Yup, fostered abused adult Rotties for years and the ones food aggressive were hand fed, some for months and had friends over to feed them too. These hounds were very close to me and it became a bonding moment and it made many other re-trainings a lot easier. The more they trusted me, I'd do little teases more and more to let them know that food was not so important that it was worth fighting over- they were going to get the food.

Our first show breed. We had our hands in the bowl with the kibble from the outset with every puppy. In addition we taught the puppies not to play bite. No, not by striking them; by baiting them, to play bite then in a circular motion going around the muzzle then gently holding the mouth closed saying firmly; don't bite!

This is our second Akita and he definitely has resource guarding issues he has got me twice, but I’m determined to break that habit. One thing I can say is he knows when he has done something wrong he immediately sits down and drops his head. I’m definitely going to start feeding him from my hand for a while he is such a good boy very very smart!! We will be getting another one in about 3 weeks so I’m definitely going to try some new things!! Any tips or advice is appreciated 🥰

We had the issue with food since day 1 when we first got our Japanese Akita. We hand fed him for quite some time, did intervals and after a huge effort he is now very relaxed with it. BUT he developed a similar behavior with his "house" and especially during the night. And he got really aggressive (growling hard) even when we stepped out or went near. We are currently working on it with... treats (what else). We just step outside and throw some treats without any other contact (stage1), then combine it with interaction and commands (stage2). Seems to be working well so far. My point for the long post was that even if you tackle one problem, another one might come up unexpectedly. Especially with a more dominant dog as ours seems to be.

Yep, they have emotions and mood swings and changes in habits just like people! Japanese Akitas can be known to be a bit more territorial than AAs too.

For my first akita puppy, when she became territorial over her crate, I kicked her out and sat in it. She wasn’t allowed in with me until she calmed. Then I welcomed her in and played with her. She was so confused but happy. After that, she was good with it and even walked kids into her crate to play 🤗

Hand feeding. The one thing that came to my mind was "wash hands before hand feeding", for the dogs health. The advice you gave on giving attention, petting, touching in intervals of eating and taking away the food for a few minutes... Seems gentle, caring, and loving. You have my admiration, and total respect! Thank you!

I wouldn’t necessarily do an extra hand wash before feeding them. They do lick the floor, chew on dirt and twigs, and attempt to pick up everything (rusty nails included…seriously). Just like toddlers, I spend most of my time preventing them from killing themselves. Washing my hands before feeding them is the absolute least of my worries. Congrats on your dog tho!

I work really hard to make sure my Akita is not food or toy aggressive. It’s important too get your whole family on board too. We can touch, pet, mess with her while she’s eating and playing with her toys. Even when she steals food from the trash we can open her mouth and take it away. I make food for her so I make her sit and wait. She literally sits and watch me prep her food patiently. We started as soon as we got her home at 8 weeks. Setting boundaries is so important in any dog. We use everything in the video. Wonderful tips, but for it to work consistency is key. Implement it everyday.

Thanks! Haga is "ok" with other dogs. It's very situational. We bring him to doggy day care and he loves to play with other dogs there, but if we have him on a leash for a walk, and we cross paths with another dog, he can be very aggressive.
@isaacgovender6633 жыл бұрын
To be honest as dominant as they are they very friendly with dogs of all sorts, however you do get those antisocial dogs. But also its the owners that you should worry about cause when they see an akita up close they quiet large and sometimes even thou the dogs are fine the owners can get scared leading to the dogs aggression also the way Akitas play is not normal its like 2 rex fighting but thats just playfull nature of the breed. But again always watch body language and posture of your dog 😁 @the akita life, sorry if i message on your channel its just good to find a reputable channel where the owner who talks about these magnificent dogs has one. I just like helping as well cause i know the struggles of these powerful dominant bear dogs 😁
@revallmccalla34632 жыл бұрын
Always begin with hand feeding. Even if you don’t use it as a training tool, you can deconstruct the aggression. While they eat from your palm rub them and vocally encourage them that this is the preferred behavior. Once your dog is comfortable with eating from the hand (as shown by being gentle) you can pour the food from your hand into the bowl and allow them to alternate from hand to bowl while rubbing and encouraging. Finally, taking the food away will be easier and not spark the aggression as your dog will be eager to hear the encouragement and not the correction word. Hope this helps with the more aggressive pups. I have done this even with other people’s dogs who asked for my help and it works

