Great build, thanks for the video. I can appreciate leaning on OEM components and engineering, however it's being applied selectively. For example at 8:32, the OEM way is to NEVER to make the heater core accessible for easy change-out. Your design would be "flipped" by OEM to make the core accessible only from the cowl side. 😅 Also core should be the first item in to the subassembly and the LAST item possible to remove, requiring full disassembly.

All my donor car fans are squirrel cage style, I would of had to make the unit bigger and was trying to keep it compact. Maybe I will try one next time for fun!
@thechillhacker10 сағат бұрын
Yes, this is my experience with buying cheap/ebay fans. Just get the Spals. you'll end up doing it anyway after the cheap ones fail, melt, and leave you stranded. Buy once, cry once. That and sealing (i use rtv) is your friend. if you really want thermal efficiency, you must have a good sealed unit. Obviously I'm talking radiators and shrouds, but the same applies, albeit with less dire consequences for failure in the heater core.
@rust_hoarder_garage9 сағат бұрын
Agreed, air leaks just waste air, but at least in this case leaks just go into the cab so no real loss. I am using foam insulation tape, works great for sealing up the box.

I built something similar from fiberglass a while back and used an inline cable operated valve from an old bronco application, the temperature control valve was cheap at car quest, something like 20 bucks iirc.

Nice job! I really enjoy watching you work through problems you come across. I got really lucky on my 56 international and found a 09 mustang heater core fit perfectly in the stock heater box. I did have to modify the tubes on the core a bit, but not a big deal. I also had to replace the blower motor, but had one from a 60 f100 that worked and puts out a good volume of air if I run it at 12v not 6v. Just curious why you didn't put a modern heater core in the heater box that came with the truck. I suspect it might have been a weird size?
@rust_hoarder_garageКүн бұрын
Thanks, in this case I had no heater at all with the truck, it didn't come with one. If you see what I started with it was a 1 ton dually that someone took apart and I only got about 3/4 of what was removed, the rest disappeared over the years. As for original 6v heater motors I run them on 12v but through a modern heater motor resistor network and do not use the high speed function. The lower current on the slower speeds have worked fine with the 6v motors, I will go over it once I have another 6v project vehicle. I just checked out your channel, what is unreal is I have a 1956 IH pickup in storage I bought years ago and I just picked up a Tahoe today to chassis swap it. Looks like you beat me to the gate! I also have a 1960 F100! Looks like we have the same interests, small world.

@@rust_hoarder_garagethat is amazing! I wish you had started your iH frame swap before I did. I could have copied some of your ideas! From what I can tell so far, I think it will work really well on the Tahoe platform. Good to know about the resistive network on the 6v blower motor, I'm sure I'll set mine up the same. I'm really enjoying following your builds. I got a JY performance harness after watching you use them. I'm happy I did. It worked well right out of the box.

Hey RHG, nice job on the heater. Looks like it belongs there, and not too modern! Question, shouldn't it be pulling fresh air from outside in order to get rid of the moisture? I see a blank cover above the vent grille that could be modified to allow fresh air to the fan. Excellent workmanship nevertheless! Paul
@rust_hoarder_garageКүн бұрын
Not sure on that one, I never thought of it! I think this more like having a modern heater on full time recirculation, so the already warm air will just get moved back around the cab. My Ford F1s with the standard heater are similar, no outside air taken in. The cowl vent runs to the kick panel vents, so yes air could be brought in that way if you wanted. Thanks for watching!
@senseimarvin454Күн бұрын
@@rust_hoarder_garage Where i live if you dont have any fresh air coming in and you turn on a heater on recirculate you'll fog the windshield real quick. I had a '95 ford pickup a few years ago that had the outside/inside air door stuck and i had to keep the windows partially open just to be able to see out the windshield when the heater was on. no coolant leaks or anything, just humidity.
@rust_hoarder_garageКүн бұрын
I don't think that will be a problem here in the northeast, by the time you need a heater the air is super dry. It's really just to take the chill off and keep the windshield clear on fall mornings, it will not be driven in the winter.

In almost everything I swap I use a 2000 Camaro Aluminum/plastic radiator, fits and cools nice, won't break the bank either but I do like your shroud idea if running a driven fan. You got some mad fab skills, I usually hit the local Pick & Pull for my parts and bend something up.

One of the best IFS Jaguar video's. How many degrees did you finally tilt the Jag frame lower at the back to get better caster angle ( using the angle finder) ? Thanks
@rust_hoarder_garage9 күн бұрын
Thanks, I will have to double check but I am sure it is 2-3 degrees down. I generally shoot for 3 degrees down on the cradle and set the upper ball joint shims to max caster. Cradle angle sometimes just depends on where it lands on the rails.

I wish I had paid better attention to what year and model, because it all fit under the dash and had a basic rectangle control. May want to tour the junkyard and see if there are any candidates. I have not bought one yet, but I will be doing a 6.0/T56 install in one of the cars so I will get one of those harnesses and go through it. If the harness really is not a T56 harness and is just an automatic trans harness without the trans connector then it will not be worth it. Only worth it if is has all the plugs for the reverse lockout, reverse light plug, etc. that is on the T56, but I will get one and see how it looks.
