The Acer guy is probably correct. PC handhelds must be priced so aggressively to compete with the Deck, that the resulting profit margins are probably not worth the cost and risks associated with production. Valve makes their money selling games, not hardware. Hardware companies will never compete with them, at least on price. This is precisely why I want a Steam Console so badly. Valve can make a device priced and spec'd similarly to gaming consoles, but with the massive benefit of SteamOS. Gaming mode replaces your living room console, desktop mode replaces your PC. I already do this with a docked Steam Deck and the experience has been very good. It's time for Steam Machine 2.0

They basically want to capture and lockdown the Steam market and pocket it into their ecosystem, none of which we asked for. This is why I hate when publishers come crawling to Steam, because they only care about stealing from Steam's userbase, rather than selling to Steam users and playing nice. Instead it's DRM/account sign-up/Data collection enforcements, coupled with higher prices, and all of that is enough to put me off buying from any publisher that comes to Steam and expects me to put up with all that uneeded crap. That screenshot also shows something that reads as waydroid, which is a way to run android applications in a linux environment. That needs at least a special kernel module. I really like to be able to run android applications on Linux. Maybe that would be a way to view bimx files on the steam deck.

Yes, it's a little complicated to explain entirely in a video but the point is they're using multiple different compatibility tools for different purposes and all of them are to beef up Linux compatibility: Waydroid -> Makes it possible to play AndroidARM games on LinuxARM Proton -> Makes it possible to play Win-x86 games on Linux-x86 ProtonARM -> Makes it possible to play WinARM and Win-x86 games on LinuxARM And it gets deeper than that because Proton is a fork of WINE and ProtonARM seems to be leveraging FEX. WINE itself has updates that address WindowsARM to LinuxARM compatibility. We haven't seen any source code for ProtonARM so could it be a fork of like Box86/Box64 or something? And what about making games playable on AndroidARM? Are they going to do that too? Lots of questions still left to answer.

getting a steamdeck in australia was already possible, it was just a bit expensive due to import fees and you had to be careful which one you got since our electrical system is 240 volts which the US charger wont be able to handle
@helbertgascon2 ай бұрын
I think it's main target is not VR but MacOS. Not sure if you are aware but there are 3 big groups working in this. Primarily it is the Wine community where Proton is based from. Second is Proton itself that's coming from Valve. And lastly, Crossover from the Codeweaver group that's primarily working on it on ARM support. But since it is opensource we should be expecting ports from it soon. Mainly from the mobile phone and VR also. Android today can already play PC x86 games thru emulators. AFAIK I can already see a playable Fallout 4. This should give me reason to buy foldable devices soon 😆

You are a noble, and a very humble KZbinr within the steam deck community. Very professional, addressing the news for steam deck users regardless if you play the game or not. I can’t say the same for Jimmy Champane. I hate to bring the guy down so much, but he really rubbed me the wrong way with how he addressed me for saying that he could’ve potentially forgot to mention - his response was to not be like the rest of the KZbinrs. If Rockstar does not solve issues with Linux and BattleEye I'm not buying any more games from them. It's not even a boycott, I simply planing to fully move to Linux so they clearly do not want me and other like me as their customers. Edit: btw Steamdeck should avoid Japan at all cost since Nintendo can register a patent for portable devices and sue Valve. Yes Nintendo can do this retrospectively and it doesn't even have to be a novelty ...same as with Palworld. F corrupt Japan and f Nintendo.

Ugg. I still hate Sony for not making a Days Gone 2. Hopefully the remastered is a good sign that they might change their mind. It’s one of the few games I’ve every Plantanum and actually wanted more. If they are doing a remaster. I wish they would add content. More missions, fleshed out bases. The game is so good, but at the same time, it felt unfinished. Like you could see the potential off a huge open wold MMO type game, and that would have been chiefs kiss. Instead of making these horrible new IPS, they should have really rebooted this franchise.

There is definitely a market for handhelds, PC handleds are relatively "new" (Nvidia started it, gpd and ayaneo were keeping it alive, steam brought it to its golden age) but none of these PC/laptop manufactures will ever do console let alone steamdeck, psp, or switch numbers because they all have one thing in common, they all sell at a major loss because they have exclusive/games and/or a digital store they take a cut off all game sells (like apple and Google with apps). Valve can afford to take a loss cause they'll make it back on the 30% Percent they make back on all game sales on their store front, and guess who just bought some games, a new steam deck owner or really any PC handheld owner, it's why steam they have so many sales. People buy more when their are deals vs none. Acer, Asus, Lenovo have to sell these devices and laptop prices or they won't make any money back, their income is purely from the hardware sale not games or software sales. I hope with all these new handheld it doesn't set the precedent for more store fronts.

