Masking is what we do to try to appear normal. When I was a kid, if other people were laughing, I'd laugh too in order to blend in. I didn't go around lying. Lying is lying, masking is masking.

I’m in a relationship with a pathological liar…(I gotta make rent ) … at any rate he will just lie to lie . I’ll ask him what he ate for breakfast and he will make random stuff up when I would be there while he’s eating. It’s really challenging. He just lies no intentions just in a constant state of imagining I suppose 😮
@oromtitiwbo50786 сағат бұрын
LMAO I’m sorry that’s terrible. I don’t understand casual lying just to lie 😕I think some people get off on deceiving others. And I think some people are heavily avoidant of conflict so they think lying is easier.

TLDR -- The difference between masking and lying: Lying in order to gaslight people into thinking he spoke up and is blameless is NOT masking. The behaviors he displayed at the time when he was going along with those plans despite his own feelings was masking. He is taking advantage of her trust and limited knowledge about autism (...with another lie. Lol) I really like this couple, but I want it to be clear that the lying well after these situations is not what masking is. It is actually still just lying, like the intention was the same as with anyone who is lying to make themselves look better. --- Him being uncomfortable with people being mad at him for his past actions so he knowingly outright lies IS NOT MASKING. It is lying. Masking involves trying to hide autistic behaviors by doing things to pretend to be like everyone else in that situation (often by mimicking / mirroring their behaviors and mannerisms to feel like you fit in). Masking is learned behavior that helps you not stand out in a group. It is not simply knowingly lying about facts that make you look bad. He was masking when he kept going with her "misunderstanding" that the wedding would be happening. This wasn't an inability (or poor ability) to read social cues causing him to repeatedly lie about the wedding right now, either. He knew very well what she expected and listened to her go on about these huge plans for SO LONG. He just didn't want to upset her and in turn have her be mad at him, so he went along with it until the very last minute when he couldn't keep that up anymore. That was masking, not the lies he was telling "now" to the producer and to Matilda, and almost to her family before she called him out in the car. (Which is why the producer felt comfortable calling him out. Doing so as directly as she did was actually very helpful and in my opinion completely appropriate. He took her feedback pretty well, too! And why Matilda being direct with him in the car was also SO helpful for him!) His masking behaviors would be those that went with the flow of these situations he felt uncomfortable in. Masking is NOT the lies he makes up after those situations to try to convince everyone else that he did actually speak up and say what he was thinking at the time. He probably used to get people mad at him for immediately speaking up, I can relate. I would LOVE to be able to get away with being as direct as I am without consequence, but people see it as confrontational rather than as what it is -direct communication that is often used to clarify or to prevent future misunderstandings. But I don't think I should get away with lying about something, esp big things, that may have even involved who I am talking to just because the truth makes me look bad if I chose not to be direct and went along with what they wanted despite how I felt. I don't get a free pass to lie and gaslight people. No one likes to feel responsible for negative situations that they caused (esp if caused by masking at the time)... That all being said, Matilda has done such an amazing job responding to everything he's thrown at her. She is accepting him and trusting his explanations. Her understanding and trust in their relationship is so refreshing to see! She is guiding him and giving him explicit permission to say things that he has been worrying he cannot say without upsetting her. I think this couple is adorable and really do care about each other. I just wish he didn't take advantage of his autism diagnosis to get away with these really big, easily disproven lies. That isn't masking. But, maybe he will eventually stop lying to make himself look better (even tho it does the opposite bc hes lying to people involved) with enough reassurance that she will always try to understand where he is coming from and give him the benefit of the doubt when something comes across too direct.

@mysurfing35508 сағат бұрын
Niles isn't masking, he is gaslighting a form of narsisstic abuse. Masking is not stimming in public. If Niles was diagnosed with autism it is probably wrong, it's probably just narsisstic personality disorder if he does that regularly. It is extremely uncomfortable to lie like that.

I don’t think he’s a narc, I think he lacks emotional maturity. A lot of men (not all, but a lot) think casually lying to their girlfriend/fiancé/spouse is okay if it prevents her being annoyed or an argument. They don’t understand that lying is worse, when someone finds out about lying they get even more mad about that than the original problem, and discussions are how you resolve issues and move on, it’s okay for people to feel emotions - process them and resolve them together.
