@CatMatlock
@CatMatlock 8 күн бұрын
@@AnneL-b9i you will have to go through the SCM unless you just use fingers to release scalenes. If your SCM is tight and aggravated, release some on the pecs first, right below the collarbone especially as that pulls on the collarbone and the SCM. I recommend you start with pecs, do a little squeezing like in the SCM video, then do the scalenes. That’s almost always how I teach it in a full length class. On this channel there’s a playlist of full length classes and there’s an Unbind the Neck and Shoulders class on there. Check that out!

This is a problem I’ve had for years and for the life of me, I was never able to pin point where this pain was radiating from. I came across your video after I looked into the iliacus. I always said that it felt like the pain is behind there but also radiates. I thought maybe hip flexors. But After watching your technique, and performing it, my pain has subsided immensely! Thank you so so much !!! Im grateful for your advice. I do however have this pain behind the iliacus in the BACK which is very difficult to access and get to. Any suggestions?! Thanks !

Hi there Cat! New follower here and I can see these are older videos but I just did the iliacus and psoas after having SI joint, buttock and lower back back for years now and I've gotten so much pain relief from just rolling around on those balls in the areas in this video and even used this hook thing for the muscles inside the hip bowl or iliacus and I do have the fusion w/hardware in the L4L5 and I so wish I'd never had that surgery back in 2008 while in the Army. I just don't understand why the chiropractors don't give us these exercises for pain relief and just crack ya but it's gonna keep going back to the same out of alignment issues if there's muscle imbalances and hot spots. Thank you sincerely for these videos and excuse my terminology and spelling as these are some new names for me. Retired Army sniper/grunt. God bless you Cat!!

can we ride a bike?
@CatMatlock
@CatMatlock 22 күн бұрын
Oh yes. The thing is, that will always affect the iliacus. Get real familiar with this release and where your particular points are. After you ride, release the iliacus. It only takes a minute. I'd also highly recommend you roll out your inner thigh adductors after each ride. You use those muscles to steer the bike and riders often hold extraordinary tension there, which contributes to iliacus issues, but also very much contributes to glute problems. Every time I get off my bike I do a quick release of the inner thighs and hip flexors, especially iliacus. Here's a link to adductor release: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4u5hn2iq96orLMsi=P6FT10qRDjBZgukI. You don't always have to do this long of a practice. Get familiar with YOUR body and release what tends to activate. Best wishes!

@CatMatlock
@CatMatlock 28 күн бұрын
@@lionfishof2533 it should feel less tender after a while. That said, the tight fascia might also be tender! So a good approach is to hold the point for 3-5 long and slow breaths. Relax all your body. Hold and breathe. Then let go and do again tomorrow. The point may not release on the first few tries. You are training your body to let go and it sometimes takes time to do that.

I can't believe I spent three months in physical therapy and none of the therapists were able to relieve the pain and tightness. The orthopedist diagnosed me with a pinched nerve due to osteoarthritis and sent me to physical therapy. My whole neck, upper traps, and my right arm and shoulder were terribly painful. I started physical therapy sessions and right away they began with exercises that I could hardly do because of the stiffness. I could not find relief with stretches and exercises. They even had me do weights! Good Lord. I could feel the knots in the whole area and "the ropes" you beautifully explain. By instinct, I decided to get a deep tissue Thai massage and only until then I started to regain mobility. I kept telling the PTs that those particular "ropes" were very stubborn, they just had me do stretches. I discovered that the muscles, whatever their names, of my whole shoulder and neck area were unbalanced. No amount of pulling or lifting or stretching is going to relieve muscles that are atrophied and in knots. First massage to relax and treat trigger points, then start strengthening. I don't know about the "pinched nerve" diagnosis, but I think by bad habits of posture I did the damage myself to those muscles. So I stopped physical therapy, do my own massages now and I'm working on regaining muscle balance. I've been discovering everything here in KZbin, doctors and therapist will not explain much. Now I know the names of the muscles that were bothering me and why and how to treat them. So an immense thank you!

In otrher video you said it was the higher hip. Which one is ?Thanks great videos
@CatMatlock
@CatMatlock Ай бұрын
@@ricHCarboCarbea I understand how that can sound confusing. Here’s what I hope will clarify… You always want to release these muscles on the low hip side first. The low hip side ones are pulling that hip down and causing some of the pain. However, the high hip side TFL and glute min will be overstretched, and those are the ones that will most likely be causing pain. But the pain BEGINS with these muscles on the lower hip side. So essentially, treat the lower hip side first, then go do the high hip side to get rid of that pain. If you only treat the high hip side, and not the muscles that are pushing it up, you won’t have lasting relief. Does that help? Thanks for asking!

what do you mean, "it just released".. what does that feel like?
@CatMatlock
@CatMatlock Ай бұрын
It feels less painful. Trigger points are chronically held tension and they always have a little bath of inflammation around them, so they hurt when you press on them. When you do this, take a few deep breaths. If it doesn’t feel better, try again later in the day or the next day. You are training your body, “When I press here, you let go.” If not immediate, soon your body will “get it” and let it go, and feel better! If it’s not working, try pressing more gently a few times, just enough so that it feels important. Breathe deeply and relax your body. If you are tense, it won’t be able to release. I hope that’s helpful!

Anything for bilateral sciatica?
@CatMatlock
@CatMatlock 2 ай бұрын
Hmmm... that's very unusual to have it on both sides, which makes me think it's one of two things: 1- either your pelvis is tucked under so much that both sides of the sciatic nerve are being pinched due to excessive tucking. You'd need to release belly, hamstrings, and glute max first before doing anything else. 2- it's not true sciatica but bilateral trigger points in the glute min muscles, which is often related to too much crossing of the legs and tension in the inner thighs. Release adductors of the inner thighs first, then the outer hips, glute min.

So if I habitually stand with weight on my left leg will it cause pain to the left SI joint? I've had left SI joint pain for a couple years. Somewhat under control after strengthening deep core muscles but I still feel it. No fun. Thank you Cat. Very informative.
@CatMatlock
@CatMatlock 2 ай бұрын
Hi Eileen. The short answer is that ... it depends. SI joint pain can come from the quadratus lumborum in the lower back or it can come from the gluteus medius in the butt/pelvis. Typically muscles that are pulled LONG are the ones crying out in pain. So if you're standing off to the left and the pain is on the left, that's probably from glute med. If you're standing to the right and it's on the left, that's probably quadratus lumborum. Hope that helps!
