David Thewlis is a great actor. He's played a great many characters in great productions. Imho he doesnt really get the reckognition he deserves. His acting in Kingdom of Heaven was top-class!

Perhaps the most interesting character in the movie, well played by David Thewlis.

I watched this movie at least 50 times. Was my favorite movie in High School/College. Wasn’t until my late 20’s I realized the subtle change of demeanor of the Gulf War Marines on the bus when the Vietnam Tunnel Rat Vet stepped on and the significance of this scene. The looks on Jaimie Foxx, Gyllenhaal, and Lucas Black’s faces just radiated guilt for getting a Hero’s Welcome home for getting wasted, having scorpion fights, jerking off, etc. while they all knew the Vietnam Vet went through Hell and back and got nothing for it but disrespect. Great acting, powerful scene, underrated movie.

David Thewlis asthe Knights Hospitaler is great. The extended version hints at him being angelic. Ibelin -"I am outsude Gids. grace." Knights Hospitaler - "I have not heard that."

I love it how this movie portrays Christian to be the bad guys when in reality this whole war on faith was first initiated by the Muhammed and his religion of Islam. Muslims commited more murder and sacriliege in the middle east in a single year of forced "coversion" than Christians did in all of crusades combined.

HE WAS NOT AN ANGEL! He was a supposed representation of a True Crusader Knight! Noble and Holy! All the knights in the movie were depicted as Bad and corrupt knights. Analyze the movie very well

I think the film is better for leaving out the burning bush scene. The Hospitaller standing around in the desert in full armor, then vanishing into thin air, wasn't that subtle - too obvious.

An angel? Give me a break. Remember he gets his HEAD CUT OFF at the Battle of Hattin towards the end of the movie?! I don't think angels, as described, are typically depicted as decapitated

Figurative sense. His spirit is angelic, the flesh is mortal. He carries a message in a body of a mortal.

Not sure about the "angel" notion; if the Hospitaller is meant to be Balian's "guardian angel", then how are others able to see and interact with him, like Godfrey's brother and Tiberias? Angelic interactions in the Bible (at least the ones that a lot of Christians care about) tended to be more personal ones (such was the case with Abraham, Daniel, Jonah, and others), to give instructions or bestow some sort of divine gift or revelation; that is, unless they were meant to proclaim something, like the angel that appeared to the shepherds to announce Christ's birth. Why would God care enough about Balian, a faithless murderer by his own admission, to send him a guardian angel, when he seemingly forsook so many others who had just as much, if not more, faith than he did; e.g. where was the Gravedigger's angel? I guess that poor notch-eared fellow was just SOL, right? Also, since when could angels be killed??? 😆 In any case, I think Balian simply hallucinated the Hospitaller in the "burning bush" scene; that was really his own subconscious weighing his doubts and forlorn love against his sense of honor and duty. I don't know; Ridley Scott likes to throw weird little interpretive morsels into his films (à la the unicorn in the Director's Cut of Blade Runner). It's kind of pretentious, actually.

From 2:55 to 3:10, change a few of the words around and David Thewils, as Prof. Lupin, says the same thing to Harry Potter in one scene.

I'm reading the book right now about Robert graysmith zodiac. And there's a scene in here similar. In the book The zodiac almost got caught. When he shot the cab driver killing him the cops didn't look at him had they looked at him they would have probably found the blood on him. That's very close but they never found him in real life.

I thought the introduction was where the girl and the boy going to the car and the guy stalks them and shoots him. But you can see the scene develop. The introduction in this movie is amazing. They got Robert graysmith the cartoonist. His kids getting up for school and then he's late so he takes him to school. Then he leaves. The mailman get the mail so if you think about it you know zodiac sent a letter cuz he always did and they're just showing all the all the stuff leading up to that.

My theory is that the Hospitaller was like any men in the army, but the Angel used him to communicate these messages to Balian. Satan spoke through a snake, the animal itself did not had the ability to speak, but an angel can; or when Balaam's donkey speaks to him. The angel, then, here, only uses the Hospitaller to guide Balian, and once he's done, the man remains.

Seeing Fowler scared that his buddies were about to get shot was probably the most realistic thing he's shown. The actor did good showing that sort of fear. Like he may be an asshole, but in that moment he was scared for his brothers.
