For my 1955 Chevy project the original plan was Global West uppers, rebuilt stock lowers and coil overs. I talked to Global West about this and their opinion was the stamped original lower control arm was not designed to take the “point loading” of a coil over mount. It was painful but I ponied up for GW lowers. I really don’t like buying something only to find out it didn’t fit/work and have to tear it out, buy the good stuff and install that. Time and money wasted.

WHY did you SWITCH CAMS to the FLAT TAPPET to make the final point ? Sniff sniff
@CrawdaddyCustomsАй бұрын
Since the peak of the roller cam and peak of the flat tappet are the same, and I was after getting a visual of where the oil band lines up using a factory lifter, I didn’t feel like pulling it back out to shoot the roller lifter on the cam peak. I figured peak lift is peak lift, so I used the cam that was in there.

Have an update on the Elgin lifters.. Got the ones I bought with part number HL-2148S, 4 boxes of 4, all boxes properly branded as Elgin, 2 made in the USA and 2 made in Mexico.. Curiously enough the ones labeled as made in Mexico look identical to the Sealed Power lifter from your video and the ones labeled as made in the USA look identical to the Elgin lifter on your video.. Now I have 8 that work and 8 that don't.. I bought the Sealed Power HT2148 anyway so I should be fine.. but still wanted to share..

Thanks for the update! Always good to know which parts are which.
@rodolfo23cr3 ай бұрын
So looking at minute 12:05 with the Sealed Power on top of the lobe at max lift, I see the flat portion of the lifter where the dogbone retainers go seem to be too high. Shouldn't we see only the flat portion of the lifter sticking out of the lifter bore of the block so that the dog bone retainer system work? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm preparing myself to do this. In that same line, I didn't understand why the AC Delco wouldn't work?
@CrawdaddyCustoms3 ай бұрын
The dogbone riding out out the bore is the issue we have to contend with via the spider retainer. Ideally, it’d stop at the top of the bore. Unfortunately, that’s not the case… Jim (Mr. Peabody) who fathered this whole concept said he has about 25 units running this setup without issues using the modified SBF dogbones. I was trying to come up with a hybrid dogbone that had a relief in the bottom to accommodate the SP lifter… I saw a guy on PY created exactly what I was proposing. I haven’t checked on his progress, so I don’t know if he produced them.
@rodolfo23cr3 ай бұрын
@@CrawdaddyCustomsyeah I have been in touch with Jim, seems like I’ll be the next one running this setup very soon! I asked about this to him briefly after I made this comment, he said the retainers are just guides and are low stress parts so shouldn’t be a big concern. When you say “modified” do you mean just grinding the side that faces the block or is there anything else? I noticed my retainers are flat while the others I’ve seen have some inclination in the lower side, I hope that is ok..
@rodolfo23cr3 ай бұрын
I unfortunately bought the Elgin lifters, which I haven't received yet, before watching this video but I'm pretty I'm going to receive exactly the same you got. I bought mine on ebay too and the pictures show the box, which say Made in USA. In some of the pictures I can see they are identical to these. I have also looked at numerous adds and they all look the same. The part number is HL-2148S and I suppose the S points to a different design that is not HL-2148, which is supposed to be the one identical to the Sealed Power you have. I have not found a single one labeled just as HL-2148 anywhere.. I'm thinking the ones you have may be genuine Elgin but just a slightly different model. I can update once I receive mine. I went ahead and purchased the Sealed Power anyway...

Not too loose. Not too sloppy. Paid $268 for all 4 to my door. Did install new Moog ball joints before installing. Others results may vary.
@CrawdaddyCustoms9 ай бұрын
That’s good to hear. Hopefully you checked the upper arms’ bushing sleeves carefully… because if they’re loose n sloppy like the ones in this video, it’s only a matter of time until they fail. Honestly, I don’t know why they couldn’t get the bushing tolerances/pressings correct- they ripped off @GlobalWest design, so why not copy their tolerances too?
@apachebill9 ай бұрын
@@CrawdaddyCustoms. Maybe not quite that loose but not UMI tight. Keep feeling and listening for that clink, tink, ping, pop creak or movement of any kind. Checked align in Sept. Still right on specs. But! I’ve not dragged, auto-crossed, rat raced, hooned or slid the car yet. Much! 😂. They may well get loose and turn to poo when/if I start hammering on them. I’d put on a beater El Camino all day long. But I wouldn’t recommend them for 700 horse/race/hard driven applications. Get real stuff if’n you’re gonna do real stuff. I’ll likely upgrade one day soon as we are making power now and don’t need bad things happening.

I'm not familiar w/ that kit, but I looked it over briefly- It has the same wire colors going into the convertor as the one I used, so I'm thinking it should work. Perhaps you connected a wire to the wrong Toyota wire? I'd go over the connections again and see. I used the kit that I did because I didn't want to hack into the Toyota wiring- my kit was literally unplug connector, plug in this kit, and reassemble tail lights. Good luck w/ your wiring! Not sure how this came out for you but i started buiding stand alone systems for EFI, Ignition, and transmissions using speeduino board architecture. The simplest version for guys with carburetors that want a coil near plug setup uses a 24 tooth wheel and wasted spark. And it can be set up to use a map sensor, throttle, cam position etc.... just depends on what you're building. To clarify the 24x wheels are universal units set up to attach to an SBC balancer with hall sensor

I considering buying a 1987 Corvette with a Rebuilt 350 TPI. Ran perfect last summer 2022 for 5000 miles. Parked for the winter outside. Wouldn't start in the spring. Mechanic said, "A bad injector put too much fuel in the cylinder, and it locked up." That is secondhand information. I haven't talked to the mechanic yet. I don't know the, won't start, specifics. With a freshly rebuilt engine, does this sound logical? Coolant shouldn't get into a cylinder through a new gasket, I hope! I'll check the fuel pressure and injector ohms and look for milk shakes.
@CrawdaddyCustoms Жыл бұрын
A fresh rebuild “shouldn’t” do this, but it is possible a head gasket failed. I would remove all the spark plugs and try to turn it over. If there’s fuel or coolant, it’ll be pushed out the spark plug hole. To be safe, try turning the engine by hand, then crank it with the starter. If an injector fails ‘open’, it could fill the cylinder w/ fuel, then hydraulically lock the engine when you try to start it- that’s one thing I was worried about on my son’s car. The last things you listed are where I would start. Good luck with it.

Still hoping it’s the starter at 2:18 ??? Two totally different issues and symptoms. If your engine is spinning it’s not the starter, so you would check spark and fuel. If the engine is not spinning, it could be the starter, battery or bad wires/ground. I’m confused by the comment that you hope it’s the starter.
@CrawdaddyCustoms Жыл бұрын
The night before, when you engaged the starter, it banged on the ring gear very loudly, thus giving a possibility that it was the starter. A starter can work, then not, then work again… If you watch all the way through, I went through every scenario and ended up at 6:25 showing a spark plug from #7 that had rusty water on it. That turned out to be the problem. Cylinder 7 had hydraulically locked, which caused the starter to bang into the flexplate teeth.
