It’s pretty good. It’s not so warm that you’ll sweat. I’ve used it mid summer I just then use a lightweight sleeping bag which is suited to 10°C or high. Very thin. The main thing is this is comfy and the built in pillow is wide

Thanks Paul. I had a trip in march 2020 where I flew to Geneva and road back to Bournemouth, and the last day was planned to soak up all of Normandy but panic ensued as lockdown kicked I and all ports closed. I got back to the uk luckily. Shame I didn’t have a KZbin channel then otherwise that would’ve been a cracking trip to film. Even got arrested the last day as no cycling was allowed in France 😂🤦🏻♂️. It will be a great trip with the kids, very nice terrain mostly. Few areas with climbs in but not many. I wish I did this earlier in my life. I love editing the footage as it brings back memories. @unclepeteswildadventures2 ай бұрын
Yes I think I agree about the mesh in box end. I’ve just ordered my Elan. I’ve done lots of wild camping but I’m hoping a hoop bivvy will cope with higher winds as it seems this is the future 🙃
@thebikepackingadventurer2 ай бұрын
@@unclepeteswildadventures yes I have a army goretex one, great for just throwing down and in, but this hooped bivvy is cracking too. I don’t feel claustrophobic in anything, and this just feels like you’ve pulled your quilt over your head. I liked it in winter too as it warms up so well being a small airspace. To help with condensation I just made sure the mesh was there and in front of my face a little bit open to help with the moisture in my breath escaping. That’s where the moisture comes from. It meant that night no condensation at all. Obviously not possible if pouring down 😂💦

Can I politely ask that when coming to Dartmoor you follow the byelaws? This is (for now) the only place south of the Scottish border that allows wild-camping and we, the people of Dartmoor and those that regularly visit, would like to keep it that way for the enjoyment of all. By breaking byelaws on the national park you make it difficult to defend the right to camp. By all means have a fire and cook on private land if you wish, but not within the boundaries of the national park. The byelaws are available online as is the camping map, there are woodlands you can hammock camp in without breaking the byelaws, and with the permission of the landowner even one woodland you can have a fire legally. Thank you.
@thebikepackingadventurer4 ай бұрын
Understood and consider my wrist slapped. I’m all about being respectful and wouldn’t have even considered a fire without it being so heavy in rain. I was unaware though about the hammock camping bylaw. So thank you for pointing that out. This was a one off trip to Dartmoor so there is no risk of me breaking any bylaws in the future. I was a person there in the protests against the ban of wild camping last year so I certainly care about the place. 😊
@kevmacmillanadams4 ай бұрын
Which part of Dartmoor is this that allows open fires?
@thebikepackingadventurer4 ай бұрын
I was fernworthy forest, and the only reason I knew it would be fine was due to the torrential downpour for 9 hours. Had trouble keeping it going, so no fire spread risk at all. dug away, covered over in the morning and not a single sign it was ever there
@kevmacmillanadams4 ай бұрын
@thebikepackingadventurer the problem is that open fires aren't allowed under Dartmoor bylaws & if you planned an open fire you'd planned to have one anyway, However careful you are morons watching may not be. You are aware there are permitted camping zones on Dartmoor? People don't usually hammock camp because none of the forests are in the camping zone. Looked like you had a great time though👍
@thebikepackingadventurer4 ай бұрын
@@kevmacmillanadams tbh open fires aren’t really allowed anywhere, or camping in general!! I wouldn’t have had an open fire without the rain there as far too much fire risk in Dartmoor. I always carry dehydrated meals in my bag as back up in case. Would’ve just ended up taking the lamb home for my dog. Such a shame the uk doesn’t allow camping like most other countries, but then I think the respect/common sense in the uk is miles behind most other countries. One day maybe we get there but doubtful in my lifetime
@kevmacmillanadams4 ай бұрын
@thebikepackingadventurer this is true, Dartmoor is the only place in England that allows backpack camping under certain conditions, I'm not sure how aware you are but certain individuals would like to put an end to it. Obviously, as far as I'm concerned all national parks should be open access, the more people out and about enjoying themselves the better it's an amazing thing, the problem is youtube videos blatantly defying Dartmoor byelaws only adds fuel to the fire & we'll eventually lose the only place a lot of family/first time or nervous campers feel safe. Take it steady 👍
@thebikepackingadventurer4 ай бұрын