Ex ( American ) Akita Owner - 2nd Dog, Male ( GEB), topped out at 80kgs due to steroids but was always a big guy. Local petshop purchase , committed first - then did background reading - ooops. He went through recognizable phases of adolescence and adulthood. Agree totally with advice given here. What worked for us: training - back in the day used chain collar but sparingly - he only needed to be told once and it was a mutual agreement Pecking order - literally got down on all fours and bowled him over ( while i could ) to teach him whos was leader . Food - Taught him patience - would fake eating out of his bowl , balancing treats on his nose etc , never ever ate without a release command. Soft mouth - taught very early to exert no pressure while "playing" - went to socializing sessions with other dogs before he realized how big he got. Only saw him in anger once while being attacked by a Shar pei that charged him , owner had no idea, didnt pay for vet bills . would let most dogs annoy him while quietly flattening them Family - we had two young boys so he served protector role and a good level of "tolerance" for visiting minors but we would NEVER assume anything - have seen him quietly do some amazing herding work protecting his pack while on beach walks. Prey instinct - Cats, Geese ,,,,,etc , HIGH and dangerous - at a distance with notice controllable - otherwise forget it AGE - our poor guy made it to 10 even with a rare blood and bone disorder - he had a Frozen Nasa approved leg and some plastic bits - was an absolute joy and accepted anyone we approved of. Enter ownership with eyes wide open and be prepared to work day 1

I have a 1 1/2 year old American Akita. Black brown and white. Her name is Nala an she's about 70 lbs now. Also have a Irish wolfhound weights about 175 lbs. His name is Simba cause he looks just like a damn lion. It's crazy the way they play and my Akita actually is the Alpha out of the two. Our wolfhound is a big teddy bear around her lol. But I love to take them on walks and everyone we see can't help but to comment on his size and her beautiful coat colors. Now sometimes Simba will try to walk me instead of me walk him and Nala will snap at him. She's so intelligent she will sing and talk to you and do a little paw dance when I get home from work. I couldn't imagine my life without my best friend's. A person doesn't truly experience unconditional love until they have had a dog.

It Works. That's what I did with my Akita and GSD. I taught the Akita her name, sit and stay in the first 3 Days. Also wait to eat and not run into house like a Bull. The two dogs can eat out of each other's bowl at the same tine, no Fuss Same with the Big water bowl. I make their food and sometimes rushing I don't mix it up well, so they just pick out the Meat. I reach down and mix it up with a spoon while their eating, no problems. All this interaction bonds all of us. They want to cuddle after eating. Then it's time for a nap and they fight who is going to chew my dirty laundry and sleep on it. Good Comprise because they are not allowed in the bed or on furniture.

@TheAkitaLife3 жыл бұрын
We currently feed him Victor Purple bag, but we are switching soon because he may have a chicken allergy and chicken is one of the main ingredients I'm the Victor Purple bag food. As far as adding an Akita to your family, it really depends on how Shepskys are with other dogs, but typically it's easier to add an Akita puppy to a family that already has a dog than vice versa. Just make sure to get an Akita from a reputable breeder who is breeding dogs with well mannered temperament.

Is it safe to get a Akita when you have a small dog already ? I have a mini Aussiedoodle and she’s not much of a guard dog but I love Akita’s and was wondering if you thought it would be a good breed since you know Akita behavior first hand ?
@TheAkitaLife3 жыл бұрын
Very difficult to say. I would talk to an Akita rescue first. They will know if any of the dogs they are looking to home can be in a home with another dog. If they don't have any that will fit the bill, find a reputable breeder. You will have to get a male Akita because Akitas are extremely same sex aggressive. You'll also need to be prepared if they they don't get along, you'll need a plan to keep them separated in the house.
@isaacgovender6633 жыл бұрын
I would suggest get a pup Akita if you get a full grown or 3month old akita then it would be a problem also like said above same sex is not good, however i have 2 males ones a french bulldog and then i had my akita pup at 11 weeks back then it was not easy amazingly to handle the french bulldog but once you train your akita with a strong leave command and get them to know you are alpha things would slowly get better. From experience it took my boys about almost a year before they got along and in that year it was time consuming so make sure you have alot of time to always be around them and watch their behaviour and posture for any signs once you master all of the above life would be awesome My akita turned 2 the other day and my french is now 12 (old boy) but they are now inseparable and even theres no food aggression cause you are alpha and they understand if i am okay then they are okay so if you want an akita along with a small breed you can do it, but it all depends on you as a owner and as always in all the vids is persistence and time 😊 hope this was informational i would like to share more but fingers are tired of typing and i do not want to have my own youtube channel 😅 id rather support this channel and type my comments here 😁😁😁 All the best in the journey of owning which for me is the best cuddly bear dog ever😁😁