I have confidence Valve will actually give refunds to anyone who bought GTAV just to play it on Steam Deck. To those people, the game is now broken, and Rockstar is responsible for that. I doubt you'll get a refund if you've had the game for several years, but if you got it after you purchased a Steam Deck, there is a decent chance Valve will take your side.

If Proton (ARM) releases in a competent and feature-full state, that would mean major strides being made in battery life for future ARM iterations of devices like the Steam Deck, which would be huge. Currently getting anywhere from as little as 30 minutes to as much as 8 hours of on-screen-time on the Deck, depending on game/workload, is rough. Switching to ARM, even with the same battery capacity, could see those numbers change to anywhere from 90 minutes at minimum (though that's a generous minimum, assuming other hardware stays mostly the same) to as high up as about 14 hours with lite gaming. The future looks good for handheld gaming, and I'm here for it. I'm not even upset in the least about being a "beta tester" for Deck V1; it's been a wild and exciting ride, and I have loved every second of using my Deck.

The handheld market is huge (if you add smartphones); Nintendo should *not* have the gaming hardware space unopposed -- especially post-Switch. PC makers should really get in that handheld market to force Nintendo to step up -- and I'm speaking as a lifelong Nintendo fan who's OK w/their shitty hardware specs.

Proton on ARM is crazy. I don't think it's going to be a phone, but maybe a more efficient future device. But I suppose the cheap (retro)handheld space like Retroid and Ambernic will gobble that up and hopefully succeed where ASUS and others failed. Also, the Hololive RP server was hilarious.

Acer gives up because they don't have a software platform that makes it usable. They should work together with Valve. But it is very hard to beat Valve, as they got to a very very good pricepoint. Valve did give anyone a chance to enter the PC console market, but we can see what happened to the steam machine. I think Alienware was the only one that did try to add support for their specific hardware. The Zotac SN970 however (my steam machine) really isn't impressive in terms of support. All they needed to do is do BIOS updates to fix some ACPI problems. I am very happy that after the HTC Vive, Valve decided to do it better with the Index. And with that knowledge also did it better than the steamboy/Smach Z and every other PC console manufacturer that was not interested in fixing BIOS or ACPI tables. (ACPI tables describe and operates the specific hardware layout used with the generic chipsets used. It actually contains bytecode software.)

That acer handheld would've flopped if they went through with it. The symmetrical lined up button and stick layout would've been So Uncomfortable. Same problem as the Switch Nitrodeck, the right stick is in such an uncomfortable position if the buttons are directly on top of it, instead of slightly further out like most typical console or pc controllers.

I believe Valve is getting ready for ARM because except computers, almost everything runs on ARM and there'll be much more devices with ARM and ARM is getting better everyday with their GPUs. And no, this probably not for phones but more for ARM Linux and Windows devices on the future. Also, this can be a move to redirect the handheld market to move forward with ARM because they are also adding support for other devices like Ally to SteamOS and this might be it because ARM is simply better at power consumption than x86 in many cases so it's actually better for handheld devices to come with it.

On the topic of the Steam Deck. Considering Valve are dependent on the Steam Store to make up for their losses from the Steam Deck, they have put very little effort on it's usability on SteamOS gaming mode. For close to a year, I couldn't even checkout when trying to buy a game because it kept spitting out errors, and issues with navigation still persisted the last time I checked.

Naw i think that Acer exec is reasonable, valve is ultimately selling closer to the traditional console model, so by being a unique presence that doesnt need to worry about major profits on initial sale, they can capture the already fairly niche "handheld pc" market, at a price that can also catch the less niche "cheap pc gamer" but that second more popular one, even theyd likely PREFER to buy a laptop or desktop, its just steam deck is a VERY good value proposition that others just cant quite meet

On android we alrdy have a few apps that lets you run pc games thru wine like winlator and mobox and they can run games like GTA V, Fallout 4 at full speed, so full steam support for arm devices like android is definetly possible. So far the biggest problem with them is they heat up the device quickly because can't take full advantage of the system. Modern high end androids in theory alrdy have more power than a i5 10th gen + gtx 1060 combo.

Rockstar is not dropping Linux (PS5 OS too by the way) they're ditching everyone not named Sony. It's not a coincidence, Sony have been buying developers and publishers off of competitive hardware since Eidos, Tomb Raider 2, and the Saturn and Nintendo 64. It's nothing new, and isn't going to change because they know it works. This may sound like a stretch, but tell me, where is GTA VI going to be basically exclusive for the first year (at least)?

IMO it should also do away with the thumbsticks and maybe also the trackpads for the sake of pocketability. Perhaps that's what the ARM support is for.
