I love the parts in these videos where you show how the different parts are played. Especially Sterling's bass parts for Venus in Furs, which I had not realised were as subtly complex as they are until I saw you play it. I'm always just listening to the viola in that song.

All the problems the band had around the release of the record are classic Stasi type stuff. In the US it is called MKUltra. This is a line of inquiry I’ve been investigating around My Bloody Valentine (decouples of The VU if ever there was one) and the recording and release of Loveless. The common refrain is drug addiction is at the heart of these kinds of issues but keep in mind MKUltra spent a lot of money investigating addiction and weaponized it. I think the common thread is both bands explore using sound to alter peoples brainwaves (intentionally by MBV and maybe unintentionally (never stated) by VU) and sexuality. Those are the primary way the programs mess with their victims. Plus they both have cool initials VU and MBV! (That part is a joke, the rest I’m dead serious about :) this three part film is so awesome too. A real artistic achievement. Thanks 🌊🌊🏄♀️🏄♂️

Another highly enjoyable installment. Thanks so much for doing these. I was just happy the Mo Tucker doc you did existed at all and now we have this! All of this stuff is way better than just about any professional music doc I’ve seen. The passion is immense, yet somehow understated. Kind of a perfect homage to the Velvets.

Everyone thinks Lou was the contrarian. He wasn't the only critical force in the band. I like the Reed interview by Elvis Costello when he reminisces about showing Sterling the "secret" chord in the Sweet Jane riff and Sterling is like "so what?" lmao......Micky Baker! Makes so much sense.

I was thrown when I read he didn't like to play bass because he had such a great feel and he really had the beat down and could throw in those sweet walks. His guitar playing has always struck me as very influenced by 50's R&B (I can hear licks from the New Orleans stuff, James Brown etc.)....and sliding around the double stops ala Steve Cropper. If I made a list of top ten underrated guitarists in rock n roll sterling would be in the top 5. Man I love your work on this stuff!

Truly impressive. In every aspect. The Cale organ sonics are especially fascinating in your ability to replicate. Once they moved past the Vox sponsorship (and John's exit too, of course) they were a different band. Still great certainly, but I would say that here they reached what was peak Velvets.

Cam - thank you again - for producing an important historic - living - documentary on Sterling's role in VU - a fitting tribute - many many thanks - I'm so glad you've kept this project going - & I may have found my AD412 ;-) the search for which brought me to discover your important recording of this history and bringing it back to life again ...
@CAMFORRESTER24 күн бұрын
Thanks so much, Tim! Nice to hear from you again...glad to hear you've found an AD412. I think I mentioned to you previously that the only place I could find one was in Bulgaria...well, last month I bought it, and had it shipped over! So now I have two awesome looking Vox stacks for the VU tribute band project - which is progressing well indeed, you'll be glad to hear - but a couple of weeks ago, the left channel on one of the AD120VTH heads stopped working - the one I've had over four years! I've had it apart and am trying to fix it, but I've replaced several components and still, no dice. I've considered trying to build my own custom AC100/2's from scratch if I can't fix it, only I can't seem to find any clear information on the RMS power rating when paired with a 4/16ohm cab like the AD412 (I think the original AC100 cabs were 8ohm - the amps had 8/16 outputs, but I think with the latter the output is halved unless I'm mistaken)...otherwise I might opt for another (more reliable!) solid-state option, such as the Marshall Lead Mosfet 3210 (which is 100W at 4ohm - perfect for the AD412). I'd be interested to hear your thoughts! Here's the forum thread with repair progress: music-electronics-forum.com/forum/amplification/guitar-amps/maintenance-troubleshooting-repair/1006999-vox-ad120vth-amplifier-head-issue-left-channel-silent-dead-no-sound

You probably won't see nor answer this question, but I'll mention it anyway. I wondered what you thought about the bass drum being tuned to a C#? I've always thought this was an intentional decision on the part of the VU for the recording of Venus in Furs. I mean, after all, what are the odds of it being that without some judicious re-tensioning.
@CAMFORRESTER24 күн бұрын
The drum is actually tuned to sing D#/Eb (pay particular attention in the chorus - it's perfectly in tune with the bass note of the first chord), but it has overtones that make it sound like it sings a C# at times (possibly related to an interval relationship between the batter/resonant heads if both sides aren't tuned the same, or just the acoustics of the shell itself, and type of drum head used). I just checked with headphones, and it is tuned the same way in the earlier take (although the entire recording is a semitone lower - in the key of C - so the drum is tuned to D), so you are right in that it's not a coincidence (probably a judgement on Cale's part). I deliberately tuned my bass drum to sing D# in my cover version, but it has a strong overtone of B (which results in an Augmented 5th interval) which means that either my tuning/interval method was not quite the same, or my shell and/or choice of drum heads do not interact the same way as Moe's did...interesting! 😉
@Unfunny_Username_38924 күн бұрын
@@CAMFORRESTER Thanks for the reply - much appreciated. I agree it's probably the hand of Cale ; - ). I love your last point about drum dimensions as well. On the rare occasion that I've messed around with "tuning" a drum to a definite, explicit pitch, I did find that they're far more willing to accept some "notes" more than another. Not surprising, but definitely something to bear in mind early on in proceedings - cos it could end up being easier to change the key of the song rather than to force a drum to resonate at a more or less specific frequency!
@CAMFORRESTER24 күн бұрын

Great video, thank you! I have a Continental II purchased well-used from Frank Hessy of Liverpool in the mid 60's. It has plastic keys and the rear X braces which you say was on the Italian model. However the plate affixed says "Manufactured by Jennings Musical Industries, Dartford, Kent". Model is "TC/2M" and serial number is "0505". Over the years I have changed many transistors and capacitors to keep it going! Still in love with the sound!

Glad you enjoyed this - thanks for your comment! And I do recall reading that a lot of the Italian organs were incorrectly given serial plates that suggest they were built in England. I think the reason was something like using up old stock of plates before creating new ones, but I'm not certain!
