Something I'm glad about is Valve finally fixing the os getting corrupted. That bug resulted in me having to factory reset my deck 3 times before I realized it was the beta (or potentially decky loader) that caused it.

I just went from stable to beta last week on account of my games constantly crashing (i think my unit was 1 that came with a faulty PS) so i thought, why not try it and see what happens? Welp, it didn't help my situation. in fact it made it worse. i now have issues with my Steam deck crashing after just booting up sitting on Steam OS. Sometimes when it freezes, it makes this clicking sound that wont stop till i hard PD. I also noticed that in beta, the audio always wants to pick external for default. if you restart your system, any changes made to the audio, will revert. After going back to stable, I now have to joy of not knowing if my browsers are going to crash. Brave and Firefox and Chrome don't like to play video. Freeze to hard PD again. the OS is more likely to get hung up when there is nothing going on but it crashes more in desktop then SteamOS. Funny thing is, i can watch youtube on SteamOS as a non game but try to have any videos at like thumbnail style and boom it freezes. Would like this to be fixed and my touch screen stopped working 6 months ago. I can try opening another ticket with Valve but I'm not sure it will help. 🤕

When you think about it, with how much Valve makes per employee, it makes sense they don't do much game development anymore. Either they have to pay their game devs much less than the rest of the staff, or they have to pay game devs a superstar wage in an industry where they compete with studios that underpay and exploit their workers.

Thanks for the video, Rich! I don't mind this 3.6 stable channel update being fairly light, since there's definitely a lot in the oven that needs more time - like Steam Game Recording. I'm actually a bit hyped for that clip shortcut feature because that to me brings it up to parity with what Decky Recorder offered. The only thing that sucks is that if I use the beta client, some of my Decky plugins (like Tab Master) are inaccessible. I can't have that at all, no way. I would assume that as SteamOS matures, they would eventually focus on a standalone version, but it's probably something that's fallen a bit by the wayside as HoloISO and Bazzite have sort of taken the mantle for standalone PC gaming on Linux. The Acer Nitro handheld looks alright, though I know that it'll just be another handheld in the sea of powerful PC handhelds and boutique retro handheld offerings and we'll see the usual rundown from the likes of Retro Game Corps and so on in regards to its usefulness. So long as that Xbox One compatibility layer means we can finally get Rare Replay on PC, I'm listening. 😯 Lastly, and to be honest... the EmuDeck Machine is not really something I have much faith in. I can understand the potential of an all-in-one retro games emulation machine, but it's probably a bit lost on me since I use my Steam Deck for my emulation needs. Then I'd say that it's maybe for the folks that are entry-level? Even then, it makes me wonder if someone's just better off saving up for a PC handheld instead since that price is about enough for a 512GB Steam Deck OLED or an ROG Ally, or just shy of the Ally X's price. I can only wait and see how things go, and can only hope for the best instead of dooming it to fail outright.
@FanTheDeck4 ай бұрын
Awesome insight as usual, friend. I've had to wrestle with Decky and Beta before and I decided to stick to not using Decky because of this. It's not Decky's fault but having access to Steam Deck's Beta features have been important to me. To your point, maybe once Family Sharing and Game Recording comes to Stable, that'll be a good opportunity for me to revisit Decky. I would genuinely love it if Valve were to embrace Bazzite or other distros somehow. I'm not sure what the right answer is there but I don't think Valve has to feel the pressure to do gen-pop SteamOS when others are doing such wonderful work. Yeah on the one hand, it's not like handhelds need a ton of innovation but on the other hand, I'm not yet sure what Nitro Blaze could do to make itself a better recommendation than Ally/Go, except maybe price. I have the same fear for EmuDeck Machines. I want them to succeed bc I like EmuDeck and I know it's hard to make hardware. But even now, I continue to second guess my backing. It's a lot of money when I can just permanently dock a Steam Deck.
@SylverstoneKhandr4 ай бұрын
@@FanTheDeck Decky is a necessity for me based on a lot of the tweaks I make to my Steam Deck experience, from the look and feel (CSS Loader/SteamGridDB), to the little extra features peppered in that feel like they should've been in the vanilla experience - especially TabMaster. I do hope that in time, those Beta features make it over to Stable, especially Game Recording. It would be nice if Valve gave their blessing or simply deferred to the other distros in the meantime - it'll be less of a headache for them to figure out how to deal with other PC handhelds that could benefit from SteamOS since Bazzite's been really showing the hell up as of late. You did say last time that everyone and their mum would be getting into the PC handheld space since the Deck (and the Ally) basically established that this sort of market exists, so perhaps the Blaze is just fulfilling that. You already know there will be more to come, be it revisions to already existing handhelds, or even handhelds from larger companies. I do like EmuDeck a ton, really I do. This EmuDeck Machine is a big gamble because I feel like they haven't exactly proved what the purpose is outside of simply monetizing nostalgia - not a bad thing, everyone's done it at some point from way back when to the current day. It's just that I saw them primarily as software guys that provided a really good solution to simplifying the process of getting emulation up and running. Definitely looking forward to that review, and like I said, I wouldn't mind being wrong and seeing them be successful with this venture but it's an uphill battle.

