The Acer guy is probably correct. PC handhelds must be priced so aggressively to compete with the Deck, that the resulting profit margins are probably not worth the cost and risks associated with production. Valve makes their money selling games, not hardware. Hardware companies will never compete with them, at least on price. This is precisely why I want a Steam Console so badly. Valve can make a device priced and spec'd similarly to gaming consoles, but with the massive benefit of SteamOS. Gaming mode replaces your living room console, desktop mode replaces your PC. I already do this with a docked Steam Deck and the experience has been very good. It's time for Steam Machine 2.0

The difficulty nowadays itrehe spec requirements for a good handheld while allowing for untethered gameplay not needin to be connect to the powsr outlet for most of your gaming sessions. 4:14 IMO the ROG Ally X is the king of the hill right now. The Steam Deck has a lot going for it. But in game, the ROG Ally X performs slightly better and is compatible with my entire library. I still play my OG Steam Deck quite a bit, but the hardware on the newer Ally X is noticeable snappier. Steam Deck 2 will probably obliterate the competition, but for now they’re close.

Sony are only "remastering" these games for consoles, but their added benefit is that they get to remove the originals on PC just so they can outright enforce PSN across the board on Steam/EGS. They basically want to capture and lockdown the Steam market and pocket it into their ecosystem, none of which we asked for. This is why I hate when publishers come crawling to Steam, because they only care about stealing from Steam's userbase, rather than selling to Steam users and playing nice. Instead it's DRM/account sign-up/Data collection enforcements, coupled with higher prices, and all of that is enough to put me off buying from any publisher that comes to Steam and expects me to put up with all that uneeded crap. Just sell me the game at a decent price, no data collection, no extra hoops to jump through. let me boot up the god damn game so I can play it without obstructions/intrusions.

The handheld market is huge (if you add smartphones); Nintendo should *not* have the gaming hardware space unopposed -- especially post-Switch. PC makers should really get in that handheld market to force Nintendo to step up -- and I'm speaking as a lifelong Nintendo fan who's OK w/their shitty hardware specs.

If Proton (ARM) releases in a competent and feature-full state, that would mean major strides being made in battery life for future ARM iterations of devices like the Steam Deck, which would be huge. Currently getting anywhere from as little as 30 minutes to as much as 8 hours of on-screen-time on the Deck, depending on game/workload, is rough. Switching to ARM, even with the same battery capacity, could see those numbers change to anywhere from 90 minutes at minimum (though that's a generous minimum, assuming other hardware stays mostly the same) to as high up as about 14 hours with lite gaming. The future looks good for handheld gaming, and I'm here for it. I'm not even upset in the least about being a "beta tester" for Deck V1; it's been a wild and exciting ride, and I have loved every second of using my Deck.

I think you're under estimating Valve's relations. They have a footing in hardware, they have for a long time and they have their own manufacturing capacity. I wouldn't be surprised that they do have relations with chip makers.

Stuff is so fluid on Steam deck that even Steam cannot keep up to date. I dl a game that showed as “unsupported” due to being unable to hit native res and 90hz. Plus joysticks didn’t work etc… dl it and sure enough supports 800p/90hz and joysticks work perfectly so it works flawlessly just for some areas need to use track pad on the in-game computers.

It’s one of the few games I’ve every Plantanum and actually wanted more. If they are doing a remaster. I wish they would add content. More missions, fleshed out bases. The game is so good, but at the same time, it felt unfinished. Like you could see the potential off a huge open wold MMO type game, and that would have been chiefs kiss. Instead of making these horrible new IPS, they should have really rebooted this franchise.

That screenshot also shows something that reads as waydroid, which is a way to run android applications in a linux environment. That needs at least a special kernel module. I really like to be able to run android applications on Linux. Maybe that would be a way to view bimx files on the steam deck.
@FanTheDeck4 ай бұрын
Yes, it's a little complicated to explain entirely in a video but the point is they're using multiple different compatibility tools for different purposes and all of them are to beef up Linux compatibility: Waydroid -> Makes it possible to play AndroidARM games on LinuxARM Proton -> Makes it possible to play Win-x86 games on Linux-x86 ProtonARM -> Makes it possible to play WinARM and Win-x86 games on LinuxARM And it gets deeper than that because Proton is a fork of WINE and ProtonARM seems to be leveraging FEX. WINE itself has updates that address WindowsARM to LinuxARM compatibility. We haven't seen any source code for ProtonARM so could it be a fork of like Box86/Box64 or something? And what about making games playable on AndroidARM? Are they going to do that too? Lots of questions still left to answer.
@midorifox4 ай бұрын
Edit: lol, it's for VR, not some sort of steamdeck with ARM. Every tech hipster loves to hype up arm, and then you remember that the moment you need to run compatibility layer for x86 programs all of the so called advantages get down the drain. Makes me laugh how arm predates even x86/x86_64. As well as how memory leaks are doubled on arm devices when you try to make them "the next x86" because some AI Bro told them it's totally gonna work.

That acer handheld would've flopped if they went through with it. The symmetrical lined up button and stick layout would've been So Uncomfortable. Same problem as the Switch Nitrodeck, the right stick is in such an uncomfortable position if the buttons are directly on top of it, instead of slightly further out like most typical console or pc controllers.
@jankrnac35354 ай бұрын
2:56 I think what kicked off low price point was a Switch. There is no point to get out a gaming handheld that will 2-times more expensive than Switch. That is probably why middle class Steam Deck is for 512€ and low memory version is for 416€.
