water to escape from behind the rain screen. Very informative, thanks. Quick question: have you heard of people building basements out of containers? is there a way to do the 3rd kind of foundation on the underground and then partially burying the basement? Does it make sense even to bury steel strutures like containers? My 'dream' would be 3 flors (the third: under the roof) and a basement which is not totally under the ground (to have big enough windows. 4 rows of 5 or six 40ft containers on top of each other in total. (I write from Germany, greetings and thanks)
@liveinacontainer6602
@liveinacontainer6602 8 ай бұрын
Good question. I am not very confident that the shipping container would be the best structure for partial or fully under ground construction. While they are designed to support lateral loads at sea, they are not designed to withstand large amounts of horizontal loads directly onto the siding. Soil has a way of imposing lateral forces that would be better supported with reinforced concrete or reinforced concrete masonry units as foundation walls. Check with a structural engineer (and maybe a civil engineer) to get more in depth information about soil loads and how to build under ground.

Thanks for this. Our container will be primarily used for storage (zone 5 northeast AZ). Living space(s) will be eslewwhere on our property. That said I still want some insulation and am likely going with the flat boards I can glue on. Easy, no frame needed. @liveinacontainer6602

I am not fully understanding what you want to do with the flat boards that you can glue. I am familiar with gluing flat board edge to edge (with butt joints) to build interior furniture. But, not sure what you want to do with it on the outside of the building. Lab joints with exterior siding would be much better of a water protector than butt jointed siding.

How well insulated is a reefer container, refrigerator container. Here in New Zealand I can buy a 40ft high cube for $6000 or a 40ft high cube reefer for $10000. To me a reefer makes more sense but whats your thoughts on the insulation on the reefers
@liveinacontainer6602
@liveinacontainer6602 9 ай бұрын
Reefers usually have 10 to 12 cm of polyurethane insulation along the exterior walls. That will yield around 25 to 30 R-Value. If you used a standard container and you wanted to install the same amount of insulation for a 30 R-value, you can achieve that by installing 4.5 inches of closed cell spray on insulation. This will need to be installed in layers. If you used a reefer, please be careful with the insulation becoming air-born when cutting openings in the walls. You do not want to breath the friable insulation. It will also be more expensive to cut opening in reefer's exterior walls (labor and tools needed). So, with this information, check to see what the cost of closed cell spray on insulation is and compare that additional cost to a standard container to the cost of a reefer (and the additional labor and tools needed). The R-value of the polyurethane in a reefer is about the same as the R-value of closed cell spray on insulation Both are approximately 6.5 R-value per inch. (Check my information to be sure that it is still correct with the products in your market).

Interesting idea. Aircrete would add to the insulation to the home. It can become brittle and crack. Shipping containers do move a bit with lateral forces, so it would need to be installed so that compression would not damage the surfaces. There are probably other considerations about using Aircrete that I am not thinking about right now too.

I have a couple of containers I'm about to turn into sleepouts. Spray foam is very expensive here in NZ. My current plan after much thinking is to seal a 250micron polyethylene film to the inside of the container. Then timber frame with glasswool batts. Then a tyvek/polyethylene wrap before drywall. If the moist air can't get to to metal it should work ok. Your thoughts?
@liveinacontainer6602

Be sure not to trap moisture against the inside face of the metal wall of the container with the 250 micron polyethylene film. I have always used tyvek on the outside face of my buildings. Maybe you are concerned that there is more moisture inside the container than outside and that is why you are proposing to put the tyvek on the inside wall.