Thanks for the great video! What's your average speed on roads with this bike and gravel tires? (just to get an idea of how the bike compares to a road bike with 25-28c tires with which you can cruise around 30-35 kph without too much effort). My commute includes both gravel and road sections so I'm looking for a compromise that's not too costly in terms of speed.
@thebikepackingadventurer8 ай бұрын
You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed. With these tyres on that are nobbly, I can sit 18-20mph fine. They roll quite well. The wheels are the greatest and feel heavy, but I will be switching them out shortly. Just deciding to go 650b or 700c. There is a compromise but nothing too much. I now have panaracer gravelking semi slicks and they are considerably faster. I think the normal gravelkings are fast on and off road though, but pants in mud. These stock tyres in this video are like cyclocross tyres so do well in all conditions

Brilliant video - I will buy a Tailfin now. Probably get the alloy version, just to save a few pounds. I have a Tempest too (purchased in 2002), so I assume that it is a thru axis and the Tailfin site suggests a 1.5 mm thru axle (12mm)?

Check on your thruaxle what the pitch of your thread is. I would assume the same as today but check just in case. I have the tailfin universal thruaxle to cover any bike I may use it on. The alloy version is cracking too. Tbh the carbon is a waste of money as it’s the same, and weight saving isn’t worth the extra cost. It will transform how your bike rides with gear on. I suggest buying the seatpost extension mount too as having it further away from the saddle I prefer. Can fit more in your bag then.

I never take cooking kit when I go abroad, it massively lightens the load. I take a tiny fold up rucksack and then in the hour before I set up camp I will pick up food for the evening and for breakfast. My set up is: Restrap Race bar bag containing tent, sleeping mat and pillow all rolled together. Large Restrap Race frame bag containing tent poles and pegs, Fitkicks camp shoes, arm and leg warmers, gloves and merino hat. Restrap Race top tube bag containing snacks. Restrap stem bag containing toiletries and power bank / charger cables. Tailfin Aeropack containing Cumulus Down quilt, Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket, lightweight Patagonia joggers, boxers and long sleeve top (for off bike / sleeping) spare cycling socks and bib shorts. I wear the rest of my cycling kit and keep my phone and wallet, a lightweight waterproof and gilet in my jersey pockets. Spares / repairs are in the third bottle cage. It only states high density nylon on website, but looking in to if I bought these as a trade person directly from China (which I’m sure is the case here) looks like the manufacturer states 40D nylon. I think the weight being a little under a kilo isn’t too bad when considering no need to carry a separate pillow or pump. Although to be honest I would prefer no hand pump as I always have my tiny electric pump with me. Good for emergencies I guess. It is a chunky pad too so I accepted the weight for the comfort it gives me. I think it only works out around 200g heavier than my old pad/separate pillow combo previously, but is hugely more comfy, and no trying to find my pillow in the night now

Moors Valley is a great place for trouble free riding. Get a few dog walkers coming down the trails but rare. All the great spots seem to be shared with dog walkers so we have to be careful. Do you ride mtb or gravel type riding?

Hey, great video. I'm leaning towards the goldrush as coming from mtb. You've ridden both. What do you think of them as in the main differences. Cheers 👍🏻

They are quite similar but all depends what type of riding you intend on doing. If you need a more upright position the Goldrush is better, if you want something that is better on road but that can be more than capable of road then the tempest is better. If you only really want to ride off road and drive to places to ride, then personally a hardtail would be better. Both these bikes are more a go anywhere bike. Hardtails unless lightweight really expensive XC type, are boring riding to places as sluggish. I’ve ridden downhill/enduro and that’s my background but nothing really here in Bournemouth so sold those bikes. The Goldrush can fit slightly wider tyres on and a bit more relaxed. Other than that pretty similar. I wanted something that is faster and more fun road and off road, that can also do bikepacking so the tempest was better for that Hope that helps?

@@thebikepackingadventurer Thanks mate that's bang on. I also got the pioneer 2 and like you love it. I'm only in hastings do may see you in Bournemouth one day 👍🏻

@@dannyknight8082 nice. Yes the pioneer2 is my go to tent for most camps. Had the helm1 for ages and toyed on the idea of the pioneer for over a year, but I wanted that extra bit of room to get all gear inside. I’m planning on doing a coastal multi night bikepack trip to Hythe in Kent. The in laws live in Saltwood near Hythe so will bikecamp from Bournemouth to there and possibly back. Yeah if you’re ever Bournemouth eat message me on Instagram and be cool to go for a camp

Hi mate, whats the rack you use on the back?
@thebikepackingadventurer11 ай бұрын
That is the Tailfin carbon aeropack with pannier mounts. Super solid and can fit to any of my bikes, as it mounts to the thruaxle and seatpost

Thanks John. I do love good views. Next camp I will get there earlier to enjoy the sunset views too. We don’t have big hills here, but the views are great
