Im sorry but this nice well meaning lady is very much wrong on a number of points regarding Akitas, almost all of them... My family shares our home with a rescue belgian malinois and a rescue japanese akita. The latter came to me after having killed a chicken and maybe a poodle or two... I knew it was going to be a big commitment but I felt it was worth the effort and without hesitancy brought her home... The akita was addition number 2 and the two different breeds idea of high value treats are completely different... I cant begin to find a high value food item/treat that actually motivates my akita to do anything, she couldnt care less, the Malinois is the exact opposite... Unfortunately I could not disagree with you more about the japanese Akita breeds temperament, they may take more work but can be just as warm and affectionate and loving as any other family dog you could ever want... I disagree with your firm separation during feeding... My dogs eat out of 2 bowls 2" away from each other always and Ive never once had a problem, in fact its actually a bonding moment every day. Both know which bowl is theres, both wait patiently while preparations are happening.. They get it, both know there gonna get fed and all is well... The Akita is significantly more aloof but just as warm and affectionate as my other dog, its just on her terms.. My akita is also wonderful with my kids, trust her 1000% with them.. Would feel very sorry for anyone that tries to enter my home or harm my kids as my dogs will wreck you, you will need a casket or at best a new face but vs having a gun in my home I trust my dogs infinitely.. I think you have to approach every dog with the goal of figuring out what motivates him or her and again building trust super is important.. There million ways to do this, could be treats and work, giving the dog a job or purpose, could be but positive reinforcement, love and attention... There all different but the most important thing is building trust... My maligator is a typical gator, very high energy protective as hell but extremely well controlled, more so than the Akita. I am 1000% confident in both my dogs as family members, never ever worry at all when my 8 yr old is playing crazy rough with the dogs...THE AKITA LOVES IT!!! That being said I have learned to simply expect that the akita is brilliant with people, kids etc but a tad more volatile in particular with new dogs and I have to be very much more mindful about ensuring I am in control of the situation at all times.. It is true also Akitas will pick and choose dogs they like or not, sometimes sex driven, sometimes fast moving little dogs trigger the prey drive etc... That all being said I have never had to pull my Akita off another dog, she does respect her place in our pack and if I feel it necessary upon an introduction particularly with a new small dog I will occasionally employ a muzzle.. Its a momentary trick, then I walk the dogs together and I gradually slip the muzzle off and generally by the time I get home the chemistry is happening on its own...... Bottom line these are wonderful dogs, goldens are nifty too but no where near as rewarding as an Akita or a Malinois...

holy shit this is my girl... Im a rover provider and wound up making this dog part of my family after her owner passed away.. She did eat a couple dogs before I met her... Fortunately she and my belgian Malinois get along like peanut butter and jelly... Shes become the best family dog... I love her so much.. She reminds me very much of the chow that was my first dog... I love these independent asian breeds...

I’ve met two types of Akitas - they either hate everyone or once they find out you’re not a threat they sort of ignore you. Guy down the street had one as a child and that was my intro to them. He’d walk him daily and I’d walk with them a couple times a week(he was the coolest guy). After a couple weeks the dog saw it as normal and didnt show much alertness around me anymore. I would pet him sometimes and he’d act like I wasn’t even there despite petting him. He neither liked nor disliked me. Hated every single dog he ever saw though

Thank you for the video sir, you're presenting us with true and realistic reasons why some people should not own them. I respect that. New sub here. 6. Another reason why you might not want an Akita is it takes time for an Akita to accept you as its owner, always remember if you think you've picked a dog, the dog is really picking you. So if you do get one make sure you slowly develop your relationship to your new furfriend or your Akita may end up thinking you're very much a push over and will dominate you. Like he said in the video be patient with the Akita, if you show the Akita you are patient, the Akita will learn that and understand itself to match his or her patience with yours. Never raise your voice at your Akita only deepen your tone with one. So if you can no longer keep your furfriend and you're selling make sure you allow the time for the potential new owners to get used to your potential previous pet. 7. Another reason why you might not want an Akita, when they play they do play rather rough (not to intentionally harm you but its the general way their ancestors were) So if they don't exactly have a family line you very well may end up with an Akita that does not know it's own power. So expect to have a few claws sinking into your skin with some scarring also. Again patience is key; deepen your voice, without raising your voice and tell the Akita No. The Akita is not a bad dog, it's a bad action so never tell him or her "bad dog". 8. Akitas are extremely loyal to the owner and the family. So if you argue alot and have fights this beautiful breed should never bare witness to any wrong doing or you could tarnish the Akitas trust in you as an owner and scare him/ her away. Or he or she will end up hurting someone you maybe arguing at. So make sure this breed you get is in a true loving environment, family, friends and local area. 9. Another reason why you shouldn't get an Akita is Sebaceous adenitis (not all Akitas have it) a skin condition which involves inflammation of the sebaceous glands which can lead to fur loss, scaly skin and dandruff. Sure it's treatable through the use medicated shampoos, diluted propylene glycol sprays, Doxycycline, other types of oral medication and supplements like Niacinamide, Omega fatty acids & Vitamin A. The way to cure fur loss in dogs is 5mg of steriods but it's not typically good for an Akitas heart because that could lead to heart palputations and strokes. Especially since your Akita is proactive and will need and want to run around. It is extremely costly but once you think it's cured and can come back within 1 or two months so it's constant checking of your Akita to see if it's flared up or not. It's rather costly but if you stick by your Akita through thick and thin your pet will love you for it as you love your pet. Over 1 year and 7 months ago i had a stubborn Akita, usually when i get a new dog i give them an entire week for them to do almost anything they want so i can study and individualize the dog away from the breed itself and focus on the dog as an animal rather the breed. Too keep it short as possible my Akita went from not knowing his own power to being a gentle giant toward me. However he's still rough with other people and that's ok because he's my Guard dog but he will not budge until i tell him too. If he see's an immediate threat to me or he feels he's being taken away from me he will shred them with his claws until i tell him to use his teeth. He makes extremely good decisions he's not aggressive but he scares everyone around me because he's letting them know i'm the master. He gets on with my Husky and American Pitbull, he's not rough with them but he allows my Husky to be rough with him lol I love Akitas of all breeds but sadly we may end up seeing a ban where i am at because people use these breeds to do shady work with.

