Hi there! GIY means Green-It-Yourself. It’s a term I came up with that means making “greener versions of cleaning or body products without harsh or potentially harmful ingredients. My definition of green harkens back to my mom’s advice: Leave the place better than you found it. The places we’re leaving better are our earth, our homes, and ourselves.

It's great to have more options to use natural ingredients in our daily lives. The new idea you provided to use baking soda in the laundry for the towels to remove smells is one I will be using now. I also use baking soda when making hardboiled eggs. I put a tablespoon in the water with the eggs to make it easy to remove eggshells quickly later on.

Hi Lisa, sorry but my question is unrelated to this video topic however I noticed you made this video recently so I felt better commenting on this one in particular. My question is about your Sals Suds product in particular. I am looking to transition to a better way to clean my laundry as for some reason after I turned 50 my skin is super sensitive to everything now. I’ve looked into making my own washing detergents, and after some research I think I have narrowed my options to castile soaps and Sals Suds. But I am alittle confused on using castile soaps in laundry due to them being soaps and not detergents. So that’s where Sals Suds comes into play for me. My question is however what is the difference between the concentrated mild version of Sals Suds and the regular pine scented one? Do they both smell of pine? And should one exclusively be used for laundry over the other? I can’t seem to find the concentrated mild formula in the gallon size. Wasn’t sure if buying the gallon size of the pine scented formula could be used on laundry as well. The idea of my clothes smelling of pine isn’t particularly appealing though I’d admit. Could you please enlighten me on this. I’d appreciate it greatly. Thank you.

Thanks for the easy tip. I stumbled upon this video while trying to find a solution to living in a condo where the building's water is OVERLY softened. I can't stand washing myself and not being able to feel like I've rinsed the soap off. It's like an oily residue remains on my skin, whereas I'd prefer a squeeky clean. I've used purified drinking water to rinse my hands off and that does well. Sometimes the water comes out of my tap very cloudy from whatever treatment they are using. So, question: Is there any way to counteract the softener once it is already in the water? Or, will I have to make a trip to the mountain cabin to bathe each time? The pure natural water there is superb.
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 14 күн бұрын
Hi Sheldon - Very interesting question! I am not a fan of softened water, for the reasons you mentioned. Before your question, I had not before pondered if there was a way to re-harden water that has been softened. In doing research, I'm not coming up with good answers. As you may know, most water softeners work by ion exchange - the calcium and magnesium ions that make water hard are replaced by sodium or potassium ions. I can't think of a way to swap them back. Even if you dissolved calcium or magnesium back into the water (not that you want to hassle with that, but just thinking theoretically), the sodium and potassium would still be there, interfering with the rinsing action of the water. The only advice I read is to use less soap and get used to the slippery feeling. That sounds less than useful to me, but I'm afraid your technique of rinsing with purified water may be the best recourse until you can make it up to your mountain cabin. Speaking of which, I think I need a mountain cabin, too! That sounds delightful.

Hi GE- I'm sorry to hear that our Castile Soap didn't work for you. The key to using a true soap to wash hair is to use an acidic rinse - either diluted apple cider vinegar or the Dr. Bronner’s Citrus Hair Rinse. While conventional shampoos are acidic, a true soap like the Castile has an alkaline pH which makes our hair kind of tacky/sticky feeling. The acidic rinse smooths everything down. There are two options for an acidic rinse. For my long, thicker hair, I use about 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar (ACV) diluted with another 1/2 cup of water. Or, I dilute a capful of Dr. Bronner’s Organic Citrus Hair Rinse in 1 cup of water and then pour it over my head and work it through and rinse thoroughly. Use less of either dilution if your hair is shorter. During the couple weeks of transition, especially if you’re coming from a conventional shampoo/conditioner regimen, you may need to use another crème conditioner after the rinse. It does take hair about 2 weeks to adjust to a new regimen. For more on washing hair with Castile Soap, check out this article on my website: bit.ly/ShampooToSoap

idk if u're still answering questions but i wanted to ask, me and my family moved to a place with well water (hard) as a water source and we've been noticing hair losss is this because of hard water or something else
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 25 күн бұрын
Hi Christopher - Hair loss is a tricky topic because there are so many variables that can contribute to it. Stress, not eating well, health changes. However, it is possible that very hard water, such as is common with wells, can be very drying to the hair and make it brittle and breakable. If there's no other cause you can identify, it might be worth looking into a point of use water softener that you attach on your shower head. There also are whole house water softeners.

I keep a jar of baking soda next to my sink. I use it to clean the sink. It's also good when you have a greasy pan. Sprinkle the baking soda onto the grease, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrape the grease into a bag for disposal.

Can you explain the potassium hydroxide in the ingredient list as to safety with dogs?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner Ай бұрын
Hi there- It's great that you read labels so closely and you're right to be concerned about what ingredients are used in pet products. Our soaps don’t actually contain any hydroxide in the final product. We use it to make our soaps, but none remains once the oils are turned into soaps. In the soap-making process, called saponification, our certified organic oils (palm, coconut, or olive) are reacted with equal amounts of an alkali, potassium hydroxide in this case, to turn these oils into what we call soap. You can read more about the saponification process on our website at www.drbronner.com/blogs/our-customers/making-the-best-soap

how can I then use dr bronner for washing clothes then? that I can use instead of vinegar as a fabric softener?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner Ай бұрын
Hi Steky- Good question! When added to the fabric softener compartment of the washing machine, the vinegar is dispensed during the rinse cycle, after the soap has been rinsed out of the fabrics. There’s no mixing of the two in this process. For High Efficiency (HE) washing machines, large load, use 3-4 Tbsp. (40-60 mL) Pure-Castile Liquid Soap. In a standard washing machine, use ⅓-½ c. (80-129 mL) Castile

But surely Sal Suds has SLS in which is known to be incredibly bad for us
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 2 ай бұрын
Hi there- Yes, Sal Suds, our household cleaner, is formulated with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) because of its keen ability to cut through grease and grime and to generate suds. Studies have consistently shown that SLS is safe to use in low concentrations and in products that are meant to be rinsed off - both of which are true of Sal Suds. The main concern with SLS is that it can be a skin irritant for some people because it can be so drying. It is so good at picking up oils that it pulls them right out of our skin! You won’t find SLS in any of our personal care products (Castile Soap, All-One Toothpaste, and so on) and personal care products that do include it should be avoided. For a deeper dive into SLS, check out my blog post on the topic: bit.ly/SLSInfo

Does anyone have a recipe for making homemade insecticidal soap, using Dr. Bronner’s *UNSCENTED* Castile soap, and peppermint oil?? I have found dozens of recipes online, but they all call for peppermint Castile soap, and I only have the plain soap. Please help me!! Lol

Hi J- A garden spray made of 1 Tbsp. Castile Soap (any scent) in a quart of water should do it. Spray plants twice daily in the cool of the day until infestation clears. If you'd like, add just a couple of drops of Peppermint essential oil to your solution.

@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 2 ай бұрын
Yes, my husband and I both wash our hair with the same Castile we use to wash our bodies. However, it is a little differen than shampoo. Most people, myself included, need to use an acidic rinse as a conditioner/smoother after washing with soap. Either the Dr. Bronner's Hair Rinse, apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice. My husband, whose hair is short and fairly coarse, does not use a rinse. Here's a longer article I wrote when I made this transition. www.lisabronner.com/from-shampoo-to-soap-my-story/
