I ended getting an advanced diploma in graphic design and basically had no luck in finding work related to it. I currently work part time for a municipality and they occasionally post graphic design jobs, yet every time I apply I get no responses. :( I’m going to keep trying, but it’s just very disheartening. I do like illustration way more though and now I’m working on a portfolio for it. Tip 2, 3 and 5 are great! Thank you so much for the video, it was really helpful! ❤😊
@ArtBusinesswithNess23 сағат бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that! We have this perception that graphic design is an "easier" art job to get, but that's not often the case. There are a bit more in-house positions for graphic design, but it's also very high competition. You can also do freelance graphic design but then you have to do all the marketing, specialization and business running than you would have to do with any other freelance work, like illustration. Any art career will be challenging and competitive, but when the going gets rough, artists who are aiming for their real passion are more likely to persevere!

Kristina Hulkrantz had shared her experience with nerida as an agent, and she said that she and 5 of her Swedish designers were approached by nerida to be represented and she asked them to pay for their Surtex booth but during the event, she didn't represent them at all, and she has done nothing to them, didn't bring any licensing deals or anything and kristina was actually warning people from the patternfield and asked artists to wait and see how it unfolds, we all now know, it's just a s scam. From what I have noticed, nerida always plays the victim and never takes any accountability for her actions, sad!

It seems this company has supply chain issues. In this type of business models, the client payments are used for running the company. If the fixed costs for running the company are too high or suppliers'payment terms ill negociated, there s no cash generation to cover working capital requirements. If there s no cash reserve, the treasury issue will be difficult to tackle. Statistically, when there are treasury issues, a company can run into bankruptcy within a year. I am not saying this can be the case here, but there are certainly points of attention. Is there a public rating available in Australia for companies? Or any obligation to publish financial statements? A quick check could bring comfort to clients.
@meacelestin2 күн бұрын
I'm not a client but I've been following this on the Reddit group Craftsnark. Apparently, she has licensing with third parties which explains why her patterns are currently on sale in various chain fabric stores internationally. EDIT I searched online and she is on sale in the UK, Canada, and France, at least. It seems it's the individual clients that she is ripping off. I'm in the camp of people who think this is not simple incompetence, this is scamming. The pattern seems to be there between her various ventures. If she was just overwhelmed, why would she immediately move on to opening a NEW business, not once but twice (that we know of)???
@ArtBusinesswithNessКүн бұрын
After posting the video, someone sent me the last bankruptcy report from 2022. It confirms she was running insolvent from even before the Patternfield early bird launched, and in fact the company was never profitable and lost on average $400k every year since creation despite over 2 million in sales... Lots of fabric suppliers were owed large sums too and likely never got paid, which could explain why she's having trouble finding new suppliers and putting in orders. No one wants to work with her.

Thankyou for your video. It’s good to hear some facts about Patternfield. I’m a home sewist who is owed about $250 of fabric. It won’t break the bank but my trust in NH fabrics has certainly been destroyed. Even through the pandemic I was able to visit the NH store in Ocean Grove and pick up my orders. I loved having good quality and creative fabrics available at my doorstep. It’s difficult to believe how a successful business has come to this. My longest order from 5th Jan and promised by the end of Jan 2024 has been part fulfilled but still some outstanding. No subsequent order has been fulfilled, despite numerous promises.

Yesterday I sent out a reminder to people to keep requesting their refunds and this is what one disgruntled customer had encountered that afternoon; I just called the number and Nerida answered. She said she couldn’t give me any information about refunds as it’s in ‘someone else’s’ hands. She refused to tell me who that ‘someone’ was and then went on to assure me the refund would come asap. When I asked when to expect the refund she replied ‘I can’t say as it’s in someone else’s hands and they’ll be in contact . When I told her that customers were angry and upset about no fabric/refunds and how could she open a new business when she owes so much money Nerida replied ‘there is a lot of misinformation online’ thanks for making this video and for spreading the word about this fraudulent business operator!!! Keep fighting the good fight Maree

I went to one of her sewing workshops and on meeting her in person she reminded me of the others I’ve met through my creative career so after that day I didn’t trust her. I didn’t act on anything but something told me not to bother ordering from her. I think creatives need to start speaking out much more instead of living in fear because too often we are being ripped off. I don’t know about other countries but here in Australia creative people have very little protection or recourse.

@ I’m 56 so I’ve had many years of being burned so my instinct is learned. I tried to start an organisation to protect designers 30 years ago but everyone was so desperate for work and so scared they wouldn’t join me. I still think we need organisations to protect artists. I would advise any young artists to spend money on a lawyer and get a contract drawn up to place in front of employers or companies they work with. If they won’t sign, don’t work with them!
@ArtBusinesswithNess2 күн бұрын
@@georgianasstudio Oh definitely, no contract no artwork! Although, I tried to hire a lawyer to review my draft contract years ago and I had a terrible experience... I described what I needed to review, her agreed and took $450 as payment, then told me a contract not written by a lawyer is garbage. He had no further constructive criticism or any specific tweaks to suggest. Just that I could hire him for $2000 to draft a real contract. Really lovely!
@georgianasstudio2 күн бұрын
@ it’s really a minefield for creative people and finding the right help can definitely be tricky. We have Australian Arts Law which is a good resource but many creative people are not highly paid so finding the money to pay for quality legal advice is still a problem. Most of the graphic design organisations I know of in Australia are headed by people (mostly men) who own design companies and therefore do not have a vested interest in protecting the rights of employees and freelancers or contractors. Nothing will change until creative people join forces and set up a structure with government endorsement to assist with payment and working conditions. I worked so many nights and weekends without any remuneration above my standard salary under threat of losing my job if I didn’t agree to it. I have no doubt others have experienced the same. Many businesses would not exist or flourish without the talents of creative people so at some point, creative people should be protected like any other profession,

However, I wonder if fixing colors in Photoshop is enough, since monitor calibration could also be a factor, and when I send the file to print, I still could not get the colors like in my analog painting? lol I also thought it's very cool and smart to use the dodge tool for the background texture, I never thought of that!! And I loved the channels tip to select line artwork in a way that we don't get any whitish outline because of the transparency, REALLY cool!! Thank you!!

Unfortunately there is always going to be a small difference between the original, the computer screen and the printed version. It’s inevitable! It helps me to remember that I’m the only one that knows the difference 😅 I calibrated my screen so that when I print, it won’t look darker than my screen. Then I try to match the scan on my screen as close as possible to the original, but give myself grace that even if it’s not a 100% match, as long as it looks good then it’s ok 🥲

@ArtBusinesswithNess23 күн бұрын
They could accept photographs if they are very professional quality, which is difficult to get! It's not just about the camera, but it's mostly the lighting. You need lots and lots of light to get good quality, but you also need that light to be diffuse (not glaring) and extremely even. That is tricky! Many photographed artworks are easy to spot because of uneven lighting (some spots in the image are darker than others). More than an expensive camera, what you'd need to invest in is professional photography lights (which can also be very expensive). Honestly, I think it is likely less expensive to get a scanner, and easier to operate as well.

It depends on the complexity of the project and style, and how quick the artist is! 12 double-page spreads usually take me 3-4 months. This book was very simple and only single pages. No backgrounds and not even a lot of details, but the deadline was still like.. 5 months from what I recall. A generous deadline and this allowed me to take my time with ideation, create multiple thumbnails for each page, and do a lot of back and forth with the publisher. Sometimes with board books, the deadlines aren't as generous. The shortest I was offered (by a real publisher, not an author) is 1 month.
