Hi! How do you feel about the Comica VM40 in terms of audio quality? Is it good enough that you would be confident it would get the job done if you forgot your mke 600 at home? I've got a mke600 but there is something wrong with it (strange pops) and the VM40 is very appealing in terms of features.

Hey Brandon! @blasepivovar10 күн бұрын
Glad to help! So photometry and AF settings are actually different things! I like to use center weighted photometry as that is what is pulling your exposure values like -0.3 or +.6. It is usually displayed on the screen to give you a rough idea of exposure although not always the best to trust. As far as autofocus, MF always for talking head interviews. If I am filming myself for youtube I'll use AF + face tracking (eye auto). Hope that helps!

Mine arrived yesterday (after 11 months the waiting list and still 600 cameras down on that list, I bought a used one X100VI). I've worked through a couple of set-up vids, and your's is great. One suggestion I have is locking in a base C Standard set of settings before trying to enter custom recipes. That way you can always revert. Of course, this is my first FF, and frankly, I find all the settings and modes intimidating after the Canon DSLR experience. So I might not fully comprehend the effects of what I just suggested. Some concepts are till fuzzy. Like are there a set of base features and settings that apply to all modes (no mode, C1, D2, and simulations)? If I just turn the camera on in manual and start shooting, what mode is that (since there is a standard mode in simulations) Also, if I set Flash Manual anywhere, I can't find any control to adjust the Flash strength without going into the menu. Am I missing something basic? I wouldn't mind a "take it out of the box and start shooting" video. Then, I could start building into the really complex menu settings and nomenclature. Another suggestion is always resetting the Camera to Factory Setting and then updating the Firmware before setting anything else up. This is particularly true if you bought used, but you never know if a QC person at FF or a clerk in a store switched some setting that will bedevil you until you eventually find it.
@blasepivovar13 күн бұрын
Thanks Rick. Some features apply to all modes. Others not. Hard to explain in the comments. As far as shooting in manual, the mode depends on your drive setting and your simulation based on whatever you set it as. Not sure on your flash question. Good call about factory resetting after buying used. Great idea!

Thanks for the detailed breakdown of everything, its really helpful! But I would like to ask, if the VM40 receiver is plugged into Camera(operated by DP), and im the Boom guy who holding the VM40, may I ask how do I monitoring audio in real time with headphone? Do I have to use a long cable headphone and monitoring from the receiver? Or is there any easier way to do it? Because Im standing a quite far distance from the DP, and DP couldn't multitasking to monitoring the audio and record video at the same time. So I tried the Comica APP and monitor it with mobile phone, but I couldn't listen any sound from the mobile phone(even there is a "phone spearker monitoring" option), any advise?
@blasepivovar15 күн бұрын
Great question and perhaps the common downside of these budget products - they solve one issue but then create others. You can monitor via the 1/8" output on the mic itself but in my testing seemed much too quiet to be able to hear it properly as there is no independent control of the level coming from that port. I think it's more designed to be used by someone operating a camera and monitoring audio at the same time but with the added benefit of internal recording in the event of interfering / clipping. That is great feedback and think their next model would be wise to include a dedicated headphone out with level control on the mic itself or the ability to send it to two receivers at once

@blasepivovar thank u so much for the feedback, its really bothering me with this issue, but good to know the downside of this, guess i will find some other ways to work around with this. VM40 already considered very good based on this price! And thanks again, I really did learn alot from u 👊