Emudeck's hardware needs to be cheaper then a Steam Deck. Otherwise you're better off just buying a Steam Deck. "one to one" really should get an asterix when it comes to these decompiles. Certainly does help bring the game closer to its source material, but would likely still need some finagling to get the same experience. A lot of older games had a tendency to push the hardware so hard that they would time by frame rate and not by time. Happened less in that generation, but occasionally some code would slip through in crunch with someone trying to fix a bug or add a last minute feature. Which means some rewrites might be needed.

It would be, but I just don't see it happening yet. at least based on what I know of architectures. There hasn't been a significant performance gain per watt until recently, So they're going to have to spin that into custom silicon. Specifically because valve use quad channel memory instead of dual channel, which is non-standard on that architecture. If it's based on the same architecture as amds ai300 chips. I think its a likely canidate for the z2's base. That's the closest candidate I have spotted so far. The Z2 is supposed to be released in 2025. But I hope I'm wrong 😂

Hello to all of the decks owners. I'm in need of some advice and your opinions. As some one who wants to get back in WoW (wold of warcraft). I was wondering, should I choose an ASUS TUF F15 or go with a steam deck? I've seen some videos where some people have been using theirs decks in desktop mode like pc and then curling up in comfort and playing in handheld mode. This would be fantastic for my work needs and personally, this is the major reason why I'm condsidering the steam deck over the laptop, plus I found out you can hook up any bluetooth controller to it including joycons which would be brilliant for weekend gaming session with the family. Without waffling on are there any steam deck owners who play WoW out there? I'd love to here your thoughts on the matter. Thnaks in advance.
@puabl06824 ай бұрын
WoW runs great on steam deck, learning to play on controller is a bit of a learning curve. You will typically need the add-on Console port to handle the controller bindings. Consoleport fully supports the steam deck and all its buttons as well as steam input being a god send for bindings the steam deck controls to PC controls already. Setting up the interact key is my best tip, something convenient you can press easily, I use a back paddle. This trivialises the need to pick up items by pointing the camera and pressing right thumbstick or using the steam decks trackpad. I've also bound the extra action button in wow to a modifier of the interact key as that helps with questing. console port has a utility ring for using quest items by holding both triggers an A by default. Steam deck excels at leveling and questing. I do also happily do dungeons, normals, heroics, mythics and mythic+. I've tanked, healed and DPS'd mythic+ all through Dragonflight. Healing was the hardest, I mostly tanked. PvP is tricky as you need to move your camera a lot vs players but it's also possible. I can happily hang out with friends in discord and play wow on the sofa. It has many conveniences from being able to squeeze in a bit more leveling in bed to just staying ingame and talking to my friends while cooking to farming rare spawns while I do something else on my computer. I did find somebody playing streaming themselves playing wow on a computer using consoleport and a playstation controller to tank 2k+ Raider I.O mythic+ keys. With a steam deck OLED I get about 5 and a half hours of battery life when playing wow on not the lowest settings and frame rate capped to 40FPS/80Hz, this feels identical to 60FPS/60Hz. It goes without saying classic wow plays even better on the steam deck, more battery life, less complicated game, perfect for leveling characters or doing dungeons and raids with friends. I could not recommend wow on the steam deck more, there are many videos on KZbin walking you through consoleport and the install on steam os. Installing battle.net is fairly painless. You can use a program in desktop mode called lutris to install battle.net using a community made script for the install. You can also download the battle.net exe, add it to steam as a non steam game (right click the exe from your downloads folder and you can add it to steam). Then set proton version to experimental. Once battle.net is installed you need to repoint the "battle.net setup.exe" to the installed "battle.net launcher". This is found in the hidden folder .steam -> steamapps -> compatdata -> folders with the extra long numbers are non steam games. There are guides easier to follow for this.

@Talking_Ed At this point it's more like Linux has been supporting Valve, not the other way around. Linux had been stuck at 2% market share since it launched in 1991, the same time as Sonic the Hedgehog, that's how long it's been around. It jumped to above 5% market share after Steam and Valve jumped onboard, and did so in a matter of two years. Considerably less than the two decades Linux tried and failed to do so on its own, even with Windows crapping the bed.