My beautiful Boysenberry I such an goofball and cuddle monster… but… when she sees critters, birds, rabbits, foxes or jackals she can’t be stopped… she hunts to kill.. and she does it quite well… we never encourage or reward that kind behavior but since we live next to large forest we can’t have control over that… she is an absolute expert at it.. only 3 years old…

Great video, very informative and dispels a lot of myths. My American Akita is a 3 yr old male (120lbs) that we’ve had from an 8 week old puppy. We’ve given him the love that every dog deserves and it has paid off so far. He has a fantastic temperament towards people and always seems to know how gentle to be when meeting elders or infants, he is also great with our grandchildren. His instinctual nature to protect is evident as he guards our property with absolute resolute. When meeting other dogs, it can be bit of hit and miss, I have to be weary of this and keep him tethered at all times when out in public. His loyalty is second to none and he is also very affectionate for a large breed dog. I’ve had many dogs in the past, but this guy has a special place in my heart. I would recommend this breed to an experienced dog owner.

Greetings from Brazil!! 🙂 My Kyodai, white Japanese Akita, has 10 months now. He's already an excellent guardian. I don't know if there are significant differences in behavior between the American Akita and the Akita Inu, but I know that the Japanese Akita only tolerates strangers, other dogs if they are smaller or elderly and should live, at most, in couples. What I do with mine is go out on the street, stop in squares, restaurants, but it's very obvious that strangers touching him causes stress for him. Perhaps the American Akita, because it has the German Shepherd in its genetics, is more tolerant than the primitive Akita Inu. But in terms of guard, company and loyalty, I can already see my Kyodai being the best breed I've ever had. I even looked for my Akita Inu for 30 years. I studied a lot about this race. Your dog is beautiful!! Sorry for my English, I hope my English isn't too wrong! :-)

An Akitas temperament depends on breeders some just cashing in on puppies all puppies are cute. My Akitas love other dogs and cats even chickens they lay around and bother nothing until the temp drops below 32° f they get happy then.

I grew up with Akitas, they are probably my favorite breed overall. But, my climate just wouldn't be good for one (Southern AZ), and I understand a lot of the challenges they pose. We wound up getting an American bulldog because they have some of the same behavioral characteristics as Akitas when it comes to loving their family and being good guardians, but she does much better in the summer. But man, do I miss the fluffy bears.

Not all "Ethical" breeders are truly ethical. Quite a few years ago there was an Akita male that needed a home. I contacted the owner and found out his breeder was one of the top breeders in the US. In her contract she states that she will take back any of her pups! She refused to take this pup back! I contacted her multiple times and she blew me off! At the time 1 of her dogs was the #1 Akita in the US. I was disgusted with her lack of ethics.

Not true. Just be a good dog owner and take a course on how to train dogs. I have two Akitas and they’re the best with my kids since my kids are babies. When you have a dog, especially dominant ones you have to establish leadership. A dog is a dog if you want a toy you shouldn’t own one. Crate train your dog never let them sleep on beds as they will get dominant. Establish your home as your space and him obeying your rules. Akitas are the best dogs I have ever had. I have them since 2 1/2 years now and my 3 kids are all under 8 year old at the moment. Training and consistency is key, positive + negative training too. Meaning get that prong collar but still have that reward when they do good! Educate yourself

@@moorelife4449 It depends on who bred them and if they have a furfamily line. For the most part, most Akitas are socially encouraging and have no issues with each other. I have came across Akitas with very limited social skills with both their own breed and other dog breeds because some breeders do not consider parent training a thing due to the fact they profit off of breeding.

See I didn't know. I wish i did. I ended up paying almost 8 grand. She was 23 months old. I never fed her giant meals, 2 small ones a day. Yes she walked after dinner, then went out on deck and did her jump spins, I brought her in cuz she was going ape ish, then she sat there staring and panting. I took her immediately in. They did do the prevention surgery after they untwisted her stomach. She was around 70lbs at the time. Now going on 4 she's about 100. All good knock on wood. I had a great doctor and looking back now I'm glad I didn't pay 4500-5000 and get a hack vet. 😊

Mine was easy but I was glad I heeded the warnings anyway. I had the space and the time to argue (train), exercise and socialize. Both ACL’s went out at 4 and 5 years respectively, TPLO was $10k and soft tissue on the other was about $6k. Worth it, she was healthy otherwise up to 13 years. If you can get an oversized garbage can it’s something to consider, a dead adolescent raccoon will just about fill up a standard container. I have a Malinois now, kind of nice to have a low maintenance dog for a change.
