I had my Yamaha CR-2020 (bought new in 1978) restored with 2 main filter caps, 8 ceramic capacitors, 56+ electrolytic capacitors, 2 fuses and LED light upgrades. Watching you rebuild this Pioneer receiver gives me a better appreciation of why it cost $900 to do that.

Those original relays can be easily refurbished, i like to use a metal polish on the contacts(they usually clean up like new) then clean off any residue with contact cleaner or IPA.

That was a lot of work Aiden! Compounded by filming & narrating it. Can't wait to see and hear it after the FM alignment. I have a Pioneer SX-780 that I really like as well.

I'm surprised that the unit was actually functioning with all those dead caps on the power supply board.

You should always wear gloves, Aiden, when handling harsh chemical compounds, and very old equipment.

Great video of turning an old tired classic Pioneer into a daily driver receiver. Audio grade caps remind me of oxygen free 99.99% pure 10ga copper audio cable at $15/ft with 24k gold plated connectors at each end.

I like your can do attitude, but I must object to your power washing of any electronic components. It's likely to leave moisture in some components that will eventually corrode them. And it's unnecessary. You can remove dust and debris with a vacuum, paint brush and compressed air. When any electronic device is exposed to moisture, the manufacturer will void the warranty and refuse to service it if there is any trace of moisture. That should tell you something about how safe it is. Maybe you got lucky and this works for now, but it's a time bomb. Again, you were brave to attempt this cleanup effort and you did show how to adapt components like the relay and the dual transistor. I appreciate that. But it's really not a good idea to power wash electronics with water.

Could be dry solder or a cracked board where pressing triggered the resurrection of the FM. Might go bad again,

Watching your electronic repair videos is full of cringe moments for me. You are not showing any root-cause analysis and true detective or real diagnostic work. Shotgun approach replacing all transistors and capacitors using guesswork and knee gerk reaction from online posts does not amount to electronics repair nor restoration. Are you a mechanical engineer? hy don’t you stick with what you know and produce car repair videos? Stay with car upgrades, engine conversions, and restorations. And let go of trying to teach the world with very little knowledge of electronics and electronic diagnostic and detective work you have.

He never claimed to be an expert and he has improved a lot since starting the channel. He is learning as he goes and sharing some of what he does know. Those of us with more experience should be providing more constructive feedback. Also, none of us are forced to watch. Give the guy a chance.

Great video Aidan👍👍 Lots of work, tedious and repetitive replacing components especially on boards not removed, no fun. That said, you got er done and with positive results. Did you have parts on hand or preorder just for this unit? Will be looking for the next video of this amazingly working receiver restoration. Thanks for the work, see ya soon.

I don't know about y'all but soldering a board on the side like that is hard. I do it all the time but I don't like it. Solder joints can sag away from the hole too while you're solding new comps in.

I definitely created more work for myself by doing that. Removing the board would have been a smarter thing to do.

I been watching this one carefully, because I bought in worst shape. Yes I did a wash, done it before it was cool. Started with a bad relay, and someones attempt at fixing it. No It wasn't the relay, I tracked it down to at least one Q, but the issue now is intermittent. Is on hold because I'm dealing with bigger headache, a realistic 820 with no real schematic or manual. And so far many burnt components. Great video and channel forget about the haters. 😅

Maybe the meter lead was adding some capacitance to the tuner circuit when you touched the transistor?

Enjoyed this a lot and looking forward to the next one. I hope you're able to resolve the FM tuner issues as the FM tuner was one of the really strong points in the SX-x50 line. Also looking forward to the final cosmetic work. White film usually comes off with vinegar or lemon juice, but I have no idea whether either should be used on this unit's faceplate. Good luck!

Check the fet in the front end of the fm circuit. Silver can with 4 legs. I had this same problem on a sx1050. When you connect your multimeter you are effectively creating a new antenna aft of the first stage. I could get stations with this defective part but they were very weak.
