Have you ever hurt yourself while drawing? 😨 If so, share what happened!

I developed carpel tunnel because back when I was a teenager (30 now) I was doing traditional art every single day for hours. I didn't take breaks and then I learned about doing art on the computer. I didn't know back then that there were drawing tablets and I used a mouse to do all my linework. Later, I got a job as a cashier and that's repetitive movements as well. Being a cashier is what got me to the point where I had to get surgery on my dominant hand (A very expensive surgery that did nothing because my job brought carpal tunnel back again). I have bilateral hand numbness and carpal tunnel in both hands/wrists. After surgery I could no longer do traditional art or hand write for long because after 10 minutes my dominant hand would go completely numb and tingly. I can now only do digital art. Now My non dominant hand will randomly got completely numb and tingly on me (due to my carpal tunnel/hand numbness in both hands) So I believe I may have developed some nerve damage somehow. Dont be like me kids and take breaks. lol

I'm so sorry to read that, hun :( When we're young, we don't know better. We don't feel the need to take breaks until something breaks. But most of us are lucky to get something milder first that can be fixed and acts like a warning signal. You so didn't deserve this... The fact you're still creating art after all this is incredible. You're a true artist through and through!

Good tips. I already do some of these stretches myself. The wrist stretches i should do. But yes, the 20/20/20 thng is great. I also stand up when I do it thing too.

That's great, Jimmy! So many artists don't start doing these things until we hurt ourselves... Better safe than sorry!

I developed really bad tendinitis in both hands last year 😅 it was terrible and lasted for months. I ended up investing in a large display tablet to use instead of my surface book and that has helped a lot. But now I'm terrified of more permanent injuries.

That's horrible, Kathleen! I'm glad you feel better, and definitely understand the fear. I live with it also. But as long as we are careful and do all the prevention work to take care of ourselves, we drastically reduce the risk of injury :)
