This is a classic "extended low approach" accident. Got too low too early, then got too slow, then stalled and plunked down on the (evidently very well-designed) gear system. The gear and main cage absorbed enough energy that the occupants walked away; mission accomplished. 🖖

Yeah, considering a good landing. I don’t even know people can fk up bush planes. So forgivable.

Just a note, I think you mixed up Vs during a turn (3:50). Isn't the Vs during a turn = Vs*root of LF at that angle?

@freepilotgroundschool2326 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. I misspoke. The stall speed in a turn is indeed Vs*square root of the LF.

That Twin Otter actually is not actually a precautionary Landing but instead is a Scheduled flight from Glasgow (Scotland) to Barra which is a unique airport in where the runway is the beach! So is only operational at Low tide in which the beach is exposed.

At 40ft to ground level within the pocket of trees, the aircraft may have flown out of a very slight headwind into still air and stalled. I have seen that happen to a Cessna 152 in a spot-landing competition. The surrounding vegetation has since been cleared much wider.

So we put the turn coordinator at max deflection of the instrument when we have no other instruments to indicate the degree of bank? How would I know if I’m 15 or 45 degrees of bank? Why not just do a half standard rate? Then you can actually see if you accidentally bank more.
@Amerikanin2numarali_ustasi
@Amerikanin2numarali_ustasi 6 ай бұрын
speed x 1.5 should be the bank angle... standard turn at 100 kt is 15 degree bank

I don’t like using the word flare! It’s better to use round out or transition to slow flight! Them look down to end of runway for drift and use your peripheral vision for sink rate whilst depleting energy and slowing in slow flight and raising the nose as speed bleeds off!

I slowed down the video to .25,it looks like there may be something missing on the left oleo?Even though they stuffed up the landing it was not so bad as to collapse the gear so easily,the left took most of the strike and yet the right gear collapsed as well,far to easily as well.Heck i was a commercial outback pilot and have seen far worse than that which should have seen a huge launch back in the air.

Ya I thought the same. You’d think a stol airplane would be tougher. I think the drop test for part 23 cert is from 10 ft at gross weight. This didn’t seem to be a higher rate of descent than that. Too bad - those things are $80-$100k now!

I dont see the point of reducing power prior to flare especially when you defo need that ground effect… That landing type is more applicable for short field landing… I would have extended my touchdown point way way longer so that I can touch down at the slowest airspeed.

Just a small correction, in the drag graph. The point of minimum drag is called BEST GLIDE SPEED and not best endurance.

For clarity the gear collapse was caused by a incredibly hard landing thus the gear collapse was not the cause of the crash but a result of it.

Great video. A concept that is not clear, at least to me, is what impact does speed brakes have, explained by conservation of energy. I realize it increases drag, but after that please explain if you can. Thanks again for your videos
@freepilotgroundschool2326
@freepilotgroundschool2326 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. Speed brakes increase parasite drag, which for all intents and purposes, converts kinetic energy to thermal energy (just like how wheel brakes on a car heat up) and therefore energy is still conserved.
@frysimulation
@frysimulation 2 жыл бұрын
@@freepilotgroundschool2326 Since Kinetic Energy is lost, to pay for the drag, what happens to potential energy in this conservation of energy equation
@freepilotgroundschool2326
@freepilotgroundschool2326 2 жыл бұрын
@@frysimulation Potential energy remains constant if the altitude remains constant. The equation is a bit simplified. The equation should properly include thermal energy and nuclear energy as well, but thermal energy (from increasing drag) is somewhat negligible, and nuclear energy is completely negligible! As an aside, it's interesting to note that speed brakes are more ineffective than they may seem at first. In the jet aircraft that I have flown (CRJ & B737), the flaps and gear provide much more drag and thus higher rates of decent than the speed brakes. The speed brakes are only useful if you are far out and anticipate not needing the extra drag some time before landing.
@frysimulation
@frysimulation 2 жыл бұрын
@@freepilotgroundschool2326 I am trying to learn the 737-800 in XPLANE and when they get high on the profile many use speed brakes, which decreases speed, but if your too high you must reduce potential energy so I assume the computer must adjust something to reduce the height Thanks so much for your time.
@freepilotgroundschool2326
@freepilotgroundschool2326 2 жыл бұрын
@@frysimulation On the -800 if you're too high and you're still far from the airport, the best configuration is speed brakes to Flight detent and increase speed to Vmo/Mmo. Close to airport, slow to 250 KIAS (which you should be anyways below 10,000'), flaps 5, gear down, slow to below 200 KIAS and flaps 15. Descend just below 200 KIAS (the Flap 15 VFe). Once on profile, extend landing flaps (30 or 40). If you're still to high/fast at 1000' AAE, either conduct a Go Around or, if the airport isn't busy and it's VFR, do a visual 360 to lose some excess energy.
