High end motorsport and sailing has been doing extensive data collection since the early 80s, but now amateurs in dinghies can get race analysis in a readable form that is state of the art, that was really interesting.

Brilliant, learnt a lot! I'm a novice laser sailor and im using a garmin quatix watch to capture data for post race analysis. At the moment i just overlay the telemetry on gopro video. Ill check out this nord tool though

Hi great video, have you done any videos on best options for tech. What tactic / prism are you using what gps etc, mounting them. What data can be collected and how you can use it. As a yacht racer we use a few programs like adrena and all boats have instruments to see our data. Do you record your track on a mobile or separate hardware and then what programs will use that info… sorry for all the questions

Hi loved the vid and was wondering WHAT GLOVES do u wear? Thx
@MozzySails Жыл бұрын
showa 341 advanced grip, they're a type of builders gloves. Good grip, but wear out after about 5-10 days sailing. But are cheap when bought in bulk. A pack of 15 lasts me a season

hi Tom, brilliant breakdown! thank you. what software did you use for visualising the data?
@MozzySails Жыл бұрын
I used Sail Njord. They do a 'player' software for video syncing and a online analytics package with deeper data tools. www.sailnjord.com/

Very interesting analysis. Out of curiosity why don't you sail the 49er?
@MozzySails Жыл бұрын
I sailed the 49er years ago. Wasn't really good enough or heavy enough and couldn't afford to carry on. The 800 is a lot cheaper and has a good domestic fleet in the UK with regular events. The 49ers in the UK are pretty much a pro only fleet who all race the world cup circuit.

Congratulations mate! Didn't know you were that good. Do you race other classes? Watching the footage brought back some great memories. I have done Australian titles with around 100 boats manoeuvring for the start line. Absolute chaos usually! Never imagined that such technology would come into sailing but then I was racing in the 80,s.

I race RS200s as well, sailed them with my wofe for 10 years or so post uni. The nationals were at my home club last year so I did them, but i don't tend to do open events or championships much in the 200 anymore

@@MozzySails Cheers for the reply and the link. Sailing with your wife would of been fun. I raced 125,s, Laser's, Flying 11,s, 16ft Hobie Cats and 16ft skiffs. Unfortunately my back is completely wrecked these days so had to stop the dinghy sailing.

What are you using for data capture?
@MozzySails Жыл бұрын
Vakaros Atlas 2 on my boat. The other boat was a Garmin Fenix watch.
@KarstenEskelund Жыл бұрын
@@MozzySailswere there any differences in quality from the two data sources?
@MozzySails Жыл бұрын
@@KarstenEskelund we you can't get pitch and heel from the watch. It's also got a lower accuracy so speed jumps about more. This garmin was set to intelligent record, so dropped recording points when in a straight line and relatively consistent speed so was a bit 'patchy'. But you can change that to every second on the watch. The Atlas 2 you can vary the recording frequency. For racing I have it as 2/sec but in training I up this to 10/sec if looking at maneouvers. In summary, I think a watch or mobile is perfect for record race strategy. But if you want to start looking at boat handling then you need something better.

I m not very familiar with sailing competitions, but out of curiosity you won a medal? Do they have like a podium to reward the winners? Is it recorded somewhere?
@MozzySails Жыл бұрын
Yes, there's a podium and results sheet. The championship last 5 days with about 12 races. The team with lowest score wins (minus their worst result) www.sailweb.co.uk/2023/06/02/rs800-europeans-tom-morris-and-guy-fillmore-successfully-defend-title/

This was interesting if a little hard to follow from your editing. I think when you've done equivalent breakdowns for other races you've had a tighter narrative to build the video off of, but here it was tricky following you when there were a bunch of jump cuts as you were seemingly working out how the video was going to go as you were shooting. I'll definitely tune in for all of these as they come out as I forsee them getting better as you have with other kinds of videos you've done. My takeaway from the racing itself is that knowing where your soft spots ahead are going to be, be they from gustiness or whether your timing is gonna put you behind the other boat's wind, is really key to developing your decisions. On that last race do you think they'd have been in with a chance had they taken a clue and tacked right after you to head up the right hand side by the cliffs?
@MozzySails Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Certainly this was more a discussion through moments as I came across them in the data. You're right it doesn't really hand together as race narrative. Maybe it would jave been better to split the video and focus on discrete moments / lessons to create a clearer outcome / learning?
@weatheranddarkness Жыл бұрын
@@MozzySails Maybe? I suppose you could split things up by types of situation, but I think you'd be constantly redescribing the environmental factors. I think some way of setting the stage to say contextualize given sets of races might be a better way to do it?? By weather patterns/conditions, or tactical styles?Then once you've got that done we can follow along as you describe the differences? It's a lot more to cover certainly than a sail gp weekend, or a day of AC racing, so I understand how difficult it must be. Are starts pretty straightforward in your class? You didn't touch on that much.
