I find picking currents tedious. And I think I’m allergic to the plant. But I do want to try to make jam out of them to see what they taste like with the sugar. I know that are way too tart to eat raw.

It is pretty tedious, that's for sure. Some people like eating the red ones raw, but not a lot all at once. I eat a few when out in the garden. The black ones, now those are definitely a different taste. Not sure how to describe it but not really very good raw. Robins been getting most of my reds.

No, I do not prewarm them. I do them just as I would be doing a load of regular food, like beans or corn. Some people do use the candy mode without the freezing and they seem to get them to turn out. Gummy candies can be tricky and it's hard to figure out what went wrong when they fail. Here is a Facebook group you might want to check out. You might find some answers there. R ya selling freeze dried candy? Or just for urself. If so how has it been selling. Thanks, i assume ur selling it with the bagged products at the end, im just getting into this business now, whats ur opinion on brands etc like to avoid im worried about for example buying say peach rings and wondering if so e brands wont work while others may. Same with the taffy i wonder what brands will succeed or fail, like say a name brand vs a dollar store brand or something

I have been selling candies. Bagged, labeled, sealed, etc. Your right about better or worse brands. Some work some not. A tip off is how much corn and modified corn starch is in the candy. High starch content and the candies will not work. High sugar and corn syrup candies work best. Some candies can be made to work by preheating them in an oven. Here is a group I belong to that has a lot of information in it. You will have to sift through it to find what you are looking for. Did you add warming time to the trays?
@wisgardener
@wisgardener Жыл бұрын
This video was before I had installed the "candy mode" , so no. At that time there was no adding time for warming the trays. Here the rings are going to freeze before they start the freeze dry process. But I do now have the "candy mode" but for peach rings I still do not add Xtra warm time. For me, these turn out better if I first freeze them and then run the F D cycle. Usually I let the machine continue in the freezing mode until it gets to about 15°F before continuing. Then I skip the warm trays altogether.

@shellic5166
@shellic5166 2 жыл бұрын
@Wis.Gardener yeah I keep hearing the same everywhere. However, when I put together the videos of people doing them, they all came out around the same time. I have heard that when you freeze them first the skins will split so you don't have to poke. Maybe that is happening. I haven't found a video yet where someone doesn't freeze them first. So maybe the longer time comes from putting them in fresh instead of frozen 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is this machine you’re using to make these, the same as a food dehydrator? If not, where can I purchase this machine or one similar? Thank you!

Hi Tiffany. No it is not the same as a dehydrator. The finished food will be quite different. Here is a link to where I bought mine; harvestright.com/ and another one that seems to be getting more popular is; stayfreshfreezedry.com/. I have the medium Harvest Right in stainless steel. If you research them (Harvest Right) you might get scared off as there are some people that have not had a good experience with them. But other than once when they sent out an update on the software, I haven't had any real problems. If you want to see the difference in freeze drying vs. dehydrating check out this video. This lady has other videos comparing the two, so just do a freeze dry search on her site. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6rRlWqbpa-JrLc. Let me know if you make a decision. Mark

I am not familiar with that brand of freeze dryer. I did look it up to see what they have. If you tell me what model you have maybe I can find out some info on it. I'm sure it can be figured out. The home freeze dryers I do know about seem to be pretty similar. But the interface (where you enter the info) is more complicated than others. The one I have (Harvest Right) is pretty simple and straight forward to learn. Plus there are Facebook groups for it out there. I couldn't find any for the Lanphan. We probably have to figure out the "time stamp" thing here. Here is there Face Book page. @@elliellio4657 Just thinking about your problem. The 3 main things to getting the candy to puff up are; 1. the right kind of candy. Some candies are not going to work. The ones that are high in sugar and corn syrup work the best. If they are high in starch, they probably won't work. 2. Heat. 140 F (60 celcius) to 150 F (65 C) seem to be the best. And 3. Vacuum. Make sure that your getting a vacuum in your freeze dryer.

As a teen in 1980 I borrowed that book from the library. I had never heard of wild foraging ,but liked the idea of it. But when my mother saw it she immediately broke into laughter, which perplexed me. She then explained that Euell Gibbons had been the brunt running jokes on TV game shows, such as 'Match Game' ,and other TV shows in the late 1960's early 70's. Apparently many people back then had thought it was an absurd idea to wild forage, funny how things change and have come full circle and so many are getting back to learning about wild foraging again.

Sweet peas like to grow in clumps. Leave what you have and let the seeds drop. Don't move the soil or debris and they will come back next year. They actually do like to be on the ground or climb over a small mound. We had them naturally growing on a slope in our yard and we never did anything to them. They took care of themselves in NH.. I grew them in the mountains in colorado, from seed and they did well there, too. Other times, in warmer climates, nothing happened. You didn't fail. Next year you should have many more if you just leave things alone and keep out the wild animals.
